I’m pumped, I’ve got some live shows coming up on April 5th I get to see Midlake, who I’ve never seen live before. Has anyone here seen them live, how was it?
The week after i see the Drive By Truckers, and The Hold Steady, sadly not together like I did one magical night two years ago.
As I sit here in this once serene computer lab listening to some guy blast yesterday’s Green Day and Coldplay top-40s into his ear-sockets, I suddenly have an overwhelming urge to buy an amazing unheard-of local CD at one of our humble Seattle record shops.
Birds on a Wire music festival today and tomorrow in Pullman
Folky goodness over two days downtown. Not that I expect anyone on here to actually travel to Pullman, but it’s kind of a big deal for us Palouse kids.
Part Beachwood Sparks, part American Analog Set, part early Pink Floyd… makes me want to leave my office and pogo stick around the neighborhood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjhDC7Az-uM
But not love it. Perhaps with time. Just not anything particularly new here—just the Black Keys being the Black Keys (which is something they do quite well, granted).
I can’t stand Zooey Deschanel. I can’t explain it, but her music makes me mad. It literally makes me mad when I listen to it. A week ago we were doing chores around the house with the 500 Days Of Summer soundtrack playing, and then she came on, and I didn’t want to do chores anymore.
I've been going back to those gold soundz of the 90s too
Such as Harnessed in Slums which was/is one of my favorite off-kilter, anthemic rock songs.
And if you ratchet up the ‘off-kilter,’ you get Polvo’s Vibracobra which I could listen to 10 straight times. I’ve done it before.
If you ratchet down the recording quality, but keep the anthemic quality, you get Eric’s Trip and Listen
Or you could listen to pop punk like The Mr. T Experience’s Sackcloth and Ashes (Still waiting for the movie version of Dr. Frank’s book ‘King Dork’ but it’ll probably star Michael Cera, and pdb’s head was explode, so….nevermind).
And, thanks to the Pavement greatest hits collection that just came out (and their reunion tour), er, Gold Soundz
This isn’t the greatest thing ever, but I just heard Detachable Penis again last week. A minor novelty hit in the 1990s.
I've been on a real Eric's trip kick for a while now
“Belly” and some other songs from Love Tara, “Girlfriend”, “Need” and “Listen”, etc.
I’m still mad I missed their reunion show at the subpop anniversary thingy at Marymoor.
Dr. Frank of the MTX was basically my hero. I’m glad his whole book career is more remunerative than his music thing, but I miss witty punk.
Only 6 of the 16 are from their last two albums. And arguably the two worst tracks on there (Little Ghost and Prickly Thorn) are from those. But still, a lot of good stuff.
Here’s my bit of excitement for the coming months: The National, one of my favorite bands, is releasing a new album, High Violet, on May 10th. This is the part where I’m briefly horrified at it being nearly five years since Alligator was released. Moving on. A track from the new album can be found at their website, going by the name of “Bloodbuzz, Ohio”, which probably marks the first time the phrase “I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees” has ever been spoken in musical history.
Also, Bryan Devendorf is a really awesome drummer and somehow both marc and I forgot him when we were talking about drummer like two weeks ago. Here are some examples from their last album, which were probably my favorite three songs from it anyway (not as crazy about it as most people were):
Teej was right, People Under The Stairs are awesome.
I mentioned it in the off topic, but Happy Birthday has a great sound and very infectious music. I recommend them to any pop lover.
It’s back to being summer which means I’ve been listening to hip hop a lot more lately. One of my favorite summer songs? I’m glad you asked. Speed Law by Mos Def. I dare anyone to drive to it and not feel like a badass. Another great one is Shadowboxin’ by GZA. I can’t wait to start driving again.
I’ve been listening to a good bit of Aesop Rock lately. If you can tolerate his voice (Teej can’t), he has great production, writing, and flow. See: Getaway Car. On the local front, RA Scion (of Common Market) is releasing a concept album today called Victor Shade. Victor Shade is the alter-ego of the Marvel superhero The Vision. From what has leaked, it’s absurd. Check out Sway (two streaming links below the flyer). Unbelievable production and exactly what you’d expect from RA Scion with respect to vocal work.
This is because they have one song I really love, and nothing else quite matches it.
That song is this one, “All the Wars.” The opening drum beat/guitar hook beguile me. I have been beguiled.
Anyway, I’ve got a few albums of theirs, but I don’t listen to them much. The new one didn’t hit me with beguilement right off the bat, so perhaps I’m being too harsh.
That was
A super sweet jam, and a good music video.

