Per Stone and Divish (I'll let them fight it out for who won).
Steps in the right direction. If nothing else Langerhans can help us when we get into extra inning games, and we now have a backup shortstop who can actually play SS.

Alright! Just one move left to make.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Three, actually
DFA Colome for Tui or Hannahan, White down and Kelley up
seattlebruin - May 2, 2010
Release Sweeney.
zeeehjee - May 2, 2010
That's the one abender is referring to
seattlebruin - May 2, 2010
I was reading about how upset Byrnes was after Friday night's game.
The human side to baseball must just be crazy. You invest so much mental energy into a team, only to find yourself no longer a part of it less than 48 hours later.
That said, this is a step in the right direction.
katal - May 2, 2010
Well considering the fact he rode a bicycle away from the stadium on Friday; I can't imagine he has many assets to get rid of up here.
kentroyals5 - May 2, 2010
Bikes are hard to sell in this economy.
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
Wigga stole my bike.
kentroyals5 - May 2, 2010
He couldn't think he was long for here hitting .107/.265/.179, though.
craig3410 - May 2, 2010
He has reason to believe he is more valuable than Sweeney or Griffey.
Slow Country - May 2, 2010
Well, yeah, real high bar.
My cat’s probably more valuable than Sweeney or Griffey in that he won’t frickin’ ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
craig3410 - May 2, 2010
My cat has a tiny strike zone and would hope for a walk.
The only bad part is that he walks away from home plate unpredictably and can’t hold a bat.
ignacio - May 2, 2010
I don't think this change makes us better.
If Griffey is still our starting DH against RHP, Langerhans won’t get any more playing time than Tui. This basically installs Sweeney as the perma-DH vs LHP.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Langerhans -> LF, Bradley -> DH, Griff/Sween on the bench
Though you’d need an emergency outfielder if Bradley is DH. Hm. That doesn’t really work. Still the only way I see a big improvement through this move.
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
It's the logical/smart thing to do, but Griffey isn't going to be benched until all his bobbleheads are given away.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Can't say why, but I don't see him putting up that big of a fight about it.
He supposedly signed as a bench guy, no?
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
I don't think they're going to give up on him for a while, they still think he draws fans to games (and are probably right).
There are soooo sooo many Griffey jerseys and Griffey signs and Griffey shirts at games.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
How many of those were bought ten years ago?
craig3410 - May 2, 2010
A lot look pretty new, and regardless people are coming to games because of him.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Wait until after tomorrow. Since the roster isn't squared away, there could be any number of surprises.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
You don't think having a backup shortstop who can play the position makes us better?
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Or an outfielder that isn't a complete assclown?
abender20 - May 2, 2010
I think this move makes us worse
Dewey N - May 2, 2010
That's because you are trolling
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Less enjoyable to watch, I mean
Dewey N - May 2, 2010
Also wrong.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
That is up for debate
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
I didn't enjoy watching the Prancing Pop-Up play
But that’s just personal taste.
Gihyou - May 2, 2010
If it means Sweeney becomes our everyday DH vs LHP, then no, I don't think it does.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Now all we need to do is get rid of Sweeney and we'll be on the right track.
That said I’m a little bit nervous that the move is going to be dumb again.
Kirk - May 2, 2010
There's going to need to be one more 40-man move to make this work.
As Dave points out, Bendynose to the 60-day DL?
BrianL - May 2, 2010
Fingers crossed for Alex Gordon.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
This would make me happy in my pants.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Sweeney for Gordon
They can have their own Junior farewell tour.
OceanBird - May 2, 2010
Don't you remember the KC series?
They hate him.
Coach Owens - May 2, 2010
I'm sure teams have asked about him,
and the Royals are easily the dumbest FO in baseball if they’ve responded with anything besides “Hell no.”
craig3410 - May 2, 2010
They don't seem to want him around all that much, so who knows?
abender20 - May 2, 2010
I will laugh my ass off if the Ms get Gordon for Tui.
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Read what you wrote...
And then realize why we all think that this could happen.
dkulich - May 2, 2010
Good news!
The Royals do in fact have the dumbest FO in baseball.
OlSalty - May 2, 2010
Astros?
Faux - May 3, 2010
Dave says:
Alex Gordon!
Eyeball Kid - May 2, 2010
Except Drayer says...
then…
So I find any move involving Sweeney unlikely (outside of a 15-day DL maybe).
Fuckmikereilly - May 2, 2010
Way to ruin it with logic.
