That boat looks like it can still be saved :(
MFAN - May 19, 2010
Its full of dead bodies
There is nothing to save
Edgar for Pres - May 19, 2010
Biggest suckfest: Wak, -99.9%
Coach Owens - May 19, 2010
What absurd thing did he do this game that I missed?
Not pinch hitting Saunders / Langerhans for Sweeney? That’s not much to bitch about at this point.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Sweeney in the four hole isn't efficient.
thehemogoblin - May 19, 2010
How 'bout STARTING SWEENEY!
harkening - May 19, 2010
Sweeney vs. a lefty is precisely what the platoon is for, though.
Yeah, four hole, sure, but that’s not enough to knock Wakamatsu’s dick in the dirt.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
The fact that we have a DH platoon when we have fucking Milton Bradley is entirely Wak's fault.
harkening - May 19, 2010
Okay, but does that sink the Mariners for this particular game as Coach's original statement implies?
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Also pinch-hitting Griffey instead of Langerhans/Saunders
He’s absolutely horrible at using the bench this year
Coach Owens - May 19, 2010
It's like he got replaced with a Evil Lookalike.
JAH - May 19, 2010
Fett? Gif?
JY - May 19, 2010
I figured Langerhans was still having problems with his elbow.
Saunders, sure, but this is what Griffey is for now: pinch hitting. I’m guessing the problem would have been if the game got tied for extras. Tui would have had to flip to short stop, Langerhans to first. Or something.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
The fact that you're okay with the prospect of Tui flipping to short is just...
Yeah…
harkening - May 19, 2010
I'm not "okay" with it.
Are you implying you’d have preferred Josh Wilson to bat there so we would have a short stop who isn’t completely useless?
The roster construction is not Wak’s fault.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Josh Wilson should have hit there because he's a better hitter than Griffey.
Aaron Campeau - May 19, 2010
Hannahan's logging time at short!
It’s a matter of time, right? You guys?
JY - May 19, 2010
Believe me, I will be happy to have him back.
Or someone else who can play short along with enough other middle infield positions to justify their place on the roster.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
It's sad that we really don't have anyone more capable with Jack Wilson out and Josh playing short.
Unless you want to bring up Ramon Vazquez or Chris Woodward in which case I would have to remind you that this ain’t 2002.
JY - May 19, 2010
No. I've been on board with ideas to bring in outside help.
The depth is not good and we haven’t had a decent short stop prospect in development for a while.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Eh, Triunfel?
He’s still playing and not horrible at it at the moment, not that I’d want to bring him up right now. Otherwise, all our capable middle infielders of the past five years have somehow ended up in Cleveland. And one of our outfielders. Damnit, I’ve made myself sad again.
JY - May 19, 2010
I, like a lot of others, don't immediatley consider Triunfel for the reasons JohBBT mentioned in his post.
And I fully admit it’s a bad position to take. But, still, Triunfel’s not nearly ready.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
I didn't catch all that when he first posted it.
Yeah, Triunfel is pretty much stuck there due to the presence of Liddi and Ackley on either side of him, but he’s been about average for the league at the position. The team could play him out there for the first few years, bat willing, and then move him. But Jon said all that already. So yeah!
JY - May 19, 2010
I'm still big on Triunfel. I so badly want a new home grown talent to succeed.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
I am recently terrified that Triunfel is Jose Lopez v 2.0
JY - May 19, 2010
We should move him to first.
The corner on the opposite side of the infield has been awesome for Loafie.
harkening - May 19, 2010
So he's going to be the best player who ever lived?
joof - May 19, 2010
Maybe!
Age 18 seasons:
Triunfel (HD): 108 G, 436 AB, 75 R, 125 H, 20 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR, 49 RBI, 30 SB, 9 CS, 52/30 K/BB, .287/.336/.406
Lopez (San B): 123 G, 522 AB, 82 R, 169 H, 39 2B, 5 3B, 8 HR, 60 RBI, 31 SB, 13 CS, 45/27 K/BB, .324/.360/.464
JY - May 19, 2010
What happened to 30-steal Lopez?
thehemogoblin - May 19, 2010
American food.
Mariner John - May 19, 2010
He went to Applebee's with Amazing Range Betancourt.
harkening - May 19, 2010
The same thing that's going to happen to 30 steal Triunfel.
Dudes do not generally stay the same size as they were at eighteen.
JY - May 19, 2010
Also, pitchers with no idea how to hold runners on
also evidence that Jose Lopez is a reasonably smart baseball player stuck in the mold of doing one really stupid thing (swinging at everything)
seattlebruin - May 19, 2010
I read up to "stuck in the"
before your comment jumped to the next line and felt sure I was going to read a comment about his comical Pillsbury Doughboy body.
harkening - May 19, 2010
What happened to 1.667 K:BB ratio Lopez?
The majors man. The majors can change you.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
He's getting 50 walks this year.
harkening - May 19, 2010
Dude I know! 50! That's like, halfway to 100!
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Yeah, Sammy Sosa used to be black.
JY - May 19, 2010
You didn't see what I saw, man.
Coach Owens - May 19, 2010
It was like, zooooom.
Coach Owens - May 19, 2010
I can see that.
But I don’t think Lopez had nearly as many scouts drooling over his tools. I’m pretty sure Detect-O-Vision overhyped Lopez to the point of absurdity.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Doc also hyped Betancourt from what I remember.
But it’s also in the presentation. If you look at what he said, it was usually “20-30% stardom” in the fine print.
JY - May 19, 2010
But that 20-30% stardom was Miguel Tejada, as I recall.
