I guess I ought to warn you guys right now that this is going to be a busy day on the front page. You should probably go ahead and warn whoever it is you report to that you're going to have to do a lot of commenting. In the event that you don't report to anyone, congratulations! Or, you're homeless.
Shows you're most looking forward to in the next couple weeks?

Maybe Dark Tranquility on May 28 at Studio Seven?
I haven’t been to a show for a while but DT is always worth seeing.
lailaihei - April 23, 2010
Cool, I didn't know they were coming here.
Who else is playing that show?
theslothking - April 23, 2010
Threat Signal, Mutiny Within, and Blood And Thunder
I haven’t heard any of their music.
lailaihei - April 23, 2010
A new jazz fusion band I've run into
The Soil and Pimp Sessions. Here’s one of their charts, “Storm”
BrianL - April 23, 2010
They're the only jazz I can stand...
Suffocation is my favorite track
lailaihei - April 23, 2010
On Fridays, I call no man "Mister".
Unleash whatever you’ve got.
On the music topic, I’m not actually thinking ahead far enough to involve going to shows because I’m about to enter the time-suck which is finals and will last me two and a half weeks.
On the plus side, The National made The New York Times, and they’re streaming High Violet in the same article. The bad news? I’ve heard two songs and have found myself suspicious of the songwriting. Get back to me in a few hours on this one….
JY - April 23, 2010
Okay, I've listened to High Violet now.
Two songs that made a strong impression on me were Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks and Sorrow, but those just stood out as being positives, and I don’t think there was a clunker on there. I even found the much labored-over Lemonworld to be palatable, even though the NYT made it seem like they were embarrassed to have it on the album.
It gets the JY stamp of approval, I think. The lyrics were better than I thought they were going to be, it manages to capture a very specific mood, and I’m not crazy about it, but definitely want to listen to it again, which in my experience is one of the strongest endorsements as things I want to listen to again immediately and incessantly I end up discovering are shallow and worthless. I kind of miss Padma Newsome and wonder if this particular sound isn’t borrowing a bit from other large acts, but I think I like it better than Boxer.
JY - April 23, 2010
I've held off on listening to the whole thing so far,
but I might have to dive in when I get home. For me the lyrics are always obtuse, but after a while take on a Yorkian profundity that’s kind of hard to nail down. I apologize for typing “Yorkian profundity,” it’s too late for me to go back now.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
It's about right.
I’d probably come up with a different term for it, as I think that Berninger’s lyrics are a little more symbolic, but strangely more grounded in rather specific situations, whereas I look at most of what came out of “In Rainbows” and think “I would not allow this shit to fly were you not Radiohead”. Of course, back in the OK Computer era, I think you’re closer to being right. I can see a “Karma Police”-like concept filtering into Berninger’s work.
JY - April 23, 2010
Shows...
Perhaps Mono with the Twilight Sad @ Neumos on May 11? I wouldn’t mind going to see the Red Sparowes and Caspian next Thursday, but if it doesn’t work out, I won’t cry about it. Also Unnatural Helpers with Tacocat @ the Funhouse in late April (I think).
Frightened Rabbit play on a rather strange bill with Maps and Atlases on 5/16, so maybe that’d be my pick. Can’t really imagine those two together, though I like both of them.
marc w - April 23, 2010
"looking forward to" might be a bit of a stretch
but Poison Idea are playing in Portland tonight, at the East End. I’d like to think I’m still into them, but my musical tastes have evolved so much that I’m kinda nervous that I would go and then dislike them.
Next week Eddie Spaghetti is playing a solo show at Dante’s, on Wednesday. People mock the Supersuckers, but I’ve always loved them and Eddie puts on a good solo show – say what you will about ironic faux rock star attitude, but dude knows how to play a good country show.
pdb - April 23, 2010
Saw him a few years back
with the Railbenders in Denver. good times….
sliderinside - April 23, 2010
I've seen the Supersuckers and/or Eddie Spaghetti more times than I've seen my own parents
and they’re always awesome.
pdb - April 23, 2010
Get with it, dammit!
My lunch break is over in 15 minutes. Post! Post! Post!
Ike Clanton - April 23, 2010
Nobody tours KC
At least nobody I’m interested in seeing.
Ike Clanton - April 23, 2010
I did once!
It was terrible :( But hey, fountains
royalcurve - April 23, 2010
What band?
marc w - April 23, 2010
I guess it's a good thing I finished up this weeks project 2 days ago. I wasn't planning on doing any actual work anyways.
Oh and Maiden in two months!
Goose - April 23, 2010
I'm so mad I can't go to the Maiden show!
UP THE IRONS
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
Or your boss takes every Friday off from April to September so you don't have to worry about it.
On Monday, I’m going to see Demon Hunter and War of Ages at Studio Seven and then on Tuesday, A Day to Remember with August Burns Red at Showbox Sodo. Yep, I’m a metal head.
seattle_since_81 - April 23, 2010
Might have to go see Demon Hunter.