Turn down your mother-deafening headphones.

New Black Keys single

I love thems.
lemonverbena - March 26, 2010
Like it!
But not love it. Perhaps with time. Just not anything particularly new here—just the Black Keys being the Black Keys (which is something they do quite well, granted).
Torrid - March 26, 2010
Last album was different?
In a good way!
JY - March 26, 2010
Blakroc?
That’s true—I had forgotten about that. They are definitely no one trick pony.
Torrid - March 26, 2010
Attack and Release.
JY - March 26, 2010
Which is to say...
I hadn’t heard of the Blakroc one, and am looking into it right now.
JY - March 26, 2010
I have come to the point that I don't like most new music.
I don’t see the appeal of any new band whose name is an animal.
I like the new She & Him record because it has an “olden” kind of sound.
I’ve been listening to a ton of ’90s alternative lately, in the form of Reel Big Fish, Smashing Pumpkins and the Offspring.
katal - March 26, 2010
Bands who have released debut albums over the last year or so that I've liked:
Girls, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, um.

Oh, oh my god
I can’t stand Zooey Deschanel. I can’t explain it, but her music makes me mad. It literally makes me mad when I listen to it. A week ago we were doing chores around the house with the 500 Days Of Summer soundtrack playing, and then she came on, and I didn’t want to do chores anymore.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2010
I seem to remember seeing her in a Cotton commercial recently and really being annoyed.
Bicycle Rider - March 26, 2010
She drives me absolutely insane
and not in the way that she apparently drives some other guys insane
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2010
Does she remind you of someone you dislike, or anything?
I’m trying to pinpoint the cause of this distaste.
katal - March 26, 2010
She is whiny
InSpokane - March 26, 2010
She's attractive
But her music and looks don’t make my ears or loins tingle!
ungoreatstefan - March 26, 2010
I don't know!
I think it’s her voice. I don’t mind her as an actress.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2010
I totally agree with you
royalcurve - March 27, 2010
I think I just hate her because of that movie
OlSalty - March 27, 2010
You, sir, are the first person I have ever come across to have this sentiment.
I have heard the majority of people I know, both male and female, discuss at one point or another how much they adore her.
katal - March 26, 2010
I'm with Jeff I would be a happy person if I never herd her voice ever again.
InSpokane - March 26, 2010
I'm sort of in this camp. I don't hate her speaking voice, but uh, I'm not going to pick up the new She and Him.

I'm so sorry you missed the Subpop anniversary show.
Between the reunions and the newer bands who were clearly excited to be on the same billing as so many legends, it was incredible.

I just realized the former frontman for Beulah recently released a solo album.

Under Great White Northern Lights is a pretty good live album by the White Stripes.
Especially the cover of Jolene. Haven’t watched the DVD that apparently goes with it though
Mariner John - March 26, 2010
I've always liked that cover!
I love the White Stripes first four albums, but don’t care for their more recent efforts. What’s the balance like on GWNL?
katal - March 26, 2010
Their version
Of Jolene is fantastic. Does that live album also have their cover of Walking With The Ghost?
ungoreatstefan - March 26, 2010
It does not.

