Miguel Olivo is the only catcher in Major League Baseball with more passed balls than Rob Johnson last year.
In fairness, he did play a lot more games, but he still lead MLB in PB. If you combine the plate discipline of Jose Lopez with Rob Johnson’s ability to catch the ball, you could have that to look forward to next year in Miguel Olivo. I’d rather spend the money on food.
I still think they should sign Jeff Francis, especially after the silly small offer the Rockies gave him (a minor league contract for a 2 WAR pitcher in 20 GS)?
Neither Bedard nor Pineda can pitch 200 innings next year.
Which is lame. I remember back when he was going to sign with the Angels, he actually wanted to sign here (his mom really liked Seattle, and he’s a mama’s boy) but we made no effort because we were too scared to ask Ichiro to move. Which we later did anyway.
- small sample size in Safeco
- our park kills right handed batters
- Vlad is aging and could collapse
- Vlad has battled injuries in the past and offers zero defensive value
- Vlad is likely to be expensive or seek a multi-year deal due to his good season in Texas
I just don’t see any reason for us to be interested in him over Matsui or Cust
The only concern I would have is L/R balance at the top of the lineup, since you're likely looking at
Ichiro, Ackley, Smoak and DH near the top by the end of 2011, but that’s still not even close to worth the additional investment in money and years to Vlad
I would like him if he did well, but my hate would grow if he performed poorly. And something tells me the Arlington—→Safeco transition wouldn’t go too well.
So the Rangers had two highly touted 1B prospects and will likely have traded them both
According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Rangers are working on a deal that would send Chris Davis and Darren O’Day to the Cubs.
Davis has struggled to get comfortable at the big league level, but he could be a solution for the Cubs at first base. It’s not clear who the Rangers would get in return as part of the proposed deal, but it’s possible that they could have interest in either Welington Castillo or Robinson Chirinos, two young catchers who are currently blocked at the big league level by Geovany Soto.
If Seattle was seriously in on Adrian Gonzalez so that we could flip him at the All Star break, then theoretically we will be going hard after Greinke as well right?
Your screenname is going to blow my dyslexic fucking mind.

That said, I’m not sure I see much of a match trade-wise between the Royals and the Mariners, but then again, I don’t “trust the process” either so what do I know.
Salk says:
Miguel Olivo linked to Mariners more than Zaun is.

Uh,
Decatur - December 7, 2010
I would much rather listen to "Limelight" nonstop than deal with that again.
Kouvre - December 7, 2010
AWESOME!!!
seanchristopher - December 7, 2010
The MST reference
not Miguel Olivo

I still think they should sign Jeff Francis, especially after the silly small offer the Rockies gave him (a minor league contract for a 2 WAR pitcher in 20 GS)?
Neither Bedard nor Pineda can pitch 200 innings next year.

Nationals are apparently poised to offer a big contract to Cliff Lee.
This is still about the 2nd best team he could sign with in terms of my happiness.
Kenneth Arthur - December 7, 2010
Haha Rangers
Robert - December 7, 2010
Reports (Heyman's source) refuted that pretty quickly. I doubt the Nationals get in on this as other's (Olney) may indicate.
kentroyals5 - December 7, 2010
Awww.
Killjoy.
katal - December 7, 2010
I tend to trust Olney, so I got excited, too. I was actually ready to jump on the Nationals bandwagon....I guess there's still a chance.
kentroyals5 - December 7, 2010
I hope so. They've got the money and they've shown the willingness.
Jayson Werth doesn’t make them go from 69 wins to 79 wins. But both of those guys together might. Come on Nats!
Kenneth Arthur - December 7, 2010
Then we will be the only friend left.

Poochie - December 7, 2010
The A's considering Vlad...
Every AL West team but us. We know he excells in our park.
ambrosia2112 - December 7, 2010
Yeah, but his back is so bad he runs like he gotta dump in his pyants.
Hey, hey Vlad! You got shit in yo pants! Stupid…
Decatur - December 7, 2010
We know he's getting older too.
ThundaPC - December 7, 2010
Everyone thought he was done before last year.
Then he goes and wins the 2010 DH award. I don’t care if he can’t run, if he can drive in runs batting #3 or #4 that’s what counts.
ambrosia2112 - December 7, 2010
It's not like Texas is a hitter's ballpark or anything.
ThundaPC - December 7, 2010
C'mon now. I'd bet that 90% of the HR's Vlad hit out would make it out of ANY stadium.
I think if he’s open to playing in Seattle Jack should make a play for him.
grips - December 7, 2010
I'm curious whether that's 90% of 15 or 29?
ThundaPC - December 7, 2010
Check it out
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5737/splits Only 3 more home runs hit at home rather than away.
grips - December 7, 2010
14/29 last year would have been out in any stadium.
Interestingly, 1 of his homeruns would have been a homerun in 0 stadiums.

joof - December 8, 2010
Was it accidentally ruled a home run or something?
thehemogoblin - December 8, 2010
OK, and instead of an expensive two-year commitment to a right handed batter
why not give a cheap one year commitment to a younger player who fits the park better and has no history of injuries?
seattlebruin - December 7, 2010
There are other cheaper, younger, healthier options that can do what Vlad can do.
JLProck - December 7, 2010
I am happy that Lookout Landing has come as far as it has, and will now keep my mouth shut.
BrettJMiller - December 7, 2010
Old and brokenish.
Which is lame. I remember back when he was going to sign with the Angels, he actually wanted to sign here (his mom really liked Seattle, and he’s a mama’s boy) but we made no effort because we were too scared to ask Ichiro to move. Which we later did anyway.
JY - December 7, 2010
And 2004 would have been much different.
chaney - December 7, 2010
Well...
- small sample size in Safeco
- our park kills right handed batters
- Vlad is aging and could collapse
- Vlad has battled injuries in the past and offers zero defensive value
- Vlad is likely to be expensive or seek a multi-year deal due to his good season in Texas

Ooohhh forgot about that one!
seattlebruin - December 7, 2010
I'm pretty sure that's wrong though I'd have a hell of a time tracking down archived news on it.
JY - December 7, 2010
I don't think Vlad has ever expressed interest in playing here
I think we’d remember that
seattlebruin - December 7, 2010
I think you're right.
I don’t have the time to track anything down, but I remember he wanted to play in Seattle.
KC Mariner - December 7, 2010
It's not that I don't believe you, but I'd love to see the evidence of this
seattlebruin - December 7, 2010
(sorry if that came off assholish, I legitimately do not remember him ever expressing interest in playing for the Mariners)
seattlebruin - December 7, 2010
It didn't come off as assholish, no worries.
I wish I could easily post a link, it’s just something I seem to remember pretty clearly.
KC Mariner - December 7, 2010
I remember it too, and I hardly paid attention in 04
BrettJMiller - December 7, 2010
I also remember his agent saying they were surprised we did not even talk to him.
Sec 108 - December 7, 2010

Scruffy Lefty - December 7, 2010
Not really!

Aaron Campeau - December 7, 2010

Ryan Divish - December 7, 2010
