I’d argue you probably need a different field manager. His job is to understand which players are suited to which roles and use them appropriately in game.
My assessment of him, though, is well into the Hargrove/Riggleman range of “meh” compared to last year- has some good points, but does enough obviously second-guessable stuff that I don’t think he’s the kind of manager that IMPROVES his team. Basically, he ends up being a non-factor.
Without looking at advanced stats closely, it's really, really hard to tell that Sean White is a much worse pitcher than his results over the past year+
It’s the job of the front office’s statistics team to figure this out and for Jack Z to encourage Wak to chance the usage pattern.
Besides, the options in the bullpen without Lowe were Kelley, who has looked good but is still prone to the home run, and Aardsma, who would have probably been the best choice. However, it’s unrealistic to expect a manager today to use his closer in that situation without alot of prodding/encouragement from the front office. That’s why I believe the failure of responsibility rests with the front office as much as Wak for his poor managing decisions – he needs explanations, support, and encouragement from the front office so he can explain how these unconventional decisions help the team win to his players and to the fans (the front office needs to explain it to the media, fans, and players too). The front office isn’t being as bold, hands-on, and forward-thinking as it needs to be.

I'm a big Morrow fan. And I do not now, nor have I ever, liked the trade.
With that said, League is a fucking awesome relief pitcher. Morrow is gone. I have accepted that. Now I want League to produce to his amazing talent level.
Morrow made me happy. League makes me happy in other ways. He is not a sore spot. He is awesome on this team.

My assessment of him, though, is well into the Hargrove/Riggleman range of “meh” compared to last year- has some good points, but does enough obviously second-guessable stuff that I don’t think he’s the kind of manager that IMPROVES his team. Basically, he ends up being a non-factor.

Without looking at advanced stats closely, it's really, really hard to tell that Sean White is a much worse pitcher than his results over the past year+
It’s the job of the front office’s statistics team to figure this out and for Jack Z to encourage Wak to chance the usage pattern.
Besides, the options in the bullpen without Lowe were Kelley, who has looked good but is still prone to the home run, and Aardsma, who would have probably been the best choice. However, it’s unrealistic to expect a manager today to use his closer in that situation without alot of prodding/encouragement from the front office. That’s why I believe the failure of responsibility rests with the front office as much as Wak for his poor managing decisions – he needs explanations, support, and encouragement from the front office so he can explain how these unconventional decisions help the team win to his players and to the fans (the front office needs to explain it to the media, fans, and players too). The front office isn’t being as bold, hands-on, and forward-thinking as it needs to be.