Since a friend showed me the video,
I’ve been listening to “Smack My Bitch Up” by The Prodigy a lot.
Kickass video that is decidedly NSFW due to TITS (also contains drug use, violence).
It’s good brain-bleach for me when I have songs stuck in my head.
appleshampoo - March 26, 2010
I'm taking a break from staring at pitch f/x data
Here’s my bit of excitement for the coming months: The National, one of my favorite bands, is releasing a new album, High Violet, on May 10th. Also, Bryan Devendorf is a really awesome drummer and somehow both marc and I forgot him when we were talking about drummer like two weeks ago. Here are some examples from their last album, which were probably my favorite three songs from it anyway (not as crazy about it as most people were):
Mistaken for Strangers
Brainy
Squalor Victoria
JY - March 26, 2010
Darren King also got left out of the drummer discussion.
Mute Math – Typical
Mute Math – Chaos
Mute Math – Control
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2010
I missed said discussion,
but was Erin Tate mentioned? And Kasey Dietz?
Woodinville_12thMan - March 26, 2010
No and no.
JY - March 26, 2010
Great call on Devendorf.
marc w - March 27, 2010
So I've been listening to Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks" almost nonstop for two days
Such an awesome song. What’s everyone’s favorite Zeppelin song?
Robert Lintott - March 26, 2010
I've never been a huge Zeppelin fan, but the inclusion of "That's the Way" in Almost Famous makes it, by defaul, my favorite Zeppelin song.
That’s the Way
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2010
I'm a sucker for all of Zeppelin's major tracks.
Sure it’s a cliche, but on the other hand, let’s face it: Immigrant Song is totally badass.
My favorite lesser-known Zeppelin song? Probably either Achilles Last Stand or Out on the Tiles.
katal - March 26, 2010
I've had this song stuck in my head all day
I think I’ll second That’s the Way as my favourite. Or Heartbreaker.
Eyeball Kid - March 26, 2010
.
Frightened Rabbit – Keep Yourself Warm
The Low Anthem – Charlie Darwin
Choir of Young Believers – Next Summer
Mew – Symmetry
The Czars – Paint the Moon
Aesop Rock – Battery
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2010
Fogel was right
I liked Modern Leper the most for months and months, but Keep Yourself Warm took over the top slot. It’s amazing.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2010
The way the song builds is like no other.
It gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2010
I love a good song that builds
I would never want anything else. Keeping Warm (We Were Promised Jetpacks) is the same way, although it stutters a bit towards the end.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2010
I'm a minute into this song and not really feeling it
its not bad, but I can’t stand voices like his.
And now it changed into a different song, weird.
bluemax - March 26, 2010
Definitely a better song from 1:30 on
bluemax - March 26, 2010
Oh wait
That’s because I paused the Youtube video and the link lemon posted up above started playing.
bluemax - March 26, 2010
I have never listened to Frightened Rabbit but after listening to Keep Yourself Warm, my interest is definitely piqued.
Torrid - March 27, 2010
Don't listen to their first album
Jeff Sullivan - March 27, 2010
I will steer clear!
Torrid - March 27, 2010
I downloaded the Midnight Organ Fight and am definitely liking this.
Plus, they are playing in Milwaukee in May when I’ll still be here. Now to find a friend to go with…
Torrid - March 28, 2010
The rest of the album is a tad slower
Dewey N - March 27, 2010
Does anyone like Sharks Keep Moving?
I just recently got into them, I need to get an album. I really dig the vibe of the instrumentals. Some really good stuff.

As much as I love Sabzi, I'm excited to hear RA over some more intense beats.
Teej - March 29, 2010
Yeah, it's time to experience something new and this is certainly that. He has the ability to be absolutely vicious.
He put the video out for Soothsayer, which is interesting.
abender20 - March 29, 2010
Good man.
My current favorite P.U.T.S. tracks:
Empty Bottles of Water
The Breakdown
Teej - March 29, 2010
The Breakdown is my favorite of theirs. It has the funky baseline of classic Outkast and really suits their style.
abender20 - March 29, 2010
By the way, the new Aloha album - "Home Acres" - is quite good.
Never had heard of them before, but they are a great little indie band.
SethGrandpa - March 26, 2010
I like it, but found it a bit disappointing
This is because they have one song I really love, and nothing else quite matches it.

The Marked Men – A Little Time
A Sunny Day in Glasgow – So Bloody, So Tight
Atlas Sound – Walkabout

Have a Nice Life – Trespassers W
And this mash-up by the Hood Internet – Two Weeks of Hip-Hop (Grizzly Bear+ Dead Prez)
marc w - March 27, 2010
Heres another Grizzly Bear mash up.
This one by Girl Talk. Its pretty old, but still.
Bicycle Rider - March 27, 2010
