Manny a Mariner?

I know this off-season has been underwhelming so far, but what if, theoretically, the Mariners could sign Manny Ramirez? At this point it might be more of a "put butts in the seats" kind of move, but it couldn't hurt... right?

How much would you spend to get him here?

What would that mean for Milton Bradley and Michael Saunders?

Oh, I'm sure Manny would find some way to make his time as a Mariner hurt.
I think that would be fun and all, but Milton would be pissed
Screw Milton

That guy is never going to get over his personal issues to do any lasting good on the field. I say release him or trade him for some A level prospect and bite the bullet on his salary.

It's good to know that Milton's personal therapist posts on LL!

You obviously know a lot about the inner workings of Milton Bradley’s psyche, which is nice to read. Please do enlighten us more!

Look at the facts

Milton has had issues with other players, umpires, fans, and personal stuff we don’t know about his entire career, save his All-Star year with Texas in 2008. Maybe he could somehow have a repeat of 2008 in 2011, but… I doubt it.

You are absolutely the first person to bring up these points and I think I can speak for all of Lookout Landing when I say you have completely changed the way we look at Milton Bradley.
I'm not trying to change the way you look at Milton

The only reason I brought up Milton is because I was commenting on jackyz saying “Milton would be pissed.” I really don’t care if he was pissed that the Mariners got Manny because it’s not like Milton would do better than him anyway.

Perhaps the Dodgers may be interested.
They do need a LF...

…but they won’t bite. The only way they would have any interest in Milton is if the Mariners covered at least 90% of his salary (the Dodgers have their own money issues). That being said, they have also seen first hand what trouble the guy can be, making it even less likely they’d trade for him.

Personally, I care for Milton, and I know there is a little ball of love deep down inside that beautiful body
If he DH's and comes cheap and wants to play for a non-contender, sure.

Seems like a long shot, though.

The last thing this team needs is a "put butts in seats move".

That didn’t work out so well with 2010 Griffey, and it wouldn’t work well with Manny Ramirez.

By which I mean not that the M's don't have attendance issues

but that the way to solve those issues is to put an entire quality team on the field, not to sign some guy because he’s “eccentric” or whatever.

Or maybe Ramirez' ability to put butts in the seats is more related to his ability to hit rather than being eccentric.
The difference is that Manny Ramirez can still hit
Safeco would be a last ditch destination though
We need a DH that can hit better than .230 and have an OBP better than .380

If Manny is our only affordable option then I say go for it. Our DH has been anemic at best for years, maybe it’s what we need?

An OBP of .380 is acceptable
That's why I said better than.
I don't think Manny will be affordable
I hate Manny

I just can’t stand watching him play. His slovenly appearance and lazy play just piss me off. And how many players do you know that you can actually, confidently say about them that they quit on their team? Let some other team deal with him.

The Dodgers liked him

I am a Mariner fan and a Dodger fan (I live near L.A.), and I must say both the fans and players loved Manny in Los Angeles… at first. In 2008 after the trade and during 2009 (despite his drug suspension), he was loved, and it seemed like he was loving being a Dodger. However, in 2010 his old tendencies sprang up again and it seemed like he was getting antsy to leave. From what I’ve heard the White Sox loved him in his brief tenure there last year also.

All that to say, if signed to a short term deal (which he probably will get wherever he goes anyway) I don’t think his “eccentricities” will really affect his play.

Ah, the old "quit on his team" meme.

Funny that.

Also the Nationals just spent a bazillion dollars on slovenly appearance and lazy play.
"[Our best player] hurts this team by..."
Quit on his team or was racially profiled?

Oooh, I know the answer.

OPSing 900 while quitting on his team!

Whadda bum

I quit on my reply button apparently.
If we can't afford Manny, how about Vlad?

No more freaking betting on “never has been”s and “never will be”s like Casey Kotchman.

He's basically the same as Matsui except righthanded

All things equal, go with the lefty bat in Safeco.

After last season, I would expect Vlad to cost a bit more, too

which isn’t insignificant, given that we’re unlikely to be competitive next season
