I would never buy a jersey of a player on a team I don’t root for just because he’s elite. I do own David Price’s Rays jersey, but only because he’s a hometown hero.
Man, if only you guys did this at the Salt Lake games...
I got scalped Canada-Sweden tickets, 2nd row from the ice, for under face value 20 minutes before the game. They were less than how much a paid for the nosebleeds for the US game a saw earlier in the day. It was at that moment that I grew to love Americans undervalue international hockey if there’s not the stars and stripes sewn across the uni.
I like that your podcast covers things outside of baseball.
I like listening to Bill Simmons’s podcasts when they are about movies, TV shows, and random stories in different sports. I hate listening to his podcasts when they are devoted to one topic or sport. It’s nice to have variety and hear others opinions on what is happening in the world. You guys nail the idea of podcasting and have good chemistry while doing it.
I mean, I guess I can understand it with the spreads they have in the locker rooms. And I guess the travel could cause them to eat poorly. But it just seems like they would lose weight during the season, like in every other sport.
Going back and looking at the first video he did, it was actually (relatively) normal, there were a few weird things but nothing approaching the sabremetrics video. He even had somewhat interesting things to say about the arbitration process at times. I’m guessing that first show was what Fox thought they were going to be seeing in the future. What happened between then and now?!?! Did he have a stroke?
I honestly think the Bowden video was meant to make fun of stat geeks.
Or an attempt to cater to the stereotype. “Hey look here, geeks! Boobs! I know you’ve never seen them, so enjoy these new stats!”
This is the main reason why I want to know Theo Epstein’s reaction to the production. He knew what Bowden was doing and that’s why he said Carmine was a male in order to throw Bowden off guard.
Two more things come up. For one, he says if he had UZR in his day, the Kelly trade wouldn’t have happened. I feel like Kelly’s fielding wasn’t the reason he thought it was a bad trade. Shockingly, he doesn’t understand what UZR is.
Also when they are showing the shitty-version-of-Ken-Burns pictures of Devon White, one of them clearly shows him leaping for a home run and the ball being about 3 feet to his left. Do only two pictures of Devon White exist?
I will be listening to this until Lost starts.
Off-topic, unless you cover this later in the podcast, but do you guys have any insight on Rafael DePaula?
blueside714 - February 23, 2010
None at all
That’s new news.
Jeff Sullivan - February 23, 2010
What else are you two queens going to do up there?
Gonna finally tie the knot?
Robert - February 23, 2010
Jonathan Toes?
Eyeball Kid - February 23, 2010
Who spoke first?
Sam Page - February 23, 2010
Matthew
Jeff Sullivan - February 23, 2010
Ok
I figured it out when you started talking about moving. Also why the Russia jersey?
Sam Page - February 23, 2010
Because Ovechkin is the greatest athlete in the world
Jeff Sullivan - February 23, 2010
Weird.
I would never buy a jersey of a player on a team I don’t root for just because he’s elite. I do own David Price’s Rays jersey, but only because he’s a hometown hero.
Sam Page - February 23, 2010
Also I've always wanted a Russian hockey jersey anyway
Jeff Sullivan - February 23, 2010
You greatly underestimate Ovechkin
OlSalty - February 23, 2010
There's a weirder story behind the Ovechkin jersey!
Matthew - February 23, 2010
I would. For Ovechkin.
royalcurve - February 23, 2010
Would you buy a Felix Venezuelan jersey?
I would.
Wilder. - February 23, 2010
I guess. I really like Venezuela's jerseys actually,
but I’d sooner buy a Johan Venezuela jersey. Granted, Felix is 1-0 in head-to-head grandslams, so the choice is not automatic…
Sam Page - February 23, 2010
Nice recovery after all that hockey talk
Poochie - February 23, 2010
I don't think I'll ever get tired of this Jim Bowden thing.
Eyeball Kid - February 23, 2010
Belarus
I would hear the first phoneme and think “Belletrix”, thinking that maybe the witch from Harry Potter had her own country and hockey team.
katal - February 23, 2010
Who is Jonathan Toes?
It’s “Taves”.
abender20 - February 23, 2010
You would think after hearing me butcher Sweden and schadenfreude that people would get
that I cannot actually speak English.
Matthew - February 23, 2010
You get a pass on schadenfreude because it's a word that has become wildly pervasive across the net but no one uses it in conversation.
abender20 - February 23, 2010
Probably because no one knows how to actually pronounce it. You made a bold move and it bit you in the ass. These things happen.
abender20 - February 23, 2010
The irritating thing is that I do know how to pronounce it. Which is how I know I mucked it up.
I just really suck at talking.
Matthew - February 23, 2010
You can redeem yourself in the next podcast by showing us the correct way to say it.
Or, better yet, you can say it the wrong way and some of us would trust you.
JonBBT - February 24, 2010
I am no one.
shah-den-froy-duh.
Avenue Q is also helpful. Sort of.
harkening - February 23, 2010
I was being polite. I know how to pronounce it.
abender20 - February 23, 2010
Just ask a Canadian for a ticket to the gold medal game.
They’re polite and will give it up.
Kirk - February 23, 2010

