Yusmeiro Petit Clears Waivers

It's weird to think that a 25 year old righty starter with a career 2.5 K/BB and no injury history could pass by unclaimed, but that's exactly what happened with Yusmeiro Petit, as he's been outrighted to AAA Tacoma. Of course, he has 28 strikeouts and zero walks against opposing pitchers, so that kind of inflates the numbers a little bit, but still, you'd think that someone like, I dunno, San Diego could've used him for nothing. Maybe instead of Jon Garland. Just spitballing here.

This now sets us up with a probable Tacoma rotation featuring five of the following:

Doug Fister
Jason Vargas
Luke French
Nick Hill
Garrett Olson
Yusmeiro Petit
Ryan Feierabend

This isn't the sort of depth you should brag about to your friends, but it is the sort of depth that, if one of your friends asks "so do you have any depth?" you're all "yeah no we're cool" and then he's like "how good?" and you're like "oh y'know whatever" and he's like "no seriously who do you got" and you're like "oh just some guys" and he's like "whatever man you wanna get a soda?" and you're like "I don't drink that stuff anymore" and he's all "oh excuse me your majesty" and you're like "yeah ok" and you roll your eyes because seriously how many times do you have to repeat yourself

Gaby Hernandez cleared waivers too, offering no depth at all, for anything.

Tacoma is going to be NASTY this year.

Watch yourself PCL. Saunders will probably be there, maybe Tui, maybe Moore. Possibly even Ackley by the end of the season.

You are one hundred percent good news, Jeff Sullivan
Also, welcome to Portland!

Let me know if you need a place to watch games in Sellwood. Only there though, I’m useless for every other neighborhood.

I wish we had a legit high upside SP prospect in AAA

Our SP is boring as hell.

We might have some in double-A.

Close enough?

Are you sure?

I do like some of the guys we have but should I really be excited about them?

Legit high upside? Yes

Chance of reaching that upside good? No.

That's fair.

A double-A rotation is likely to include Pineda, Robles, and Hensley. All interesting arms, all with their own problems. And, if we take Jeff’s projected Tacoma rotation, then poor Dan Cortes also at least starting the season in double-A. Really, really talented crew. Still has problems.

Vavaro?
Varvaro probably isn't starting anymore.
Also,

Do you think Robles starts out the year in AA or do you see him getting there mid-year? Between Detroit and here he only spent 70 innings in high A, and his time in High Desert showed an increase in walks and a drop in strikeouts. Is it more of a protect him from High Desert thing or does the club think he is ready to advance to AA? He is only 21 in 2010

I'd give him some time in High Desert to iron out his mechanics a bit.

I’m not a decision-maker though. Besides, they probably know how wonky his mechanics are and are having him work on them.

Is it really that talented compared to other systems

Any of those guys gonna be much better than back of the rotation SP?

Pineda was reputed to have #2 potential

Don’t know if that’s still the case.

If healthy, yes.

It depends on what you think of his elbow.

Makes sense

Yeah, he has been injured a lot and that’s really concerning, so that’s the risk part of the equation, but the reward is still there maybe.

Not a lot.

he was averaging about 30 IP a month from May to August in Wisconsin in 2008, which isn’t bad by minor league standards.

I’m a bit concerned by the fact that he had this elbow issue which coincided with us asking him to pitch more than double what he had ever done previously, because by reasonable standards we still don’t have a clear notion of if he’ll be able to hold out for an entire season, year in, year out.

I move him to double-A, but I’m patient about bringing him up the rest of the way. Knowing the M’s though, they’ll probably factor in the weather early on and start him in HD, though.

High risk, high reward.
Question

Who do you have in the bullpen not in the above group after Aardsma, Lowe, Kelly, and League. Texeira? White? Someone else?

Right now I think White/Texeira and Olson round out the pen