Eyeball Kid - May 2, 2010
No it still makes sense
Someone needs to get cut now because we’re over our roster limit, probably a minor leaguer on the 40. But when we go out and get the Sweeney/Byrnes replacement he will need a spot, so that’s when you put Sweeney on the 60 day DL.
OlSalty - May 2, 2010
You can have Ryan Garko back
Adam J. Morris - May 2, 2010
Can we interest you in a Ken?
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Sure
And we’ll throw in a Michael Young.
Adam J. Morris - May 2, 2010
You'd probably have better dumping him on the Astros.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
We're hoping the ChiSox put in...
…a waiver claim on him this summer, and we can let them have him.
Adam J. Morris - May 2, 2010
You should give Dayton Moore a call.
He did wonders for us last season.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
Well, they did well with Rios. He'll be hard pressed to fall short of that contract.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
I remember when abender went off on a three day rant about how much we would miss Garko
seattlebruin - May 2, 2010
I'd still rather have kept him thank Sweeney.
abender20 - May 3, 2010
Thank Sweeney indeed
Gihyou - May 3, 2010
Gotta be
Unless Z is planning a surprise!
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
Yup, Shannon Drayer says another move will be made tomorrow to open up a 40th spot on the roster.
kentroyals5 - May 2, 2010
No.
He pitched today.
JY - May 2, 2010
And considering Ricky Orta had TJ earlier this spring...
I’d say he’s the obvious 60-day move, but Shannon could prove me wrong.
JY - May 2, 2010
Wak wasn't messing around. I like it.
melenious - May 2, 2010
Wak was messing around. That's why this happened.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
I'd like to think this is Z taking the roster back from Wak.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
Whatever meeting there was last night was Z's roster reclaimation.
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
If Sweeney and White are traded in the same move, that would be equivalent to Jack Woltz waking up with the horse head in his bed.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Most of my brain wants to believe this as well, a little stubborn part is holding out hope it's not entirely true.
It’s kind of hard to give up on Wakamatsu, and if all of this is due to his mismanagement then there’s more stormy weather down the road. His bullpen decisions alone are making it difficult to stay positive about him, stoic demeanor, etc. notwithstanding.
Kermit. - May 2, 2010
I like how he (outwardly, anyway) appears to handle his players. I get the impression he does the people part quite well.
It’s up to Jack to make sure that the roster in such a way that Wak can’t mess anything up.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Like you said, make him a deal he can't refuse.
Kermit. - May 2, 2010
Er, should also include Z in the mix.
melenious - May 2, 2010
When is Hannahan gonna be ready?
These are kinda like lateral moves. We still have no depth on our bench. I would rather have Tui and Hannahan up than Sweeney and Colome.
niceguysfinishlast - May 2, 2010
Tui Hanners and Josh Wilson is a bit much in terms of IF depth, no?
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
That's true
It would be better if one of them was an OF. Tui can play some OF I guess….who do we have in AAA that would be a good OF backup?
niceguysfinishlast - May 2, 2010
Langerhands who is now in Seattle...
Kirk - May 2, 2010
My point is it would be nice to have a 2nd backup OF
If Bradley is the DH and Langerhans in LF, we dont have any OF backups anymore
niceguysfinishlast - May 2, 2010
Saunders should stay in AAA, and he isn't hitting anyway.
You really don’t have any other major league options.
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
He finally snapped his 0-fer streak!
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
What is he hitting? .137? Something like that.
And no HRs again.
ignacio - May 2, 2010
He should be ready to go in a week or so
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Should be back soon
And once he is Tui is redundant. I would rather have Hannahan and a new RH LF
OlSalty - May 2, 2010
Jermaine Dye!
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Ew
Gihyou - May 2, 2010
We aren't the Angels.
Mariner John - May 2, 2010
That outfield makes me so :(
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
: (
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
There, there. Rivera's not that bad at least.
Mariner John - May 2, 2010
He is in CF.
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Time to remove the tagline, m'dear.
melenious - May 2, 2010
Josh Willingham!
OlSalty - May 2, 2010
Yes, please.
Matt Erickson - May 3, 2010
What's with bringing Josh Wilson up?
What’s his upside over Tui, especially considering how little Tui played? Or do we just have fetish for having lots of people named J Wilson on the 25 man roster?
Thanks.
doublemazaa - May 2, 2010
Defense
OceanBird - May 2, 2010
Defense and versitility.
Kirk - May 2, 2010
Tui can't play shortstop
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Or hit!