SethGrandpa - February 23, 2010
what
Jeff Sullivan - February 23, 2010
Mormons apprently don't love hockey.
It was awesome.
SethGrandpa - February 23, 2010
Utah only knows the Jazz.
Their sports news is fixated on the Jazz 365 days of the year.
Wilder. - February 23, 2010
To be fair, I think there are a couple devoted to Utah and BYU football.
Maybe even BYU, Utah St., or Utah hoops.
SethGrandpa - February 24, 2010
Oh definitely.
But as for professional level sports, Utah fixates itself on the Jazz only. Although, there are a ton of Angels fans because of the AAA team. Grrrrr…
Wilder. - February 24, 2010
I definitely got a straight-up free ticket for US-Norway but that was kind of flukey
There were a bunch of people outside selling at face though
Nick S - February 23, 2010
Kaspars Daugavins.
I was not even close.
MarinerManMatt - February 23, 2010
Laughed so hard at all the Bowden talk.
My god…
JonBBT - February 23, 2010
Just for the record, team Belarus has the Kostitsyn brothers although Andrei is hurt.
They have three players I’ve heard of if you include Grabovski of Toronto, who I think is also hurt.
kentcheesehead - February 23, 2010
Still more fun than Latvia, who just lost a tough one in OT to the Czechs.
kentcheesehead - February 23, 2010
And Ruslan Salei
Mariner John - February 24, 2010
Somebody sign Jeff up for Dave Sim's media coaching classes.

Janic - February 23, 2010
I would donate money for this.
Robert - February 23, 2010
Me too.

Fun stuff. Keep it going.

If you guys ever come up with an opening theme, I hope it isn't as corny as Fangraphs.
Goose - February 23, 2010
I want Spanish Flea
Poochie - February 23, 2010
In regards to an opening theme, you should hold a contest.
I’m sure there’s plenty of musicians on LL. Winner gets a free shout-out!
I Lick Squirrels - February 24, 2010
Yakety Sax
JAH - February 24, 2010
49:20
Did one of you guys unzip your pants in front of the mic?
Edgar for Pres - February 24, 2010
They did speculate that Jim Bowden "whipped it out" in the cut footage.
It was more of a backpack, luggage, CD holder zipper sound rather than pants.
Janic - February 24, 2010
Jesus Jeff
did you take speed before doing this podcast? You sound like Dave Cameron!
brayden04 - February 24, 2010
The part you don't get to hear is the 20 minute pre-podcast warmup
Neither of us ever feels like talking before we do these
Jeff Sullivan - February 24, 2010
I have a question...
Do baseball players really gain weight during the season? I’d be surprised if that was actually the case.
brayden04 - February 24, 2010
Yeah, I think they tend to lose some weight.
But they also lose their muscle they built up during the offseason because they don’t do hardcore workouts (which Jeff and Matthew mentioned).
Wilder. - February 24, 2010
Yes, they do
Jeff Sullivan - February 24, 2010
I'm surprised.
I mean, I guess I can understand it with the spreads they have in the locker rooms. And I guess the travel could cause them to eat poorly. But it just seems like they would lose weight during the season, like in every other sport.

Any chance you can get these podcasts up at the Zune Marketplace?
It’d be nice to be able to subscribe to you guys and have it download automatically.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - February 24, 2010
I'm trying.
Matthew - February 24, 2010
Another thing about the Bowden video

27 minutes and no Jim Bowden
I want my money back
seattlebruin - February 24, 2010
Keep going.
Scruffy Lefty - February 24, 2010
Right as they were daring us to turn it off I was reaching for the FF button
Poochie - February 24, 2010
If you interview someone - Can we do former Mariners
Like Carl Everett?
Scruffy Lefty - February 24, 2010
So 2010 has already given us LL Podcasts and Sabermetrics 101 before spring training even starts
I can’t even imagine how good the rest of the year on LL is going to be
seattlebruin - February 24, 2010
"Can I borrow your wife for 11-and-a-half minutes?"
I just want to show her this video…no I swear, just a video. About balls…I mean..baseball.
brayden04 - February 24, 2010
So after watching the video again...
Two more things come up. For one, he says if he had UZR in his day, the Kelly trade wouldn’t have happened. I feel like Kelly’s fielding wasn’t the reason he thought it was a bad trade. Shockingly, he doesn’t understand what UZR is.

Damn you guys and your hockey
Dewey N - February 24, 2010
Jeff all really need to do is slow down a little bit.
InSpokane - February 24, 2010
I have regular speed and rant speed
Jeff Sullivan - February 24, 2010
Your rant speed is like identical to Matthew's
it’s wonderful
seattlebruin - February 24, 2010
Rant speed is good. But regular speed needs to slow down.
InSpokane - February 24, 2010
I like that the podcast was an hour long, not two.
Wilder. - February 24, 2010
"Go back to drinking if I wanna get high"
Drinking what?
Dewey N - February 24, 2010
Marijuana
Jeff Sullivan - February 24, 2010
How unconventional
