12/7: Open Winter Meetings Day 2 Thread

Today's rumor is that the Mariners are focused on improving their starting lineup. Hard-hitting stuff.

Salk says:

Miguel Olivo linked to Mariners more than Zaun is.
Uh,

I would much rather listen to "Limelight" nonstop than deal with that again.
AWESOME!!!
The MST reference

not Miguel Olivo

Miguel Olivo is the only catcher in Major League Baseball with more passed balls than Rob Johnson last year.

In fairness, he did play a lot more games, but he still lead MLB in PB. If you combine the plate discipline of Jose Lopez with Rob Johnson’s ability to catch the ball, you could have that to look forward to next year in Miguel Olivo. I’d rather spend the money on food.

He has more power than both though.

I’d still rather have Zaun.

Note from Drayer

on Olivo

That...that is something
I still think they should sign Jeff Francis, especially after the silly small offer the Rockies gave him (a minor league contract for a 2 WAR pitcher in 20 GS)?

Neither Bedard nor Pineda can pitch 200 innings next year.

Nationals are apparently poised to offer a big contract to Cliff Lee.

This is still about the 2nd best team he could sign with in terms of my happiness.

Reports (Heyman's source) refuted that pretty quickly. I doubt the Nationals get in on this as other's (Olney) may indicate.
Awww.

Killjoy.

I tend to trust Olney, so I got excited, too. I was actually ready to jump on the Nationals bandwagon....I guess there's still a chance.
I hope so. They've got the money and they've shown the willingness.

Jayson Werth doesn’t make them go from 69 wins to 79 wins. But both of those guys together might. Come on Nats!

Then we will be the only friend left.

Playing solitaire while the others go off to their World Series.

Sigh, again.

The A's considering Vlad...

Every AL West team but us. We know he excells in our park.

Yeah, but his back is so bad he runs like he gotta dump in his pyants.

Hey, hey Vlad! You got shit in yo pants! Stupid…

We know he's getting older too.
Everyone thought he was done before last year.

Then he goes and wins the 2010 DH award. I don’t care if he can’t run, if he can drive in runs batting #3 or #4 that’s what counts.

It's not like Texas is a hitter's ballpark or anything.
C'mon now. I'd bet that 90% of the HR's Vlad hit out would make it out of ANY stadium.

I think if he’s open to playing in Seattle Jack should make a play for him.

I'm curious whether that's 90% of 15 or 29?
Check it out

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5737/splits Only 3 more home runs hit at home rather than away.

14/29 last year would have been out in any stadium.

Interestingly, 1 of his homeruns would have been a homerun in 0 stadiums.

http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2010_3925&type=hitter

Was it accidentally ruled a home run or something?
OK, and instead of an expensive two-year commitment to a right handed batter

why not give a cheap one year commitment to a younger player who fits the park better and has no history of injuries?

There are other cheaper, younger, healthier options that can do what Vlad can do.
I am happy that Lookout Landing has come as far as it has, and will now keep my mouth shut.
Old and brokenish.

Which is lame. I remember back when he was going to sign with the Angels, he actually wanted to sign here (his mom really liked Seattle, and he’s a mama’s boy) but we made no effort because we were too scared to ask Ichiro to move. Which we later did anyway.

And 2004 would have been much different.
Well...

- small sample size in Safeco
- our park kills right handed batters
- Vlad is aging and could collapse
- Vlad has battled injuries in the past and offers zero defensive value
- Vlad is likely to be expensive or seek a multi-year deal due to his good season in Texas

I just don’t see any reason for us to be interested in him over Matsui or Cust

-Vlad has never expressed any interest in playing in Seattle
Ooohhh forgot about that one!
I'm pretty sure that's wrong though I'd have a hell of a time tracking down archived news on it.
I don't think Vlad has ever expressed interest in playing here

I think we’d remember that

I think you're right.

I don’t have the time to track anything down, but I remember he wanted to play in Seattle.

It's not that I don't believe you, but I'd love to see the evidence of this
(sorry if that came off assholish, I legitimately do not remember him ever expressing interest in playing for the Mariners)
It didn't come off as assholish, no worries.

I wish I could easily post a link, it’s just something I seem to remember pretty clearly.

I remember it too, and I hardly paid attention in 04
I also remember his agent saying they were surprised we did not even talk to him.
Watching him run is like watching a double amputee try on his new legs for the first time.
The only concern I would have is L/R balance at the top of the lineup, since you're likely looking at

Ichiro, Ackley, Smoak and DH near the top by the end of 2011, but that’s still not even close to worth the additional investment in money and years to Vlad

The O's are pushing for Bartlett.

I think we should make a push for him if he is available.

Mariners, along with Padres D'backs, interested in Jorge Cantu, says Tim Brown
Mariners in on every non Type A FA!