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Well this is up for debate
Dewey N - May 2, 2010
K in 45.5% of at bats. I'm not saying Josh Wilson can hit, but Tui sure can't.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
22 PAs and hugely irregular playing time.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
And Hannahan is still getting in work
It’s temporary as a stop gap, I’d guess.
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
That's my guess too
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
I hope so, Josh Wilson is a downgrade from Tui as a backup at every position other than shortstop.
Hannahan, at least, is obviously better everywhere.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
That doesn't make a bit of sense. Josh Wilson is a superior defender.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Tui is a better hitter, but can't play SS.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
If Josh Wilson is a better SS, he's a better 2b, 3b as well.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
I don't think that's necessarily true.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Correct, you don't.
abender20 - May 2, 2010
It's not necessarily true, no
It’s just overwhelmingly likely to be true for second and slightly less overwhelmingly likely at third. Tui is not a good defender at any infield position.
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
I guess it just depends on how much you believe Tui's bat vs Wilson's.
And how much you think the difference between Tui and Wilson is at SS defensively relative to their difference defensively at 2B, 3B, and 1B.
I don’t think it’s a huge difference either way, however, and I’d rather have Byrnes in LF and Bradley at DH against LHP than Bradley in LF and Sweeney at DH. That’s why I think the move totally is a wash or negligible difference.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
My belief that Josh Wilson is a much better defender than Tui has nothing to do with his bat
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Oh, I agree that Wilson is a much better defender.
I just think the gap between Wilson’s glove and Tui’s glove is smaller than the gap between Wilson’s bat and Tui’s bat at the 1B and 3B positions.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Just because you have a Tuiasosopo fetish doesn't mean he's actually good
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
I think Tui will hit for like a .305-.310 wOBA at the major league level.
I think Wilson is closer to .270.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
ZIPS has them as identical
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
That's interesting, seeing as Tui has hit better at every level at a much younger age.
What would you project them at?
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
Haven't seen enough of either one to disagree with the projection systems
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Ok, I just find it hard to see in this situation.
lailaihei - May 2, 2010
LEAVE MIKE... umm I mean TUI ALONE!!!!
Faux - May 3, 2010
Tui also can not play 3B well either, correct?
Edgar for Pres - May 2, 2010
I don't know if Tui can play any position at an acceptable level right now.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
He's playing local fan favorite pretty well.
the other side - May 2, 2010
He sure doesn't look like he has the arm for it right now
OlSalty - May 2, 2010
Poor Eric Byrnes.
kentroyals5 - May 2, 2010
I kinda feel bad for him.
He was terrible at baseball, but I had fun watching him. I’m pretty sure he snorted a line of meth every time he came out to pinch run for Jr.
doublemazaa - May 2, 2010
I will always appreciate a player that gives everything they have and goes all out like that.
It’s still a business and you have to produce so I agree with the move, but I don’t have the outstanding hatred for him. Liked the guy, the effort, but that’s not always enough.
He didn’t do himself any favors though with his Pull Back.
Boots. - May 2, 2010
Yeah, the Pull Back was bad, but
he didn’t get enough ABs to be tossed just yet. He was entertaining. Plus, he’s better and/or has more potential than Sweeney.
TrustBaseball - May 3, 2010
I'm sure going to miss him...
His antics kept me smiling as we drove into the black hole.
MT Olson - May 2, 2010
It's a Polish message from Jack Zduriencik...
It means Eric Byrnes sleeps with the fishes.
RustyJohn - May 2, 2010
This is the single greatest piece of news I've seen all week.
E-Lizz - May 2, 2010
I'll agree with that.
Watch Byrnes sign with someone and then tear shit up. F Him.
Ender15 - May 2, 2010
Not as exciting as me finding out I'm not pregnant!
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Wait, you wouldn't be excited about being pregnant?
seattle_since_81 - May 2, 2010
My parents would kill me if it happened again.
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Maicer has some potent seed, though, don't he?
abender20 - May 2, 2010
AND HOW!
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
Your kid would have such lovely eyebrows, though.
seattle_since_81 - May 2, 2010
Could be on Oprah!
Mariner John - May 2, 2010
Who do you think knocked me up the first time? :(
Eyebrows - May 2, 2010
!
Coach Owens - May 2, 2010
Banes!
Dewey N - May 2, 2010
I didn't realize Arnie was in that.
Double06 - May 2, 2010
Everybody has regrets.
the other side - May 2, 2010
This is also a good thing.
E-Lizz - May 2, 2010
The 40 man roster move will not be a 60 day spot
Someone is getting kicked off the team.
