Jack Wilson placed on DL as expected, Tui recalled
Jack's stay on the DL will be retroactive to May 6th, meaning he'll be eligible to return against San Diego on May 21st. This is all made possible by the fact that Josh Wilson's playing like a big boy. Josh won't keep slugging .650, or .500, or .400, but then it's not like Jack has looked at his best in the early going, so the team doesn't lose a whole lot. And Tui will provide some flexibility in the meantime, kind of, in that he isn't literally a tree stump. I don't think a Major League Baseball team would call up a player who is literally a tree stump. Though, why a tree stump would have made it into an organization in the first place is a wonder indeed.

Exciting!
Poochie - May 12, 2010
We have two tree stumps!
calim - May 12, 2010
They would totally allow a tree stump
If it built a baseball stadium and was a reason that the team didn’t relocate to another city.
zeeehjee - May 12, 2010
Did you know tree stumps need sleep, too?
calim - May 12, 2010
tree stumps are cozy and comforting. they provide you a place to sit on a warm summer day and , they are shelter for little critters, and they always good for a chuckle or two.
… isn’t that worth it?
Gekko Mojo - May 12, 2010
Because it's possible that the tree stump
would still have an OBP of .290 or so?
TheBishop - May 12, 2010
Probably as a publicity stump.
Fin - May 12, 2010
"I don't think a Major League Baseball team would call up a player who is literally a tree stump."
Richie Sexson stands as living proof that you are wrong.
Matt Erickson - May 12, 2010
He was about 85% of a tree actually
too tall to be just a stump.
pdb - May 12, 2010
He'd only been topped.
msb - May 12, 2010
You mean there will actually be...
a position player on the bench when the game starts, who would actually be available to put on a glove and take the field if called upon?
I didn’t know that was allowed.
Paul AB - May 12, 2010
Mike Sweeney challenges your notion of bench players
with a bare-knuckled brawl behind the jungle gym at 3pm.
ThomasG - May 12, 2010
Sweeney vs Griffey in a DFA on a pole match!
Stormton - May 12, 2010
Wouldn't you ideally want to lose that match if you were one of them?
seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010
Doesn't this just set the table for Griff and Sween to stay on the roster when Bradley comes back?
calim - May 12, 2010
Not sure I'm following you.
Bradley and Wilson will be coming back. Tui will be sent down for one of them, but when the other comes back is when the decision concerning any other player will have to be made.
seattle_since_81 - May 12, 2010
Guess I was just thinking Bradley will come back first
Thereby delaying the Griff-Sweeney decision by another week or so, thereby keeping our roster inflexible and tree-stumpy.
calim - May 12, 2010
Hopefully Tui got some of whatever they put in the water in Tacoma.
the other side - May 12, 2010
No kidding.
The “Call-Up Boys” sure seem to be swinging it.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Considering it's Tacoma
Probably drugs
Matt Erickson - May 12, 2010
99% of the people I've met that say things like this about Tacoma have never been to Tacoma or at most have driven by it on the freeway and maybe stopped for gas.
Aaron Campeau - May 12, 2010
Hilltop is kind of scary.
Mariner John - May 12, 2010
Hilltop was much scarier about 15 years ago.
It just still carries the reputation. Not that it’s a great neighborhood, but it’s better than it was.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Gentrification!
Ballard Erik - May 12, 2010 via mobile
Parts of it are, but they're not any worse than, oh, 12th and Jefferson let's say
Aaron Campeau - May 12, 2010
Not any worse that certain areas of Seattle, or Everett, or, or, or.....
Tacoma is a pretty hardcore town for the most part, but I’ve personally never had any more problems there than I have in any other city.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
12th and Jeff?
Damn Seattle U students!
harkening - May 12, 2010
hey now
pdb - May 12, 2010
I used to buy beer there until a man solicted his "wife" for sex
and every time a bum would ask me for a beer. That AM/PM is sketchy.
The sex, however, was fantastic.
LonelyintheBleachers - May 12, 2010
I was not serious.
I’d imagine where I live now is a good comparison, as you said.
Mariner John - May 12, 2010
Thats because its kinda funny.
rbr07 - May 12, 2010
Not especially
Aaron Campeau - May 12, 2010
Tacoma smells funny
Aly Edge - May 12, 2010
I've heard it's because of the paper industry.
You don’t need signs to tell you you’re about to drive past Tacoma; the scent is unmistakable.
Rollo Tomasi - May 12, 2010
The Tacoma aroma
d0nkey - May 12, 2010
Easy big fella.
Tacoma once was the murder capital of the USA. A title also once held by Yakima. Both cities have earned some of the derision they receive.
Sec 108 - May 12, 2010
Yakima is goddamn scary. They have miners burgers though so its totally worth the risk.
the other side - May 12, 2010
Let's stay on topic please!
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
So if Josh Wilson keeps hitting like this,
how long do you think Jack’s hamstring continues to be “problematic”?
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Jack is still the better player anyway
They just want to be extra cautious.
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
Did he actually do something to it or just came up sore?
the other side - May 12, 2010
Hurt it legging out a bunt
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
Well it's not like this was unexpected.
I guess I’d rather miss him early that late when we need his defense.
the other side - May 12, 2010
Extremely SSS,
but it sure looks like Josh has dounf something with the bat this year, and he’s no slouch with the glove. Given Jack’s ongoing injury problems (not from a small sample size), there’s a part of me that wonders if we wouldn’t be better off giving Josh an extended look.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Wow.
“dounf”? How did I do that? Should be “found something with the bat”. Sorry.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Well, Josh will get another week and a half
He’s never really hit anywhere, though, and he’s not the defender that Jack usually is, so the odds are long that we actually have something here.
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
I understand.
He’s also not a young kid for just coming up. Kind of a AAAA player. But I always wonder if some of those guys will finally “click” and turn into something if they were just given the chance.
Wishful thinking I know.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
We all hope for it
It’s just important to remember that it’s unlikely.
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
Okay so according to Baker, Jack's the one being extra cautious
The DL stint was his idea.
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
But Tacoma is scary
I live in South Tacoma on the corner of Drive-By Avenue and Gangbanger Boulevard.
Ryan Divish - May 12, 2010
I just love that you can eat at a swanky restaurant/bar in what was basically a war zone when I was growing up.
McKinley/south will change too.
marc w - May 12, 2010
I worked on S. Tacoma Way.
And I also did a lot of B2B sales throughout the city. Believe me, I’ve spent plenty of time in Tacoma.
Matt Erickson - May 12, 2010
Tui Interface!
ThomasG - May 12, 2010