Kick the shit out’em tires Z!

Love it.

Zduriencik is also a member of the Dave Sims Sweet Hat Club.
Mariners are also interested in Kevin Gregg apparently.

According to Ken Rosenthal.

Now all we need to do is find Kevin Zaun.
Is his website awesome?

If so, I am interested.

I just can't see this team giving a multiyear contract to any reliever available
Shoulda signed Putz
STOP THE MOTHAFUCKIN' PRESSES
# Ryan Divish TNTmariners Jack Z on being close to possible deals: “I’d say it’s possible. There are some nice dialogues going.”
# Ryan Divish TNTmariners Jack Z: “That’s not a promise something is going to happen. But they are at the point where something could happen.”

SHIT IS ON

O-LIV-O! O-LIV-O! O-LIV-O!

WORLD MUFUGGIN SERIES!

This is the most Jack Z statement of all time

“we may or may do something. Something might happen that thing might be imminent, but it might not be. We’re talking to others”

I love Jack Z.
Unless he fucks shit up...
!!!

Shannon Drayer
Sources tell me #Mariners are targeting Luis Valbuena for need at second.

How would he apply to the maxim that they always get better when they leave?
They turn into superstars when they come back?

Unless they left as superstars (Griffey)

Beyond the whole Ackley thing, that would be awesome
He's pretty bad
Can he still play a little SS?
Not really!

I’d still be fine with taking a shot at him though.

I liked his approach while he was in Seattle/Tacoma, and that lefty bat is nice

I think he’s got a lot of life left in him

He was almost 2 wins below replacement with the bat in a little over 300 ABs.

No thanks.

I worked well with Boone
It worked well with Boone
Prospect Insider says the Mariners are close to signing a position player.

It’s PI-exclusive though.

Details....

Who has ’em?

Well gosh that certainly is worth paying for
Beltre -> Ranger Rumors.
I thought black people didn't like skating
Haha fuck Mike Young
Can they please just make a move

Any sort of a move. I need something to write.

You can create a short story starring an albino rhinocerous and his peppy robot companion named Squeek .
Oh goody, the Rangers are shopping Michael Young.
What would you do if the Mariners got Michael Young?

I mean you’ve hated him for so long.

Man, I really cannot stand Mike Young

That said, if he plays well I likes him

Of course Texas would have to inherit one of our problems
With his contract, I'd never forgive GMZ.
Only 3 more years!
Meh

Thats a pretty big contract for a guy who just turned 34.

Rosenthal reporting that the Rangers might pick up some of the contract.
Like Chone Figgins

I would like him if he did well, but my hate would grow if he performed poorly. And something tells me the Arlington—→Safeco transition wouldn’t go too well.

But he's the best player in the AL West!
Laugh, embrace all the writing material
Hope someone dusts off a Matt Young jersey.

1990: 8-18 record, 1.9 WAR.

So the Rangers had two highly touted 1B prospects and will likely have traded them both
According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Rangers are working on a deal that would send Chris Davis and Darren O’Day to the Cubs.
Davis has struggled to get comfortable at the big league level, but he could be a solution for the Cubs at first base. It’s not clear who the Rangers would get in return as part of the proposed deal, but it’s possible that they could have interest in either Welington Castillo or Robinson Chirinos, two young catchers who are currently blocked at the big league level by Geovany Soto.
That just leaves a spot open for their upcoming Pujols trade.
Don't forget in the past trading Texiera and Adrian Gonzalez.
Beltre to 3rd and Mike Young to 1b?
Now I'm just spitting nonsense.
Christ Davis blows anyway.
Tis the season.
.

So much for the Saunders/Matt Diaz platoon

Foiled by those big spending, free-wheeling Pirates again!
Zach Greinke

If Seattle was seriously in on Adrian Gonzalez so that we could flip him at the All Star break, then theoretically we will be going hard after Greinke as well right?

Your screenname is going to blow my dyslexic fucking mind.

Also, we shouldn’t really go hard on any one year rental since our team will suck next year. Grienke is also probably a harder sell on a long term contract and I have a feeling we were never that hard on him anyway.

Not to nitpick, but he'd really be a two year rental.

That said, I’m not sure I see much of a match trade-wise between the Royals and the Mariners, but then again, I don’t “trust the process” either so what do I know.

Cliff Lee signing with the Angels would be hilarious just to see everyone do a instant 180 on him.
FUCK THAT SHIT

You stay away from my Cliff, ya fucking dumbass team.

What's a 180 from "Meh, he played here for two months?"
shtnom owt rof ereh deyalp eh hem
Theres talk of Pena to the Cubs.

Heyman reporting right now.

Yea, that's been confirmed by MLB.com

$10M / 1yr.

Taking the Beltre route.
