Holy shit, how did "The Paperboy Delivers!" not get used in the game thread today.
I am disappointed in us all.
Goose - May 9, 2010
Jeff said it, I think.
Then saved the picture for the chart.
JY - May 9, 2010
I don't get it. Can someone clue me in?
esoteric - May 9, 2010
Im confused too
I’m guessing either Josh Wilson or Saunders is “paperboy”…
Karma Police - May 9, 2010
Nickname from Sweeney last year
He’s baby faced, clean shaven and looks like the paperboy.
Brian Floyd - May 9, 2010
"Two dollars! "
msb - May 9, 2010
Go that way, really fast.
If something gets in your way, turn.
PDXTai - May 10, 2010
Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?
pdb - May 10, 2010
Ahahahaha Brumley has an entry on the chart.
BrianL - May 9, 2010
I fault Lopez for his out
I fault Brumley for Guti’s. >:(
Jeff Sullivan - May 9, 2010
How do you wave in the runner when Rivera is picking up the ball just as Guti is touching third?
BrianL - May 9, 2010
He's done it three times this year too
BrettJMiller - May 9, 2010
I have no idea!
Jeff Sullivan - May 9, 2010
Oh come on Jeff,
all you gotta do is wave your arms around.
Two Rs and Two Ls - May 9, 2010
You never know when you'll see the lawn dart
after yesterday’s ‘triple’ I can see what the reasoning was.
Bearskin Rugburn - May 9, 2010
Alozno Powell did it! Holy shit!
Poochie - May 9, 2010
How do you run a 3rd base coach out of town?
FisteeFisterer - May 9, 2010
We need a new 3rd base coach
Allen Wu - May 9, 2010
NOW!
Allen Wu - May 9, 2010
We have more pressing issues.
Brian Floyd - May 9, 2010
And I don't fault him
When’s the last time he had to deal with a runner? Just shaking off the rust.
Brian Floyd - May 9, 2010
Is there a 3rd base coach that people actually like?
Mariner John - May 9, 2010
Absolutely not
One of the worst jobs in baseball.
Jeff Sullivan - May 9, 2010
They should all try being less terrible!
Mariner John - May 9, 2010
Sue Johanson
CapSea - May 9, 2010
I'm not use to seeing all the +'s
Mejeh - May 9, 2010
Time to give "wilson" some capital letters?
ErictheRed - May 9, 2010
He's the little Wilson.
As compared to the bigger Wilson.
CapSea - May 9, 2010
I know
but I worry the lowercase letters denote a lack of ability.
ErictheRed - May 9, 2010
WiLsOn
CapSea - May 9, 2010
Josh Wilson is awful
Matthew - May 9, 2010
Thanks, sunshine.
JY - May 9, 2010
It makes his performance today even more fun!
Matthew - May 9, 2010
That's the spirit!
JY - May 9, 2010
Atta spirit, a guy has a good game and you find the perfect time to insult him!
true Seattle sports fan
cERA-RJ - May 9, 2010
He is still really bad.
Eyebrows - May 9, 2010
But his ssERA is fantastic.
CapSea - May 9, 2010
That's actually the opposite of a normal Seattle sports fan
but thanks for trying to make me feel more welcome and assimilated
Matthew - May 9, 2010
Well you do start out in the welcoming committee when you are a rookie commenter right?
At least that’s what I was told when I signed up.
seattle_since_81 - May 9, 2010
Wilson?
Fin - May 9, 2010
Lopie gets fatter the more he sucks.
He’s like Kirby.
FisteeFisterer - May 9, 2010
So Ryan Langerhans is a walk machine,
5 in the last 2 games.
Slow Country - May 9, 2010
Wow a day I'm not able to watch the game and this happens.
I should try not watching more often.
E-Lizz - May 9, 2010
Well Tacoma got shut out today
Seems like we can only have one good team between the Mariners and the Rainiers
Punkhazard - May 9, 2010
I'd much rather it be the Mariners
Allen Wu - May 9, 2010
Also, paint smells like paint.
aguay - May 9, 2010
I need to run a thought by people that has been bothering me.
Assuming average pitching staffs, would a team of Manny Ramirez’s (all bat, no glove) do better or worse than a team of Jack Wilsons (all glove, no bat)? For a long time I’ve felt that they could even out, but recently I’ve been thinking about the so called “diminishing returns” of defense, as well as how runs are scored:
- Manny Ramirez team can hit double after double and score 10 runs in an inning.
