That's it, I give up. I give up trying to figure out this team.
Credit to Jon Shields, who caught this on the latest BA transaction log.
So, Petit was signed, then put on waivers, then outrighted, then released, then re-signed. I've no idea what might've made this latest set of moves necessary, but I do have an idea why I'm so obsessive about removing the pith from a grapefruit. Way I figure, all the extra work and anticipation increases the eventual deliciousness. Mmm, grapefruit.
In all honesty, I'm happy to have Petit back, but I don't need to write anything about why, because I already have, like two or three times.

I really want to know what's on that poster on the door.

Cameron said it was some sort of procedural move.
He brought up Mike Wilson, who went through the same thing. Removed from 40-man via waivers, outrighted, released, re-signed. Confusing stuff.

I saw that, but I don't actually know what that means

Here's how I understand it, someone that knows more can be free to correct me.
A player can be outrighted to the minors once in his career without him being able to refuse the assignment. After that, the player can either accept the assignment or opt for free agency. If they don’t opt for free agency they need to be let go by the team (either traded or released) within 10 days.

So I take it that means he requested his release from assignment to see if someone else would sign him where he'd have a better shot at making the club, nobody did, so he signed back with us?

We outrighted him to AAA in February
So, as I understand it, this was his second outright to the minors which means that we had no choice to release or trade him. I think the spirit of the rule is to attempt to take away some of the indentured servitude of players out of options and give them an opportunity to jump on with a team that offers a better chance at the majors, but in situations like this I think there was mutual interest in continuing the relationship and was a planned release and re-sign to meet Major League rules.

Good stuff.
That makes sense.

Maybe as insurance in case Lee starts the year on the DL?
You could then throw RRS in the 2nd spot, then Snell, Vargas/Petit or Petit/Vargas?

Seems like they changed their minds.
