Sorry for the slow week, but there's nothing I can do about it. I see Vargas struck out Albert Pujols swinging. That's pretty cool.

In a season like this, you have no reason to apologize for a slow week.
I always feel guilty
I demand a refund!
Yes, give us our money back!
Give me the time I waste on LL back!
Winning streak!!
This game was like the last two games except yay run prevention.
You know what I want to read more of?

Comment threads about whether we should root for the Mariners to lose to get a higher draft pick.

I still think we can get Joe Mauer for Josh Wilson.
Draft picks are the new floor.

Little do they know…

GOD

2008 is the new 1995.

This game may or may not have happened
I would love to say that Vargas striking out Pujols was like Roy Hobbs vs the Whammer,

but it was much less exciting. Pujols looked embarrassed, however.

How would you describe League icing Holliday?
I bailed before the Mariners blew the initial lead.

It’s a reflex.

Sure did

Alfonso is several feet behind Pujols but appears just as wide.
He looks more annoyed than embarrassed.
Can't blame you for not caring about the team right now...
I do care

I’m just out of town and don’t have time to blog.

Neither time nor inclination!
Griffey splashing one into the fountain in KC was the best part of the game
I know older guys have issues with bladder control sometimes...

But really, in the fountain?

Gotta love the arc he put on it though
I watched 30 for 30 too.

I made the right choice; I turned back just in time for David Aardsma to not strike anyone out yet again. He scares me.

I enjoyed "June 17, 1994"

No narration or interviews, just news and sports footage, which was an interesting approach. Also reminded me what a travesty that trial was.

They call Medford the NYC of the west.

Of course you don’t have time to blog.

I'm not in Medford anymore!

Yaycation!

Drugs are bad.
Depends on the drug and how it's used.

Avenues of scientific inquiry ought not be closed off.

I understand. I was just saying if you didn't care, I would not blame you.
I just looked Vargas's stats up on FanGraphs.

It’s amazing how his pitch rates are almost identical to last year. He’s been a bit lucky too. Still, I’m happy to take it.

I had no faith in Fister coming into this season (whoops, I guess), but Vargas showed some legitimate ability last year.

He’s just absolutely solid and boy it would be neat if all the idiots in our system with great stuff had his ability to pitch.

It's quite impressive that his rates are holding steady since he spent almost half the year in the bullpen last year.
Although not on the chart, Saunders had a decent game.

I’m looking forward to seeing him in many more this season.

He got a hit against a tough lefty.
I wish Langerhans would get more starts at first.

He seems to be a better option than Carp or Kotchman right now.

Yes, seeing that he actually has been hitting this year.
He's livelier in every regard.

Kotchman has looked like a corpse. He’s given up.

Let me add my valuable voice to this conversation by saying

hooray victory!

Surprised Aardsma or somebody didn't blow it

And that’s not me being snarky, I legitimately am surprised. Pleasantly surprised.

This is a little off topic but...

There are only 5 players who were drafted and signed by the Mariners in the last 15 years who have accumulated more than 2 WAR in the majors. Who are they?

(Also, when I figured this out it made me a little sad. 5 players with 2 career WAR seems really low)

Adam Jones....
Ok one down, four to go.
By my count, starting with 1995.

Jose Cruz
Brian Fuentes
Joel Pineiro
J.J. Putz
Gil Meche
Matt Thornton
Adam Jones

Some other interesting names drafted by the Mariners. I picked the less well-known ones. A-Rod, Varitek, Langston, etc. are pretty obvious.

Rick Adair (third overall in 1979), Mike Hampton, Shawn Estes, Morgan Ensberg, Juan Pierre (twice), Rich Harden, Barry Zito, Jason Hammel, Travis Buck, and Gaby Sanchez.

Whoops forgot about Jose Cruz and forgot we traded Fuentes and that he didn't sign.... Brings it up to 7
Also in comparison

The Angels had 15 players that met this criteria with much much higher WAR totals.

By my count Oakland has 28
Gil Meche would almost have to be one of them.
Guesses without research:

Willie Bloomquist
Brandon Morrow
Gil Meche
Mark Lowe

Oops, meant to reply to Edgar for Pres
Lopez missing time would mean Tui playing every day. Every. Day. Tui. Playing.

I guess it’s time to get Jack back up and push Josh to third if this is the case.

The plus side to Tui playing every day is that he proves he is not a major leaguer in quick fashion.

Then maybe he goes away sooner?

How bad has Matt Tuiasosopo been this season? I'm glad you asked.

Through 58 plate appearances and 135.1 defensive innings, Tui has been worth -.5 WAR. Wrap your head around that.
Has he suffered from a bad BABIP? Well, it’s .267 on the season and he hasn’t made the kind of contact to demand something significantly higher. So how is his offense? .206 wOBA, good for a wRC+ of 21. Yes folks, Tui is hitting like 21% of a David Eckstein.

Tui's hitting like he's five inches tall?
That would be a step up.
As usual the Mariners drafted the wrong UW QB to be.
And here people I thought I hated him irrationally
He's also the Golden Boy, so there's another reason to want him sacked.
