Note: this one's actually fun! Data from Opening Day 2009 to the present.
| Pitcher | Pitch | Selection% | Strike% | Swing% | Whiff% |
| J. Vargas | Changeup | 21% | 65% | 56% | 20% |
| J. Santana | Changeup | 26% | 66% | 54% | 15% |
Vargas' change doesn't compare to Cole Hamels', and it doesn't compare to Tim Lincecum's, but Googling "Johan Santana" changeup yields 156,000 results, so you know it's a good pitch. And when it comes to results, Vargas is right there with him.
So that's cool. When you can throw an offspeed pitch that's that difficult to hit, that often, with that consistency, you can make it in the bigs. Of all the questions Jason Vargas had to face, I'm not sure there are any left to answer. Not about baseball, anyway.

So, Jeff, what non-baseball related questions do you have for dear Jason?

Now all we need are another two or three starters. sigh
Adam B - June 22, 2010
Felix, Vargas, Fister, RRS (maybe, we'll see, who knows?), & possibly Pineda for 2011

Not good enough

Yeah he still needs to face the question of whether or not he's Jewish
Fett42 - June 22, 2010
He came up with Florida and New York
is it still a question?

On the other hand, Vargas' fastball is nowhere near what Santana used to have
although, if current trends continue, by next year Vargas will have a better heater. Imagine, we traded Putz for a pitcher with better stuff than Santana!
Bearskin Rugburn - June 22, 2010
The Putz deal continues to look good for us.
Yay trading!

So JJ Putz is awesome again

I will never forgive him his Ichiro comments*
*I will forgive him if he takes an Ichiro liner off his disgusting soulpatch.