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
No wammy no wammy no wammy
Sweeney!
Brian Floyd - May 2, 2010
More likely to be a random minor leaguer
Lots of them are ready for the chop
Graham MacAree - May 2, 2010
Suck it Shawn Kelley
Dewey N - May 2, 2010
There's a name missing from this list.
It begins with Mike and ends in Sweeney.
voltron27 - May 2, 2010
Byrnes being swapped out for Langerhans was too obvious.
Tui has hardly been the worst of our problems but it was a roster construction problem that is now solved.
I will not be satisfied until Sweeney is replaced by an adequate RH hitter. Doesn’t even need to be able to play defense (though an OFer would be great).
Fuckmikereilly - May 2, 2010
Sounds like Dye.
If we do go that route I sure hope he is cheaper than what has been floating around and then what do we do?
I’m guessing we don’t go after him though as there is still a logjam at DH with Griffey.
Ender15 - May 2, 2010
Dye can't play outfield, I doubt his ability to hit, and most importantly...
he’d cost too much money. If by some miracle we could get him for like 1 mil while dumping Sweeney, I’d consider it.
Fuckmikereilly - May 2, 2010
Yeah I agree. I know he can't play outfield.
He can still hit for more power than anything we have though I believe.
Wish we went after Laroche back in the day.
Ender15 - May 2, 2010
We have enough DH-only type players on the roster.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
That is why he suggested dumping Sweeney while we were at it also.
Ender15 - May 2, 2010
We'd still have too many DH-only type players on the roster.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
Haha true. But it looks unavoidable with this team any way you look at it.
Ender15 - May 2, 2010
Signing Dye is unavoidable?
BrianL - May 2, 2010
I wonder what it would take to get Hunter Pence?
Coach Owens - May 2, 2010
The one young and talented offensive player with team control on the Astros?
abender20 - May 2, 2010
Yeah. So probably like Sean White?
moyerLIVES - May 2, 2010
Sweeney and Junior?
Coach Owens - May 2, 2010
Whoa whoa whoa
We don’t want a repeat of the Bedard trade here.
Cantu Easley Winn - May 2, 2010
I mean God, you probably want to give them Josh Wilson too.
Keep it real man.
the other side - May 2, 2010
Why don't you throw in Johermyn Chavez while you're at it.
Jesus christ!
Cantu Easley Winn - May 2, 2010
Whew. I missed Langerhans. I won't miss Byrnes.
royalcurve - May 2, 2010
I know, it's about time this team started hitting some walkoff dingers.
Eyeball Kid - May 2, 2010
Oooooh, his walkoff dingers. Swoon!
royalcurve - May 2, 2010
I'd take a freakin dinger in general at this point.
the other side - May 2, 2010
You can get knocked up that way, ask Eyebrows if you don't believe me
Kermit. - May 2, 2010
I'm surprised Goose hasn't made an appearance in this thread yet.
Then again, he’s probably dancing naked in the streets right now.
Benne - May 2, 2010
If they release Sweeney, I will join him.
the other side - May 2, 2010
He's in a joy induced coma.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
.
Almost.
Eyeball Kid - May 2, 2010
Huh, didn't notice that thread up.
Benne - May 2, 2010
Thank. God.
I really didn’t think they’d get rid of Byrnes so quickly.
sanford_and_son - May 2, 2010
This is for the better
I was becoming irrationally attached to Byrnes and hated myself for it
Corco - May 2, 2010
Bittersweet.
I love winning and all that, but I’m likely going to miss the Ballerina and his crazy antics.
We should hire him on as a third base coach. Imagine him waving runners around. . .
dice_tumbler - May 2, 2010
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AHAHAHAHAHA SUCK IT BYRNES! ENJOY UNEMPLOYMENT ASSCLOWN! AHAHAHAHAHAHA! I HOPE YOU NEVER GET A JOB IN BASEBALL AGAIN! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA!
Goose - May 2, 2010
We missed you.
JY - May 2, 2010
At least this has brought a smile to one unfortunate soul.
BrianL - May 2, 2010
Your hate is my source of power. Never change, Goose.
Benne - May 2, 2010
This is the happiest you have ever been about anything
Jeff Sullivan - May 2, 2010
I was just told that by a coworker about a half hour ago.
Goose - May 2, 2010
Of course, he'll still get $11M for doing absolutely nothing
Gihyou - May 2, 2010
But he'll do it to the max
Jeff Sullivan - May 2, 2010
