I HOPE ALL TEN OF THE A'S FANS WENT HOME HAPPY!
I really do.
Slurvey - April 7, 2010
In the grand scheme of a season, this is the equivalent of losing one 3 game series in july.
These losses sucked, but we could easily come back and split tomorrow. It’s not like the Angels or Rangers put any distance between us anyways.
Rowsdower - April 7, 2010
Way to go, "pitching and defense" mantra. You really stuck it out today.
thehemogoblin - April 7, 2010
We should abandon it and just go for dingers!
Brian Floyd - April 7, 2010
I believe we established at FanGraphs on opening day:
The term is “dongers.”
philkid3 - April 8, 2010
Kurt Suzuki seems like the kind of guy I would enjoy being friends with.
Teej - April 7, 2010
I was thinking the same thing these last couple of days.
Seems like a good, decent guy, who’s talented and would be normal to be around.
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
Yep.
Hard to hate him.
Fearless Frog - April 7, 2010
Not for me.
I hate him.
the other side - April 7, 2010
I with you.
I can’t stand how he seems to tear down my emotional walls, and then skull fuck my feelings. I hate you Kurt.
mariseanerhawk - April 8, 2010
I hate him in that regard as a baseball player.
But he doesn’t invoke the feelings of fury I get with some other players.
Fearless Frog - April 8, 2010
I can't do it
The puka shells would bother me.
Brian Floyd - April 7, 2010
He gets a pass for being Hawaiian, I guess.
Teej - April 7, 2010
Personally, I'd love to sleep with Roger Clemens and Alfonso Soriano
If you can’t beat ’em, fuck ’em.
OceanBird - April 7, 2010
Interesting combination.
Tell me how that goes.
the other side - April 7, 2010
I don't think Roger the Rocket has moveable sperm anymore.
Johnny Slick - April 7, 2010
Is that why he had his trainer using linament on his testicles?
thehemogoblin - April 7, 2010
Seeing his face on the Win Expectency graph is like seeing Emmanuel Goldstein's face during the two minute's hate.
JAH - April 8, 2010
I wish he was our catcher.
Sec 108 - April 8, 2010
Kurt Suzuki .666 WPA
lailaihei - April 7, 2010
I sense a lot of games like this this year.
Is it appropriate to use the word this twice in sentence above. It would work if spoken.
These games could go either way, does luck regress?
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
Does luck regress
yes, that’s what regression means.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 8, 2010
Hopefully A's are enjoying this series.
Because M’s will win the rest of the series against A’s
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
54-108!
RunningFool - April 7, 2010
For the A's
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
Rob Johnson doesn't want to attempt to catch a Brandon League death splitter, he'd prefer to live
Opisgod - April 7, 2010
Is John Marzano available?
Johnny Slick - April 7, 2010
We had this guy named Adam.
He may be sore for a few days though.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Will he be able to reproduce?
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
Well....
There’s always cloning.
the other side - April 7, 2010
That guy couldn't catch smallpox with a blanket.
thehemogoblin - April 7, 2010
So he's a perfect Rob Johnson replacement!
harkening - April 7, 2010
Rob Johnson couldn't catch a cold.
Whoopie, he’s durable, but so is Yuni according to Joe Posnanski, and he thinks that’s a plus.
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
He's durable because he's 50% iron and plastic.
harkening - April 7, 2010
You forgot the laser eyes.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Wow. Yuni's durable is all natural.
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
You can't dent/scratch/pull fat.
thehemogoblin - April 7, 2010
Points for you/yuni.
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
As I understand it, scar tissue is actually much tougher than the flesh it replaces.
Each surgery is more durability, and retinal scarring, woo!
harkening - April 7, 2010
It seems like we could help Jack Wilson with this somehow.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Joe Posnanski only thought that because he remembered he had to say one positive thing about all players
and find some reason that they were in the Major Leagues
seattlebruin - April 8, 2010
At least we're not starting out flat like the Astros.
ThundaPC - April 7, 2010
I think Brett Myers pitched above my expectation
But their pen is worse than ours. That never helps a team to win a ball game
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
I am incredibly annoyed that the A's managed to out-annoy us tonight.
Benne - April 7, 2010
How the Mariners could be worse off than having Rob Johnson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Bergen_%28baseball%29
Johnny Slick - April 7, 2010
Well it sounds like he could catch....
the other side - April 7, 2010
"Bergen also led the league's catchers with 24 errors and 38 passed balls."
niceguysfinishlast - April 7, 2010
But he was considered a "superior defensive catcher."
I think we might be able to isolate this as catcher expecations in the era. Perhaps coaching could fix it.
harkening - April 7, 2010
Plus his death glares would have a entirely new meaning.