Not really important to harp on the past. Just saying that Triunfel seems to be legitimately hyped. Though it also seems like he’s a polarizing prospect. Goldstein hates him, others hate him. Some love him.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
His profile is pretty similar.
Build is not shortstop prototypical, cannon arm, body that says he should be hitting for more power than he is.
JY - May 19, 2010
I'm willing to wait on the power.
What choice do we have? But if he could turn into Jose Reyes only worse with the glove, I’d be happy.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Oh, how I remember the Reyes vs. Lopez debates in prospect chats.
JY - May 19, 2010
Well, Reyes almost didn't pan out either.
And with his injuries, he might be toast. But at least he has injuries. What does Lopez have?
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
A 25-homer year in Safeco?
thehemogoblin - May 19, 2010
Let's not be hasty, Master Meriadoc.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Wak is Treebeard.
Who the fuck is going to lead him near Isengard? This is war.
harkening - May 19, 2010
The roster construction is Wak's fault.
You need to realize this, and realize it two weeks ago. Wak was given a LF platoon, a more than serviceable DH, a utility infielder and an extra bench spot to work with in spring raining.
C – Johnson
1B – Kotchman
2B – Figgins
3B – Lopez
SS – Wilson
LF – Langerhans/Byrnes
CF – Gutierrez
RF – Ichiro
DH – Milton Bradley
PH – Griffey
C – Bard
OF – Byrnes/Langerhans
IF – One of: Tui/wilson/Hannahan
Carrying Sweeney on this roster is damning enough, but starting him when you have both Saunders and Langerhans to put in LF with Milton to DH? Seriously, there is no excuse for this. None.
In a late game that is going to be decided by one run, you want the superior defensive player out there. Then there’s acblue’s point that Josh Wilson is a better hitter than Griffey. This year he’s posting a higher OBP, a higher SLG, a higher BABIP, a higher ISO, a higher wOBA. SSS, sure, but Griffey is so far in decline it’s ridiculous.
harkening - May 19, 2010
I can't agree with that.
I’m not saying Wakamatsu hasn’t had anything to do with the roster construction, but ultimately it is Jack Z’s job. He had to sign off on the Sweeney move. He publicly endorsed it.
Starting Saunders / Langerhans against a lefty is not a great idea.
SSS on Wilson basically eliminates that whole point. We’ve seen Wilson before. He sucks. We KNOW he sucks. Griffey sucks too. They both suck. Saying Wilson is better with such confidence is ridiculous.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Do you really want to get into their trend lines and the whole concept of decline?
Also, Saunders is the goddamn future of this franchise in LF. Start him against a lefty. Start him against a righty. Start him against some freak that has an arm growing out of his sternum. His defensive upgrade over Bradley in LF is considerable, too.
harkening - May 19, 2010
I don't need anybody to explain to me Griffey's decline.
I’m starting to think you’re going into this argument on the assumption I’m a blind and ignorant Griffey apologist. I’m not. What I said was that Wilson is not a much more clear cut choice against a fastball / slider righty arm. Yes, I know Gregg has historically taken care of lefties better than righties, that doesn’t mean Wilson will all of a sudden hit against him.
Saunders is going to play and play plenty. I don’t believe we need to throw him against a left hander just to appease our asinine notions of him being the future. Yes, he’s part of our core to build around. No, he still shouldn’t be tossed out to struggle against southpaws.
And, no, I’m not saying that means Sweeney should hit while Bradley plays LF as the current plan entails. I’m all for bringing in another right handed 4th outfield to play and let Bradley go full time DH, kicking Swiffey to the curb.
But that’s not how our team is constructed right now, is it?
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
No. Pinch hitting Griffey then was inexcusable, as the decision rests on an assumption that Griffey is a major league player.
It was a 1 run game. 9th inning. Totally inexcusable.
marc w - May 19, 2010
Totally, huh.
Awesome.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
Yes, totally.
Griffey has been one of the worst hitters in baseball this year. He is terrible. He is worse than Josh Wilson even before you take the PH penalty into consideration. That Wakamatsu seems to have no concept of this is an indictment of his ability.
Aaron Campeau - May 19, 2010
So the move to pinch hit Griffey was the substantial factor in deciding today's loss?
I’m not trying to defend Griffey being on a major league roster, only that the move itself wasn’t egregious enough for the vitriol.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
You're only looking at the AB. But baseball events don't happen in isolation.
Say Griffey ties the game. Then you’re relying on Tui at short.
Inexcusable.
harkening - May 19, 2010
Too many assumptions being made.
Griffey didn’t tie the game. Hypothetical conversations are retarded. Tui at short is never a good idea, but it is what it is. It is what we HAVE.
The Typical Idiot Fan - May 19, 2010
No, the point is: there is no justification for the move. The 9th inning of a 1 run game is important.
So, don’t punt an out in that situation. Was it the highest leverage AB of the game or something? No, but that’s not the point. The point is, in a high leverage situation (even if it’s not THE highest leverage situation), don’t send up an ex-hitter.
It’s roughly equivalent to bringing in a position player to pitch to one batter in the 9th in a 1-run game. ‘Hey, he didn’t give up a home run!’ is not a justification for such a move.
marc w - May 20, 2010
This assumes we had a positive win expectancy at some point
Bearskin Rugburn - May 20, 2010
We always new Mike Sweeney was the biggest suckfest. Now it is confirmed with numbers.

