Infield Depth
Our infield depth doesn’t look too good. Ahh… who cares. Fun starts tomorrow.
zeeehjee - April 4, 2010
Is the depth just Tui and Langerhans?
Alexander Calloway - April 4, 2010
Just Tuiasosopo
Janic - April 4, 2010
Mike Blowers should put up his projection numbers
Alexander Calloway - April 4, 2010
I thought Langerhans could play 1b?
w00tah - April 4, 2010
Baseball Reference does say he played 23 games at 1B in 2009.
Not that we were all concerned about our 1B depth though.
Janic - April 4, 2010
*In the minors
Janic - April 4, 2010
I'm not sure if this is crazy
But if Jack Wilson gets hurt we could switch Figgins to SS and then either leave Lopez at 3B and put Tui in at 2B or switch the two so that Tui is at 3B and Lopez is at 2B.
Edgar for Pres - April 4, 2010
I think Chone can play everywhere
So yes
Alexander Calloway - April 4, 2010
It's important to remember that Figgins signed at least in part because he was promised a permanent role.
That’s not to say he’d be unwilling to move to SS, but it is possible that he’d be unhappy to do so.
Aaron Campeau - April 4, 2010
I think Wilson getting hurt with Hannahan still unhealthy though may constitute an emergency situation.
I doubt Figgins would get too mad in that case, and it may be more productive than using Josh Wilson
BrettJMiller - April 4, 2010
If Ackley is ready to go at 2B next year I bet Figgins gets shifted to 3B
Actually having Figgins play a permanent role takes away a large part of his appeal.
Edgar for Pres - April 4, 2010
What
abender20 - April 4, 2010
Double what
abender20 - April 4, 2010
let's talk about 2011
a day before 2010 starts officially :)
fortyniners - April 4, 2010
I think it's more that he wants to know where he's playing every day.
He’d probably be fine with being switched in the off-season if it comes to that.
And I disagree that it takes away a large part of his appeal. A bit maybe, sure, but not a lot.
Aaron Campeau - April 4, 2010
Ok I can agree with that
Edgar for Pres - April 4, 2010
I don't think it's anything to worry about if it's just for a few games or a couple of weeks.
I think he’d be fine if he understood it was just to fill in for a while. If Wilson were to go down for a couple months, and they planned to use Figgins there for the whole time, that might be a different thing.
nathaniel dawson - April 4, 2010
3 DH's Nice!
arniegrape2k - April 4, 2010
DH doesn't quite fit, how about
XD – Ken Griffey Jr.
:D – Mike Sweeney
Janic - April 4, 2010
I think Sweeney can probably play 1B if it comes down to it.
This will probably happen when Kotchman needs a day off unless they shift Lopez to 1B and put Tui in.
Edgar for Pres - April 4, 2010
What does XD stand for?
Fett42 - April 4, 2010
A laughing face.
Janic - April 4, 2010
Also, Extreme Dude
Because Junior is probably going to hit 80 homers by June.
OceanBird - April 4, 2010
It's going to get really awkward in the club house if Griffey hits 81 though.
joof - April 4, 2010
Phew. At least Felix made the roster.
brayden04 - April 4, 2010
Roster looks decent to me,
just hope that Lee comes back real healthy and real soon!
Bart's Evil Twin - April 4, 2010
If someone gets hurt, I really hope it's not just a day-to-day thing because we're really going to need roster spots with three DHs on the roster
seattlebruin - April 4, 2010
So who goes away when Lee comes back?
JLProck - April 4, 2010
Fister
Matthew - April 4, 2010
Or depending on who doesn't play as good in their first couple starts?
Between Fister and Vargas
fortyniners - April 4, 2010
I doubt the front office is going to make this decision based on the sample of a couple of starts
Aaron Campeau - April 4, 2010
True
I just didn’t think that Vargas is way too much ahead of Fister in the front office eyes, so the first few starts may begin to sway the 50-50 decision a little bit
fortyniners - April 4, 2010
Perhaps yes, perhaps no
If one of them has a blazing first few starts while the other tanks, they may choose based on that just for the PR.
nathaniel dawson - April 4, 2010
They choose Mike Sweeney...
based on spring training.
harkening - April 4, 2010
I don't know that I believe that to be the case
Aaron Campeau - April 4, 2010
Clubhouse presence.
M'sFanatic - April 4, 2010
Do we know if Adam Moore locked up the starting catching spot?
Wilder. - April 4, 2010
If the Mariners care about offense and catching defense, yes
Alexander Calloway - April 4, 2010
When Hanahan comes off the DL, does Tui get shafted again like last year?
“Congratulations Tui you made the team, however you’ll only be here for about a week before you need to go back to Tacoma”
Scrupio - April 4, 2010
That's being shafted?
It’s the lot of younger players to get shuttled back and forth as they’re establishing themselves. I’d think he’d be glad he gets the opportunity to play in the majors for a while, if only for a couple weeks.
nathaniel dawson - April 4, 2010
Well I meant that Tui would feel shafted by this, which I could understand.
I really just see Tui as version 2 of Mike Morse with NW ties
Scrupio - April 4, 2010
Except with talent.
Mariner John - April 4, 2010
I really do not understand why people are so up in arms about what happens to Tui.
You know how he could make sure that he gets treated “fairly”?
Get better at baseball.
Jeff Nye - April 4, 2010
Well Hannahan is better
Jeff Sullivan - April 4, 2010
I might argue a bit about the bat, but Hannahan does beat Tui by a large margin with the glove
Scrupio - April 4, 2010
I don't totally see what people see in Tui's bat when they look at it right now
I see some potential in a couple years but right now I can’t imagine him hitting much in the majors.
Edgar for Pres - April 4, 2010
Maybe, but I think he could probably beat Hannahan's career .224/.311/.347
Scrupio - April 4, 2010
Yes, overall Hannahan is better
Jeff Sullivan - April 4, 2010
oh eric byrnes
hope you bounce back, and yet again bite the dbacks in the ass
sergey606 - April 4, 2010
Unless I'm missing something, no lefties in the bullpen?
That seems like a problem to me, but I honestly don’t know how big a deal it really is. Or is the value of the LOOGY overstated? I know that baseball traditionalists like to talk about the value of bringing in a lefty specialist in the late innings, but maybe it’s not actually that important? Or perhaps the M’s just couldn’t find someone to fill that role?
urchman - April 5, 2010
Would you rather have a good pitcher in the bullpen or a crappy lefty specialist?
Also, with only 11 pitchers on the roster, we simply don’t have the space to carry a guy who is going to pitch sporadically to only a few batters at a time