He could replace Bradley as the most interesting Mariner.
the other side - April 7, 2010
He had over 300 games played.
I think he is much better than Rob Johnson.
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
"As a catcher, Martin Bergen was the best the world ever produced. No man acted with more natural grace as a ballplayer..."
Kinda getting mixed signals.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Can we find a piece of DNA of him?
I would rather have him behind the plate.
Ef the yankees - April 7, 2010
Explain to me why Rob Johnson killing himself would be a bad thing for the Mariners
Aaron Campeau - April 7, 2010
One less person for us to make fun of?
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
Thats a reach.
We would still have Byrnes.
the other side - April 7, 2010
That's a hit to a sizeable minority of the fanbase (here).
But I don’t see how it hurts the organization. Maybe all the counselors the FO would bring would make Bradley and Snell fart rainbows.
harkening - April 7, 2010
But its a really awesome minority of the fanbase.
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
Now that would be a bad thing.
Bradley is way too much fun as he is.
the other side - April 7, 2010
I'm thinking farting rainbows would give him the power of a Care Bear Stare.
And then he could just blast people.
harkening - April 7, 2010
I withdraw my statement.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Marty Bergen also axed his wife and daughter.
And freaked out the entire team the season before by being a paranoid schizophrenic (pretty sure that wasn’t a diagnosed illness at the time but crazy is crazy). And led the league in passed balls with 38. 38! Even Rob Johnson tops out at what? 5 a year?
Johnny Slick - April 7, 2010
Yu should talk to bill
Opisgod - April 7, 2010
my keyboard be dead, i should talk to that tech nerd someday
Opisgod - April 7, 2010
9 last year.
And it wasn’t even a full season. And that’s not counting “wild pitches.” Also, his CS% was 31%, which is kinda terrible.
harkening - April 7, 2010
Do they sell Rob Johnson jerseys in the team shop up there in Seattle?
Because I would be interested in burning one for a YouTube video.
mariseanerhawk - April 8, 2010
Oh Hyphen, you're still awesome
RRS’ twitter
Brian Floyd - April 7, 2010
Yep just ignore that big L.
They are meaningless anyway.
the other side - April 7, 2010
That's exactly what he's saying
good job.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 8, 2010
Rec'd for the twitter quote.
If it all goes wrong, Hyphen’s gonna make it all worth it.
harkening - April 7, 2010
RRS with the voice of reason.
I still love you dude, even if you sucked tonight.
Benne - April 7, 2010
It would sure be nice if, you know, the 3 balls in Kurt Suzuki's final AB were actually called strikes.
I cannot remember a series with worse ball and strike calls. It’s fucking ridiculous.
SethGrandpa - April 7, 2010
At this point I have no expectations for the umps actually getting calls right.
Maybe when Selig dies we can get those robots.
the other side - April 7, 2010
I don't expect them to get EVERY call right.
But I’d like them to not miss 1-3 calls seemingly every AB.
SethGrandpa - April 7, 2010
Totally agree.
Without doing +1 or “this” or anything else that is objectionable. I shall rec this comment.
TrustBaseball - April 7, 2010
.
lemonverbena - April 7, 2010
I want to flag this comment for making me angry.
harkening - April 7, 2010
Yuck.
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
Thank you for this.
SethGrandpa - April 8, 2010
With calls this borderline it's hard to get really upset, I think
Jeff Sullivan - April 8, 2010
This is close?
Opisgod - April 8, 2010
If I'm reading this right
There are two pitches called “balls” in the center of the zone, and there’s a pitch in the right hander’s batters box what was called a “strike”.
The fuck?
Two Rs and Two Ls - April 8, 2010
This has been happening all series.
There have been a few pitches right down the middle that have been called balls.
Bendy things are confusing!
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 8, 2010
fastballs
Opisgod - April 8, 2010
This is okay so long as it is consistent throughout the game
Bearskin Rugburn - April 8, 2010
Why the hell does it go up to Suzuki's armpits while it normalizes the strike zone for everyone else?
I watched the game on Gameday, too, and Suzuki’s was the only zone that looked anything like this. I think it may be distorting the pitch f/x relativized (or whatever you call it) location on the chart Opisgod showed us.
Decatur - April 8, 2010
Defensive Replacement
Seems to me that in a situation when we are in the 9th inning and beyond and we are the visiting team, it makes more sense to put in a defensive replacement into LF. If we’re the home team, I would have stuck with Bradley because he has the better bat, but I sure would have liked to have seen Langerhans or Byrnes in there.
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
I figured Langerhans was going into LF after he PH'd for Johnson.