I saw them play with Extol years ago.
theslothking - April 23, 2010
I never listened to much Devin the Dude
I think I mentally lumped him in with all of the down-south garbage I loathe. Just got into some of his stuff, and hey it’s pretty good! Really creative, mellow, he sings his own hooks, comes across as kind of a humble guy which is pretty rare in rap. I haven’t got his new one yet, but he has quite a library.
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
I think you're the last hip hop fan in Seattle to start liking Devin the Dude.
Just weird that he’s probably more popular in Seattle than anywhere else.
marc w - April 23, 2010
Honestly, there is so much garbage in rap it is hard to winnow out the goods some times.
I was unfair to Devin and for that I apologize.
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
Not a shot at you, I mean, I'd never heard of the guy
But he kept doing shows here (despite being from Houston or wherever), and he got so much press…. I guess the credit here goes to the Stranger, who talked him up consistently since at least 2005-6 or whatever.
I’m not a big hip hop guy, but I finally listened to some of Devin’s stuff and I enjoyed it. I just think it’s a weird situation, where one city far removed from his home town (geographically, culturally) turns into a sort of home base for him.
marc w - April 23, 2010
It is funny, but it does kind of make sense.
Introspective, creative, humourous and humble are adjectives I’d associate way more with Cascadia then Houston.
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
I've liked him since I first heard him around 2000 (I think?), but I've never had an album.
I always thought of him more as the funny guy featured on other people’s songs. I should seek out some albums.
Teej - April 23, 2010
Devin the Dude rules
I love his stuff, Waiting to Inhale is such a fantastic album.
ungoreatstefan - April 23, 2010
Waiting to Inhale. Heh.
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
There's something in the water in Houston that allows rappers to make at least five albums a year.
Teej - April 23, 2010
Manraygun
Steve Nelson - April 23, 2010
Sad News Everyone, Voxtrot Is Breaking Up.

csiems - April 23, 2010
I've got some
Shows coming up in May and June after finals, Of Montreal, Beach House and Blitzen Trapper. I’m excited for all of them, I’ve never seen Of Montreal or Blitzen Trapper live before so I’m hoping for good things.
ungoreatstefan - April 23, 2010
That's right!
Of Montreal is apparently playing at my school tomorrow evening. And Ghostface Killah? I don’t know how to take that.
JY - April 23, 2010
Ghostface Killah is somebody that I would like to see live once, for sure.
seattle_since_81 - April 23, 2010
I saw Wu-Tang at the Showbox in the late '90s.
It was pretty awesome, even though Method Man wasn’t there.
Teej - April 23, 2010
An eight ball should do it.
waldo rojas - April 23, 2010
Wait
You get to see Of Montreal AND Ghostface? I am so thoroughly jealous words cannot express my jealousy.
ungoreatstefan - April 23, 2010
And Wiz Khalifa, not that I know who that is.
In reality, I might not have time to go, because I have to see my friend’s band play in a talent show earlier in the day and then have to run to a birthday party in the evening. I also have a major project due Tuesday. Exciting!
JY - April 23, 2010
Oh man
That’s too bad, I can imagine that would be a fantastic show.
ungoreatstefan - April 23, 2010
I had to make myself stop listening to new The National online.
Before I’m sick of “I’m afraid of Everyone” and “Bloodbuzz, Ohio” before the album even comes out. I’m more pumped about High Violet than I have been for any album in quite some time.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
That's hopeful, I guess?
I’ve listened to Bloobuzz and Terrible Love a few times and I’m still trying to figure out if I like it or not.
JY - April 23, 2010
Yeah I was late to the National party.
But now that I’m here, I’m all in.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
I've been here since Alligator.
I’m listening to the stream now and “Sorrow” may have just kind of blown my mind.
Way more hopeful about this album than I was ten minutes ago.
JY - April 23, 2010
Threat of being dragged to a She & Him concert
ABORT ABORT
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
Good lord, no.
YouTube that fucking cotton commercial and you should be properly unmotivated to listen to that putt-on bullshit twang nonsense.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
KILL ZOOEY
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
Don't do that please.
Teej - April 23, 2010
She is insufferable
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
At music or at everything?
I’ve seen approximately one movie with her in it and I’ve never heard her sing.
Teej - April 23, 2010
Elf was pretty rad.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
Music
I haven’t seen many movies with her but I’m afraid that, even if she’s a wonderful actress, she has been permanently tainted.
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
She's not a very good actress.
And, really, you haven’t seen “Almost Famous”? For shame.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
I said I haven't seen many, not any
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
Shit.
I suck.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
I know
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
(500) Days of Summer was an excellent movie as well.
She only plays one character in all her movies but she does it well. Big Trouble is funny too.
