Second Box Score Of The Year

In last year's charity game, the Padres matched a bunch of their regulars up against a bunch of our reserves and warm bodies and needed ten innings to win by a run. In this year's charity game, the Padres matched a bunch of their regulars up against a bunch of our reserves and warm bodies and lost by six. The only thing more embarrassing than when you try really hard to win an exhibition game is when you try really hard and get thumped.

Hot diggity damn!

Interesting to see Matt Stairs, Ryan Garko, and Tommy Everidge all go deep in the same game, as, handedness aside, they all share the same player profile. They all shared the same literal profile too until Stairs went and lost 31 pounds this winter. Mentioning what Stairs accomplished in four months at the age of 41 is a great way to make your adult friends feel like shit. Also worth noting that Stairs has managed a career .839 OPS over parts of 17 seasons despite never really trying to get in shape. You know why I don't care when a player reports to camp in the best shape of his life? Matt Stairs.

Congratulations to Dustin Ackley for recording his first hit as a Mariner. His first hit of 4,597. I don't want to exaggerate or put unreasonable expectations on a guy or anything but I'm pretty sure Dustin Ackley is going to be the greatest hitter of all time.

Grand slam for Everidge, by the way. I was wondering who the Mike Morse and Mike Wilson backers would latch onto this year. Everidge is the early favorite, and not only because there's so much to latch onto.

I hope opposing managers pitch around Adrian Gonzalez all spring. That would just slay me. "We didn't want to give their best player a chance to beat us."

In Radhames Liz's last Major League appearance, he allowed six runs in a third of an inning. Today he allowed six runs in three-thirds of an inning, so things are looking up, I'd say.

Kyle Blanks: Professional Outfielder

Blanks_medium

The sad thing about the Padres' inevitable Gonzalez trade is that, by moving Gonzalez elsewhere and moving Blanks back to first, they'll be taking away their only two remaining sources of entertainment. You can only count on suspending David Eckstein from wires and flying him around the infield so many times before it starts to feel trite.

Tony Gwynn Jr. struck out today, which reminded me that Tony Gwynn Jr. struck out 65 times last season, while Tony Gwynn Sr. struck out 70 times between 1993 and 1996. Curse Mrs. Gwynn and her inferior genes.

Corey Patterson singled, walked, and stole a base today, and is being charged with false representation.

Greg Halman went 0-2 with a strikeout, and is not.

My understanding is that you have to register as a sex offender if you so much as mention Beamer Weems' name to a child. I have no idea who Beamer Weems is or what he looks like but I guarantee you that he's white, has a short swing, and is David Eckstein.

It’s working, asshole.

Yep... That made me laugh.....

Wasn't Liz supposed to be a hot prospect?

Has he just flamed out?

Yes.

This is really weird, and I was looking at pitch f/x data to see what happened. Unfortunately, the sample’s waaaaay too small to tell. He throws hard, but can’t seem to locate his offspeed stuff. And his FB just isn’t good enough to carry him in the majors.

Hilarious

I had to hold in a laugh in class when I read “Corey Patterson singled, walked, and stole a base today, and is being charged with false representation.” It’s funnier because we were talking about misrepresentation when I read it

You have no idea

just how funny that line is…especially to a Cubs fan. Woke my wife up and really pissed her off by laughing so hard at it.

Beamer Weems is what David Eckstine would look like if Eckstein followed the Matt Stairs diet plan

Beamer Weems

For best baseball name…ever.

I'm pretty sure Matt Stairs just got lost as a kid

on his daily trip between Tim Horton’s and the hockey rink and found himself on a baseball field where he just scared the other teams into throwing him meatballs. How a New Brunswick guy with that kind of build ended up in baseball is an enduring mystery.

Ackley
“Congratulations to Dustin Ackley for recording his first hit as a Mariner. His first hit of 4,597.

He’s going to need more than that to take the career hits record away from Ichiro. But he will. As a Mariner.

I'm trying to come up with a feeling for what Ackley is going to become.

I’m guessing you guys all think a comp to Shannon Stewart would be pessimistic or wrong? Better suggestions?

Chase Utley except worse at everything.
That's a stupid comparison
Chase Utley except BETTER at everything.
At least he won't be wrong
Chase Utley has 83 stolen bases in seven years.
And has only been caught eleven times.
Hey that pretty much describes me!
Radhame sure took a Lizzing.
HAHAHA

Wow… I think I blew a funny fuse.
Greg Halman also threw to the wrong base at one point

I like that we have Halman in the system, because he’s a constant reminder that this game is not about physical ability as much as it is about being smarter than a golden retriever.