And we’d put Sweeney in the DH slot for Bradley. I mean, I know Sweeney DH’ing is fucking miserable, but it was either him, Byrnes or Tui, and Tui’s our emergency catcher and general utility guy. And Byrnes, well…Byrnes is Byrnes.
harkening - April 7, 2010
That was definitely a little on the weird side. Wakamatsu is off his game early this year.
thehemogoblin - April 7, 2010
Uh that doesn't work
Griffey was the DH. So if Langerhans goes to left, Bradley is gone, Johnson is gone, Moore is still in the game at C. You can replace Griffey with Sweeney if you want but that has nothing to do with Langerman pinch hitting. Unless I’m drunk.
appleshampoo - April 7, 2010
Yes, that is a valid point.
I was half-following the game because I was out and the place I was at didn’t turn it on the TV (even though I asked them to), and I could only glance at Gameday on my phone every so often.
Fuck.
harkening - April 7, 2010
There seems to be a very fine line between hilariously annoying and insanely boring
Dewey N - April 7, 2010
It's not really a fine line. It's actually +/- 2 runs.
Hilariously annoying=Mariners win.
Insanely boring=Mariners lose.
harkening - April 7, 2010
At what point...
do we wonder if we just wasted 3 hours of our eveinings?
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
When the game is tied two-two in the bottom of the 7th and Wak brings in Sean White.
harkening - April 7, 2010
Or better yet. When Wak brings in Sean White.
the other side - April 7, 2010
Either at that moment,
or when whatever SB Nation server hosting LL crashes.
harkening - April 7, 2010
Yeah...
I know its early and we haven’t played enough games to make fair judgement, but I’m probably going to be pretty worried every time we turn one over to the bullpen. At least for a little while.
zeeehjee - April 7, 2010
Were you alive in 2008
Aaron Campeau - April 7, 2010
2008 was a treasure
Dewey N - April 8, 2010
The Inca Ruins in Peru are now considered a "national treasure".
Well put.
TrustBaseball - April 8, 2010
Not a surprise, but if Fister doesn't pitch well tomorrow the six man pen is dead.
Baker:
drblacknwhite - April 7, 2010
Watch us get rid of someone more useful than Sweeney
Gihyou - April 7, 2010
There's a 13 in 14 chance of this happening.
harkening - April 8, 2010
Griffey down to Triple A???
Ofcourse not, that would hurt ticket sales. They will probably do something stupid like send down Langerhans…
mariseanerhawk - April 8, 2010
MLB The Show him and send him straight to AA.
joof - April 8, 2010
They're not sending anyone down
the only players with options left aren’t going anywhere
seattlebruin - April 8, 2010
There's absolutely no way that could possibly happen.
Teej - April 8, 2010
Bye bye Sweendogg
Poochie - April 8, 2010
Nice call idiot
Robert - April 8, 2010
Ichiro's error
From where I was sitting (at the bar), it looked like the run was going to score on that ball even if Ichiro fielded the ball cleanly. Curious what the rest of you think?
appleshampoo - April 7, 2010
I was sitting in front of my computer and it looked like the run was going to score
whether he fielded it cleanly or not.
TrustBaseball - April 8, 2010
I think you are forgetting the strength of the Asian Man's arm...
While I think he had a good chance of still scoring, Ichiro shouldn’t have taken today to play soccer (football for someone out there I’m sure) in right field. I don’t mean to nit-pick but for a defense postured team, 3 errors in as many games on top of the lovely catching skills of Rob are hurting us.
mariseanerhawk - April 8, 2010
Dude, Asian Man is not the preferred nomenclature.
coolguyrob - April 8, 2010
Ichiro is Asian?
What is this?
OceanBird - April 8, 2010
Hawaiian.
seattlesundevil - April 8, 2010
Ichiro is Aslan
Bearskin Rugburn - April 8, 2010
So you are saying he's lying?
seattlebruin - April 8, 2010
Yeah, he has a lot of pride.
JAH - April 8, 2010
Nah, I don't think the run scores if he doesn't boot it
Doubt they even would have sent him with 1 out.
Zack - April 8, 2010
I'll always be a big fan of Raja Davis
We went to HS together and shared the same locker room (he was a senior on varsity and I was playing freshman ball at the time). He never struck me as the most talented on a pretty decent team and at least one other player from that squad got thrown a very late draft pick out of high school (never ended up playing due to injury). My understanding is that Raja really took a big step forward at UConn-AP). It was fun following Davis through the minors ( I went to an Altoona Curve game a few years back just to catch him play) but he’s been much more successful at the big league level than I ever thought he would be. He was always a very nice person (freshman players got alot of crap from JV and varsity – as they should) and now hes getting some of the success and hopefully money he deserves.
