By designating him for assignment they have 10 days to do one of the following- Release, trade, or waiver him. So they can’t sign him back to the Minors? After they designate him, he’s pretty much gone?

Not necessarily

We can assign him to the minors, but he needs to pass through waivers first. If no other teams claim him, we can then keep him in the minors.

Junior thinks he can still play, and has shown absolutely nothing to support that opinion. Sweeney thinks he can still play, and he busted his ass and kicked the fuck out of the entire Cactus League. As irrelevant as ST stats are, there seems to a serious difference in effort being put out by Grandpas 1 and 2.

Why don't we give Sweeney a chance to hit?

This isn't to say that Sweeney should be on the team either.

I’d rather both of them were gone and Dye or Delgado, or christ, even Sheffield in their place. I just think that out of the two, Sweeney seems willing to earn his job, and Junior seems happy with cashing his $2.35MM.

If Dye can play 1B in a pinch, he’d be pretty ideal. Spell Kotchman, get a few ABs against LHPs at the DH spot as well.

trying to take a step back, how big a deal is it that our 5th outfielder was kicked to the curb? How many wins could we have expected him to contribute over Sweeney? I mean, even if someone gets injured, we still have Saunders in Tacoma.

Even if you believe that Langerhans is a .311 wOBA, Langerhans-> left and Bradley to DH is 13 runs.

This is a seperate issue that is much more worrisome.

It's not really separate though, total value from the roster spot is what counts

if Griffey’s gonna get 450 PA at DH either way, I can’t imagine the marginal difference between Langerhans/Sweeney is huge. That Griffey is going to get those appearances is the real issue.

So what you guys are trying to say is that we won't be going to the world series correct?

Utilize his large spring as a trade incentive. Give the Padres him and some one else for Adrian Gonzalez. The Padres have been entertaining offers, and Adrian satisfies both our defense posture and our power need. Just a thought though. Maybe in a perfect world, but not this one.