theslothking - May 12, 2010
Tui gets called up
And boots Griffey from the lineup.
ThundaPC - May 12, 2010
There is a wonderful lack of hugs in that lineup
xero3k - May 12, 2010
Lopez at DH, Tui at 3rd.
Poor Hyphen.
Rollo Tomasi - May 12, 2010
Unless I'm reading that wrong, Tui is a SS, j. Wilson is at 3B.
I don’t get it.
Kermit. - May 12, 2010
You're reading that wrong.
andrewgolfsalot - May 12, 2010
6 is SS, 5 is 3B
So yeah, you’re reading it wrong.
Jeff Nye - May 12, 2010
I do not understand this
Are they “resting” Lopez? Because the drop from Lopez to Tui defense is shaped like a cliff and has pointy rocks at the bottom.
Drew_D - May 12, 2010
Pseudo-offday probably
xero3k - May 12, 2010
I gather the thought is that Lopie needs a brain rest day. He's aiming towards the wrong field every time at bat.
msb - May 12, 2010
Never thought I'd read that there is a dropoff from Lopez's defense.
I’m happy it’s true.
Matt Erickson - May 12, 2010
Looked like a 6 to me, I can barely read that. Thanks for the correction
Kermit. - May 12, 2010
Oh look no Guti
Yeah this should turn out great.
Karma Police - May 12, 2010
Ah balls
I didn’t even notice that. Talk about torpedoing Hyphen’s chances of sticking when Bedard returns.
Drew_D - May 12, 2010
Could be ugly.
the other side - May 12, 2010
Langerhans is capable of holding the fort at CF.
ThundaPC - May 12, 2010
So it's Langer at CF, and Saunders in LF?
I’m okay with that. Guti deserves a day off, and Lopez could definitely use some time to sit down and think about a few things. Although this does feel a bit like one of those “we’ll probably lose anyway, might as well rest who we can” type of games.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
Personally, I'd rather have Saunders in CF and Langerhans in LF, but the difference is probably minimal.
marc w - May 12, 2010
Right now I like Saunders staying at one spot.
He’s young and on a roll right now, and I wouldn’t want to mess with that. But as a pure CF? I’m not sure. But I trust Langerhans out there for a game.
Thingray - May 12, 2010
It's just one game, but the idea of Saunders as regular LF'er is nice.
Kermit. - May 12, 2010
Absolutely! Especially if this streak is somewhat sustainable..
Obviously not at the same clip, but he is at least making decent amounts of hard contact.
seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010
He's played everywhere in Tacoma, including a few games in CF early on
I think it’s always advisable to have players capable of playing multiple positions. I don’t buy the idea that it’d mess with his hitting to play CF every now and then, and in any event, Saunders is the guy who’s going to be on the team in 2-3 years, so I’m more interested in his development in CF than Langerhans.
marc w - May 12, 2010
Josh Wilson has 5 walks in 6 games and Jack Wilson has 1 walk in 26 games.
For the time being, take your time Jack.
Kenny Knows Sports - May 12, 2010
And Tui in the lineup to boot!
Mariner Melee - May 12, 2010
Jack Wilson is Mr. Delicate
With how often he’s got a “hammy” acting up, you would think Jack Wilson was the survivor of a tragic jogging accident. He’s also a bit of a pussy.
E2ESQUARE - May 12, 2010
What?
BrianL - May 12, 2010
Yes he should really go out and play through injury, limiting his range and risking doing further damage and being out for longer.
Christ almighty.
Aaron Campeau - May 12, 2010
Or we could just not employ such fragile athletes
It doesn’t matter that Wilson can pull a Jeter if hes on the bench. Baseball players get hurt, I get it. Jack Wilson seriously injures himself running to first on a groundout half the time, thats annoying. He could alteast pull a Byrnes and hurt himself on a spectacularly unnecessary play.
E2ESQUARE - May 12, 2010
His fragility is why we have him.
Aaron Campeau - May 12, 2010
Pull a Jeter? ReallY?
Brian Floyd - May 12, 2010
What does Pull A Jeter mean?
seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010