Sweet blessed indifference, at last I have found you!
See y’all in the off-season!

Fuck you Sweeney. I don't think there was a single strike in that at bat.

I was once really into medieval arabic coins. It was clearly the smart play for someone with no money, as no one wanted the things. I have some very nice Ilkhanid d’s, and I really love the few Artuqid/Zengid figural coins.
Every year I ask for an Arab-Sassanian dirham with the diamond in place of the head (someone knows what I’m talking about) for my birthday, and still: nothing. I ain’t gonna live forever people.

Go back to the original for absurdity.
I’m pretty sure I had an armor lose to a settler at least once.
yakvalleycardinal - May 20, 2010
I completely agree on this.
As freakish coincidence would have it, I was actually playing Civ III instead of watching the game tonight, and as I read your comment I was actually invading another continent (America taking a continent away from the Iroquois – it seemed apt). I think I made the right choice; the game sounded much more dull.
In a failed and obvious attempt to stay at least slightly on topic, I’ll note that when a longbowman took down one of my tanks, I was eagerly looking forward to regression to the mean.

They may as well just relabel this OT for 5/19.
Because this has been the most interesting chart commentary I’ve seen yet.
Hopefulmsfan - May 20, 2010
Wow, a one run loss that the bullpen didn't blow.
I’m not as mad as some people about Sweeney not going for a walk.
I mean the next batter was Lopez for crying out loud.
Sam Regens - May 20, 2010
The interesting thing is, that it looks like Sweeney might actually be the most powerful bat in the lineup.
I mean that was low and away and he hit it out pretty far (this is Safeco field).
Not to mention his three home run games in a row.
I’m of course not saying that he’s the best hitter (he’s not by far) but he may be the closest thing to the Muscle that we have this year.
