As Mariners fans, we all have two things in common:
1) We want the Mariners to make us happy
2) Failing that, we want other teams to make their fans sad
The M's, right now, are 6-7 - not bad, and certainly better than they were, but they're still littered with questions. There's a lot to be nervous about. So, with that in mind, I say we ease our collective mind by finding solace in the misfortune of others.
Rich Harden's velocity is down, his contact rate is way up, and he's walked or beaned more than a quarter of the batters he's faced
Ben Sheets' velocity is down, his contact rate is up, and he's recorded more walks than strikeouts
Nelson Cruz has seven home runs, while the rest of the Rangers have three
Brandon Wood is 4-39 with one walk and 12 strikeouts, dropping his career big league OBP to .209
The Red Sox just got swept in a four-game series at home by Tampa Bay, and are already six back of first place and 5.5 back of New York. David Ortiz blows
Miguel Batista is second on the Nationals in innings pitched
And last, but not least, while we'll always have Arthur Rhodes, at least we'll never have this.
Tie game, bottom of the 9th inning, 1 out, bases loaded, batter hits a shallow pop up, Milton Bradley catches it and then throws the ball into the stands to score the winning run?
It would be the bottom of the tenth in a playoff game, score still tied, and no runners on base
The batter hits a high fly ball onto the warning track, and the outfielder has plenty of time to get under it to make a routine catch. He sets up to make the catch above his head. As the ball comes down it bounces off the heel of his glove and over the fence for the game-winning home run.
"Barring a setback, the M's are looking to have Cliff Lee make his first Mariners start on May 2 at Safeco against the Rangers, manager Don Wakamatsu said today. "
Obviously his minor league numbers were inflated by his hitting environments, but even with the adjustment, dude has power. His MLB numbers are terrible, but it’s in scattered playing time and it’s only a few hundred at-bats, so I’m tempted to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Given his defense, I still think he could turn into an above-average third baseman. How crazy am I?
More specifically, he just can't figure out bendy things, and I don't think he ever will at this stage
Way too many swinging strikes. Doesn’t lay off enough pitches out of the zone. He deserves more time but in my opinion signs point to him not amounting to much.
Yeah LAA should spend a year to figure out if he can adapt to MLB pitching
He might be something like a 1 WAR player (don’t know much about his defense) and has potential but I think his upside is something like Marcus Thames and his downside is a bench player who can’t quite cut it in the majors.
Thank you, Jeff

I saw that play when it happened. Laughed on the floor for like 20 minutes

I'm trying to think of an analagous play in baseball.
It would be like going to bat for the other team and hitting a walk off homerun…all by accident.

It would be like going back for a ball...
Not hearing the outfielder call you off, running into him, and tearing his ACL.
Oh wait…

A walk-off balk?

How about...
Tie game, bottom of the 9th inning, 1 out, bases loaded, batter hits a shallow pop up, Milton Bradley catches it and then throws the ball into the stands to score the winning run?

This is the best analogy.
Good intentions (pickoff move), exact opposite result.

That play is like going for a fly ball on the warning track in the bottom of the ninth and having it bounce off your head for a walk-off home run.

That play is like being an Apple employee who gets to play with the company's new iPhone
but accidentally leaves it in a bar. Then it gets sold to a gadget news site.

What do people think of Brandon Wood?