pdb - May 12, 2010
I don't know how to say this nicely but jesus that was a dumb thing to say

seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010
These aren't new people

This is part of the trade off.

Oh Jesus Lord it's Johnny Slick

seattlebruin - May 12, 2010
I think what you meant to say
Its frustrating that Jack Wilson is always hurt. His value to the team would be much higher if his hamstring wasn’t always acting up.
Edgar for Pres - May 12, 2010
Posted lineup
Where is the lineup posted that everyone is commenting on? Thanks
A Steamy Day in Cleveland - May 12, 2010
Here.
Lineup
SethGrandpa - May 12, 2010
Is Langerhans better in CF than Ichiro?
Coach Owens - May 12, 2010
Doesn't look like it, though Langerhans' is SSS.
Coach Owens - May 12, 2010
That sure is an intimidating 3-4-5.
houseofprime - May 12, 2010
Well it's got Lopez, so it's not completely punchless
seattlebruin - May 12, 2010
Why oh WHY is Sweeney not in the lineup today?
seattlebruin - May 12, 2010
Practicing his MMA skills.
Brian Floyd - May 12, 2010
Bear hugs?
ThomasG - May 12, 2010
Why is Franklin sitting?
Our best hitter sitting out makes no sense right now.
houseofprime - May 12, 2010
Yes, they're all robots
They can play every single day.
Brian Floyd - May 12, 2010
Well I thought Guti was a sex robot.
houseofprime - May 12, 2010
GutiBot!

9:35am game tomorrow

No no no no
the correct answer is “because he’s a pussy”. Have you learned NOTHING from this site?
pdb - May 12, 2010
Apparently
Matthew - May 12, 2010
Whatever.
Danielle Lawrie pitches like every fucking game.
TheBishop - May 12, 2010
Someone needs to tell Wak you don't get degree of difficulty points for putting subpar hitters in the middle of the order.
God forbid you ride the hot bats of Langerhans, Wilson, and Saunders.
SethGrandpa - May 12, 2010
Wak's attempting the low-level challenge approach.
ThomasG - May 12, 2010
Feels bad for Baltimore, clearly!
seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010
"What's the worst lineup I can field that will still result in a win??"
Cantu Easley Winn - May 12, 2010
Oh Baltimore...we're just fucking with you at this point.
SethGrandpa - May 12, 2010
I was just looking at the two Wilsons' stats to compare the two and was shocked by one thing
Jack Wilson hit 12 HR in 2007. How the heck did this ever happen? I don’t think that will ever happen again.
Edgar for Pres - May 12, 2010
NL.
seattlesundevil - May 12, 2010
The fences are still about the same distance
Jack Wilson is one of those players who I doubt can hit a HR in batting practice.
Edgar for Pres - May 12, 2010
Kinda like Nash Dunking during warmups
Not gonna happen
Fat Ichiro - May 12, 2010
I have added nothing all day. I am self banishing
Fat Ichiro - May 12, 2010
Unlike Griffey and Sweeney though, when the tree stump inevitably flopped, it could be used to make bats.
Also the tree stump would never threaten to fight other team mates looks at Mike Sweeney; even if it did though, it would probably win. Punching and kicking tree stumps hurts.
hiskeyd - May 12, 2010
Wak apparently suggested that the team may be playing Tui at third, Lopez at DH for a while.
BrianL - May 12, 2010
Who needs defense on that side of the infield anyways?
BrianL - May 12, 2010
I doubt it
Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
That might be the straw that breaks my back if he does.
Matthew - May 12, 2010
What will you do?
I am not being smart ass, I want to know.
Mariner Melee - May 12, 2010
Write about how stupid it is.
It’s not like I have a lot of actionable options here
Matthew - May 12, 2010

Jeff Sullivan - May 12, 2010
Kick ass!
Dewey N - May 12, 2010
God it would be like moving Guti to LF so Saunders could play center
seattlebruin - May 12, 2010
