This week we wander along topics including 9/11 (no politics!), Arizona (no, really, no politics!), Jack Wilson, Jose Lopez, injury woes around the division and our DH situation.
Fascinating about the plate discipline statistics re: Ichiro...
Ichiro’s lower swing rate is almost entirely on out-of-zone pitches, even though the amount of pitches he sees outside of the zone has gone up. He has seen 52.4% of pitches in the zone over his career, and this season is at 43.2%. This is down from last three years by ~5.5%. His O-Contact rate has also jumped by about 4% over the last three years (and 2% over last year), and his BB% is the highest it’s been since 2002.
SSS theatre, sure, but it looks like pitchers are even more scared of Ichiro (pitching around him) and he’s even more disciplined. This could turn into a lot of fun.
Thank you Ottawa for Dany Heatley. I know Matthew and Jeff probably are going to ban me because they are bitter since the Heatley situation didnt end on the best of terms….but i love him and he he will have a monster series versus the red wings.
and im a big chris neal fan. when he was rumored to be traded to the sharks last year i was ecstatic. that being said….dany heatley still has a chance to score more goals…..crap now im definitely getting banned
after one good year, not even a full year, of being the line mate of Joe Thornton. He’s like Mike Sweeney batting after Ichiro hits a leadoff triple every at bat the entire season.
2 outs in the eight and runner on first. Oh yeah, 1 run lead as well. After the still very recent bullpen meltdowns, I think he was where he should have been.
I don't know, it really didn't look like that for me. The thing that got me was he makes no effort whatsoever to get at the ball. He just stands there. Whatever though I've been pretty happy with him at third overall.
He isn’t the quickest nor fleetest of foot (that ball was by him before he even reacted), but he has been getting the job done and even made a few very good plays. You really couldn’t have scripted a better transition thus far. Now if he would just get back to that whole ‘shooting for 50 walks this season’ mentality at the dish and get back to using the whole field like we saw in a few stretches last season.
I agree completely about black people and fried chicken
Seriously, I can not name a single person of any race that does not like fried chicken, that would be like making fun of black people for breathing air
Whenever you post on a topic, you post with every writer who's discussed that topic before.
Uh, this is awkward Jeff, but you might want to get tested….. I really had fun though, and you should call me, and in any event, treatment options are miles better than they were years ago.
I don't know why you include a segment for new listeners
just to scare them off thirty seconds later.
RunningFool - April 29, 2010
You talked about Jim Bowden,
Whose video had boobs as topic. I think that counts as talking about boob.
Trenchtown - April 29, 2010
Jim Bowden's video had stats as a topic.
Not boobs.
harkening - April 29, 2010
I have not listened to it yet.
But I really like the idea of posting it on the off day. So kudos.
CapSea - April 29, 2010
"Diet Beltre"
I like it.

Holy shit!
The Cruz bit made me go to Fangraphs…and Nelson has been worth 1.7 WAR this year in 93 plate appearances on a league minimum contract. Wow.
harkening - April 29, 2010
Unfortunately Kinsler will be back tomorrow night.
Kinsler to make season debut at Seattle
TrashiDawa - April 29, 2010

Thank you Ottawa for Dany Heatley. I know Matthew and Jeff probably are going to ban me because they are bitter since the Heatley situation didnt end on the best of terms….but i love him and he he will have a monster series versus the red wings.

Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
Though we do appreciate hockey talk here
please use proper capitalization when posting at LL.
Matthew - April 29, 2010
I apologize for my grammatical errors.
That being said, is there an issue with The Big Pavelski! as improper capitalization?
Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
I am also still bitter about you guys putting the GIF of Boyle's indiscretion.
Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
Lighten up
It’s funny now!
Jeff Sullivan - April 29, 2010
Sure it is funny now,
but when it happened I was not in the laughing kind of mood.
Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
Speaking of things that are funny,
how is Cheechoo working out for you?
Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
This is a thing that is not funny!
Jeff Sullivan - April 29, 2010
Boy do I ever regret being excited about getting Cheechoo in return.
Matthew - April 29, 2010
There's always next year for the Cheechoo train
Alexander Calloway - April 29, 2010
How is it that people think so highly of Cheechoo
after one good year, not even a full year, of being the line mate of Joe Thornton. He’s like Mike Sweeney batting after Ichiro hits a leadoff triple every at bat the entire season.
Mark Winkel - April 30, 2010
Nobody thinks highly of him
Matthew - April 30, 2010
Booooo.
Eyeball Kid - April 29, 2010
God I noticed Jose Lopez on that play too. Annoyed the shit out of me.
the other side - April 29, 2010
Lopez guarding the line?
2 outs in the eight and runner on first. Oh yeah, 1 run lead as well. After the still very recent bullpen meltdowns, I think he was where he should have been.

Jose has done quite well at third.

Trenchtown - April 29, 2010
Even vegetarians like fried chicken.
Though I might have told them it was non-meat product.
Matthew - April 29, 2010
Especially Ezell's.
I tried a recipe that was supposed to come close to it once and even though I screwed it up, it was right up there with the best chicken I’ve had.
hairofthedawg - April 29, 2010
Is the little player not working for anyone else?
Jeff Sullivan - April 29, 2010
I don't even see it
Alexander Calloway - April 29, 2010
Yeah, it's just not cooperating for some reason.
The direct link to the mp3 works fine though.
Matthew - April 29, 2010
For some reason, I have never been able to get the little player to work for me.
I’ve always used the direct link, and it’s worked great every time.
seattle_since_81 - April 29, 2010
Best tech quality of all of them so far I think
lemonverbena - April 29, 2010
Did you say 'Molten Bradley' at around 46 mins?
You may have stumbled upon a perfect nickname.
Eyeball Kid - April 29, 2010
Yes, yes I did!
Matthew - April 29, 2010

Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
You misheard, it was Busty Leone.
Janic - April 29, 2010
Is there a Mariner's porn name conversion post coming soon?
JAH - April 29, 2010
Even better
Mark Winkel - April 29, 2010
God damn it. There goes a post on sw str%.
Dave was right about you, Sullivan.
Technically, you can add Rob Johnson to Tui and Ichiro, fucking thowaway point in a podcast assholes.
I liked this podcast too. A lot. Thanks for the conflicted feelings.
marc w - April 29, 2010 via mobile
You can still write the post since like 50 people listen to these
Jeff Sullivan - April 29, 2010
(I don't know how many people actually listen to these and that would be fascinating information)
Jeff Sullivan - April 29, 2010
You could put a poll up on the next one maybe
Edgar for Pres - April 29, 2010
Yeah, but it feels dirty now.
marc w - April 29, 2010 via mobile
Why do you say this in a bad way?
the other side - April 29, 2010

I'm part of an elite club?
Gihyou - April 29, 2010
Griffey pulled a deep fly ball to Nelson Cruz in Texas.
I only remember because it was only a few feet from me and my brother. This has no real relevance.
Slow Country - April 29, 2010
Was that one of the ones he hit right on the screws, but flew out short of the warning track?
joof - April 29, 2010
Well that was an experience.
qrsouther - April 29, 2010
Why the Hell have I always pronounced it Bill Bavasi wrong
hcoguy - April 29, 2010
How have you been pronouncing it?
harkening - April 29, 2010
I'm willing to bet it was "ass" instead of "ace"
Brian Floyd - April 29, 2010
I'm not sure how to spell it phonetically.
Buh-vah-see? I guess.
hcoguy - April 29, 2010
You've been pronouncing like an Italian!
Speak like an American. Fuck distinct linguistic phonetics and cultural identifiers.
harkening - April 30, 2010
That's how I always prounounced it.
Benne - April 30, 2010
We failed in Vietnam and we failed with Griffey/Sweeney, our containment policy was belief system instead of brinksmanship =(