- Jack Wilson team can hit two singles in a row and is still not going to score.
I picture an all offense, no defense team finishing games winning with a score of like 14-8, while all defense no offense team finishes games losing with a score of 3 to 1. I’m starting to think that offense may be becoming underrated again. Someone talk me out of it? I’m aware that a “run saved is as good as a run scored” obviously, but run scoring is also not independent, and I think you need more offense to get the runs that are required to win the low scoring games.
Winning 8 to 1 today sparked this idea so hopefully this is not considered off topic.
CapSea - May 9, 2010
Are you asking if offensive contributions are chained and defensive contributions independent?
Matthew - May 9, 2010
Basically.
Or if perhaps the “Runs Saved” calculation is inaccurate. Really anything. Just thoughts on this matter in general. But yes, your response was the essence of my comment, though I’d replace “independent” with “more independent than offensive contributions.”
CapSea - May 9, 2010
Offense has a higher ceiling then defense. Assuming they are both at the pinnacle of their strengths, I would think the offense team would win, based on the higher ceiling.
joof - May 9, 2010
I have a way to elaborate on this as well.
An amazing defensive outfield will still not stop all things like extra base hits, home runs, walks, etc. So the team on offense will still be able to score runs even against a great defense. But a team that can barely hit singles and generally sucks isn’t likely to get that kind of offense support.
This is in addition to, not in replace of, the thoughts I mentioned earlier.
CapSea - May 9, 2010
So, is Vargas' sample size becoming large enough to conclude his not terrible?
Maybe even kinda good?
JAH - May 9, 2010
Yes, this has been covered in the recaps and recently got a post all of its own
FIP takes some time to become meaningful, but core stats like strike rate, strike swinging rate, and ability to face opposite handed hitters will stabilize quickly. He doesn’t have the fastball to be a real ace, and durability is still a question, I think. But he’s shown that he has enough command of his FB and excellent change to get legitimate outs when he needs to. He’s the reason everyone hated the idea of signing Washburn.
Bearskin Rugburn - May 9, 2010
Please, no more "By the Way" posts if the M's start winning again
Crystal for DH - May 9, 2010
You don't have to read them
DrunkAmerican - May 9, 2010
The last time he posted one was before Cliff Lee's debut
The time before that, we were going into Chicago.
Crystal for DH - May 9, 2010
WAY AHEAD OF YOU
Jeff Sullivan - May 9, 2010
When Bedard gets back this team is going to have 5 aces.
CapSea - May 9, 2010
Might as well go with a four-man bullpen then
which means three more spots for DHs! Paging Jermaine Dye, Gary Sheffield and David Ortiz
Matthew - May 9, 2010
This team is going to win the 2004 World Series so hard.
CapSea - May 9, 2010

Decatur - May 9, 2010

What does that mean? I forgot.
I Lick Squirrels - May 9, 2010
I'm not sure.
What is the opposite of losing? I can’t remember the word.
wyte_lightning - May 9, 2010
It's called a notLoss.
Slow Country - May 9, 2010

Fearless Frog - May 9, 2010
man.
w00tah - May 9, 2010
The Mariners are now 5-0 when using the pink bats.
In those games they average 6 runs a game (9, 2, 6, 5, & 8, respectively), on 11 hits and 1.8 HRs.
In conclusion, let’s always use pink bats.
SethGrandpa - May 9, 2010
Jesus that's like '96 all over again!
I’m sold!
Decatur - May 9, 2010
Brandon League had 3 Ks in .2 innings!
That’s a K% of 150%! A K/9 of 40.5! AMAZING
Dewey N - May 9, 2010
So glad I went to the game today with my mom.
I was next in line to get Brandon League’s autograph before the game. Then a douche crewmember said that was enough autographs and pushed him and me away. Noooooooooooooooooo.
TWownsU - May 9, 2010
So this is what victory feels like
I kind of like it
Aly Edge - May 10, 2010