Hopefulmsfan - April 23, 2010
Go for the She, stay for the Him.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
At Sasquatch or in Bend?
At least if it were in Bend you could drink at Deschutes beforehand and blot out the preciousness.
pdb - April 23, 2010
I don't believe it is possible to fully blot out the preciousness.
Even if you blacked out, it would be hiding in your subconscious somewhere.
JY - April 23, 2010
Bend!
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
At least Bend can see a million volcanoes
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
B.o.B.
Airplanes Part 2 – This song came out last week, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it.
E2ESQUARE - April 23, 2010
I'm liking most of this album so far actually.
Strange because I wasn’t a huge BOB fan before.
Hopefulmsfan - April 23, 2010
Me too
I was really surprised at how much I liked the album even though its a very mainstream hip hop album. BoB just has a really fresh style that I cant stop listening to
E2ESQUARE - April 23, 2010
I'm looking forward to Manchester Orchestra/Thrice next week in Billings.
It’s going to be sick because it’s at a tiny, tiny little venue that only holds a couple hundred.
SethGrandpa - April 23, 2010
That would be an awesome show.
And the intimacy would make it even better.
Hopefulmsfan - April 23, 2010
Aaaaaand the tour just got canceled.
SethGrandpa - April 23, 2010
I am going to NOFX tonight.
Not sure if you’re punk fans, but I am. We don’t get bands of this ‘caliber’ in Billings very often. Ha! Hope its a good show. Oh, wait, I see Manchester Orchestra is in town…aaa funny.
Montucky - April 23, 2010
I've got tickets to see Lupe Fiasco at the Showbox on Mat 7th
I haven’t been to a hip-hop show before, so I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Excited though.
I Lick Squirrels - April 23, 2010
I'd imagine Lupe puts on a solid show. High-energy.
Standard hip-hop concert protocol: Nod your head a lot.
Teej - April 23, 2010
Embarrassing things you learn about yourself:
I just learned that I like Erik Hassle.
Jeff Sullivan - April 23, 2010
Phoenix at DAR Constitutional Hall
in DC on Monday night. I’ve great floor seats are few rows back and given how infrequently they tour, I think it should be a good show.
The following night at the Black Cat – Frightened Rabbit. Color me excited for those two evenings.
BHP - April 23, 2010
Phoenix should bring it.
They ruled hard when they were in Seattle last. Total pros.
AgainstKyle - April 23, 2010
So I've heard
Constitutional Hall is a pretty sweet venue, as well, so it has a ton of potential.
BHP - April 23, 2010
Thank God Its Friday
Friday Music Playlist:
Keep Their Heads Ringing – Dr. Dre
It Was A Good Day – Ice Cube
Fly Like A Bird – Andre Nickatina
and because Tuesday was 4/20,
Let Me Ride – Dr. Dre
Death Row, The Chronic, 1993 and forever
E2ESQUARE - April 23, 2010
So this is what I had stuck in my head before playing High Violet.
Cat Power – Moonshiner (traditional cover)
I had been talking about her recently with a friend, who found this particular live set of Metal Heart, which is one my favorites of hers.
JY - April 23, 2010
I feel like I keep rambling every time these threads come up...
but hey, The Tallest Man on Earth released a new album. I’m going to have to look into this one….
JY - April 23, 2010
Strangely enough, Kristian Matsson is only 5'4".
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
p.s. this isn't true
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
His voice really rubs me the wrong way, which is weird because I can tolerate Jay Mangum's voice
and John Darnielle’s voice.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
Dosh is coming to Portland (Mississippi Studios) on May 8
He’s the drummer for Andrew Bird but has a great solo act… mostly a combination of instrumental drum and rhodes-melody post-rock/experimental-ish sound. I really dig him and his new album is pretty great, and he does everything live and looped, by himself or with another person so it sounds and looks pretty neat.
Dosh myspace
ewakio - April 23, 2010
Tired of shitty new Modest Mouse?
Travel back in time with me to the good old days.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
It's not that it's shitty, it's just more hit or miss I'd say.
Mariner John - April 23, 2010
No, No One's First and You're Next is a pretty awful EP
shitty is the perfect way to describe new modest mouse
E2ESQUARE - April 23, 2010
I didn't dislike every song on that EP
I like The Whale Song and Guilty Cocker Spaniels. I wouldn’t call it shitty but it’s not up to their previous albums, sure.
Mariner John - April 23, 2010
During testing weeks,
when everyone is frantic, staring at their screens, stacks of energy drinks and empty Starbucks offerings close at hand, I play “Shit Luck” on repeat, and it makes me smile.
JY - April 23, 2010
Oh shit! New Pornographers have a new album coming out in less than two weeks!
!!!
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 23, 2010
Would it make some sense for these music threads to be FanPosts?
That way they wouldn’t get buried so quickly.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 26, 2010
Probably
