Two Years Ago Today

You've probably been swayed by Cliff Lee. That's okay. We all have. We've all seen Lee go about his business with effortless abandon and nary a stumble, and at every moment it's been a pleasure, his tempo and his command and his professionalism sweeping over us like a soft satin blanket. He's been better than any of us could've ever imagined, and more, the experience of watching him has been accordingly pleasing. Cliff Lee, for all intents and purposes, has been perfect. Once you accept that even the best players will have their little failures, you understand that Lee has been everything he could've possibly been for this team, and for this fanbase.

Yet, Lee's imperfect perfection has come with an unforeseen downside - it's turned a certain fraction of the people against Felix Hernandez. Or, more appropriately, it hasn't so much turned them against him as it has altered the perception. Before, Felix was a blossoming ace. A king ascending his throne. A phenom who'd finally come around to reward the investment. After Lee, though, he became something else. Frustrating. Immature. Flawed. These are by no means new labels, but Lee's performance brought them back to the forefront, as people suddenly wanted more. They saw what was possible, and almost immediately the standards for Felix drew ever higher.

I get it. I've felt it. To be sure, Cliff Lee has spoiled us, and the experience won't soon be forgotten, even if he's gone in a week. He has opened our eyes to a whole new level of ability. But being jaded makes for no one's Sunday best, and I think we could all probably stand to take a step back and look at Felix on his own; look at who he is, and everything he can do.

Two years ago today, Felix Hernandez hit a grand slam off of Johan Santana. You can watch the video here, or you can scroll through the game threads. I know Felix wound up getting hurt a few innings later, and that kind of tarnished the occasion, but there's no taking it back. There's no taking back the fact that, two years ago today, Felix Hernandez hit a grand slam off of Johan Santana.

It's never been about Felix's history. It's never been about Felix's numbers, and it's never been about how Felix compares to other pitchers. From the beginning, it's always been about what Felix is capable of. And two years ago today, Felix proved that on any given day, he can literally do just about anything.

It is possible to appreciate Cliff Lee while still celebrating the other gift we've been given. Don't fall into the trap. Don't allow a glimpse of Cliff Lee to spoil the King. Because Felix is a rare gift indeed, and he who stares with too critical an eye is a fool. A spoiled, insatiable fool.

Mariners fans are a lot of things

But spoiled? Hm.

To some extent

Ken Griffey Junior, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez and Ichiro Suzuki. Three future Hall of Famers within the past 20 years and all but Edgar will probably be known to Baseball fans throughout the country for years.

Felix’s Grand Slam will always be one of my favorite moments. I was visiting my Grandfather and watched it with him. Of course I was freaking out and he had no idea the magnitude of it. Amazing.

Griffey, Randy, Edgar, A-Rod and Ichiro are five future Hall of Famers. Not three.

But I get what you’re saying.

Very bad error on my part

I definitely meant to write five.

I mean

We’ve got to watch a team with 2 of the greatest position players ever to step on the field, in addition to possibly the greatest pitcher ever, and one of the greatest right-handed hitters ever.

We’ve got to watch a team that won the most games in a season of any team, ever.

We’ve got to watch a man who is better at getting hits than anyone to ever play the game.

And we’ve still got Felix to enjoy.

We might not be the Yankees or anything, but we’re certainly not the Astros or the Cubs.

Not to mention we have this gift for at least five more years!
God bless that guy wearing a Sonics shirt in the crowd

In NYC even…

Even with the 13.8 WAR Lee put up in the previous two seasons, he's still pitching better than he ever has before.

He’s picking a hell of a time to go off, but to our benefit. Felix won’t have him as company for long.

Does this mean that Felix has more opposite field home runs than Jose Lopez?
I had forgotten about how much Bedard seemed to be freaking out about the HR.
Happy Bedard brings me so much joy.

I hope to see him again someday.

That was back when we weren't sure if he liked us or not.
As much as I love Cliff, I will always love Felix more.

We got to watch him from the beginning, and see him come up through the system. I’ll won’t feel the same way about FA’s or players we got in a trade as I will about home-grown talent, until that FA or traded player has been with the club for more than a few months.

Most M's fans are probably like this:

When you ask your parents who they love more out of all their children. They say, I love you equally, but I love you all in different ways. The Mariners fans(the parents) are excited by their new orphan child (Cliff Lee). This excitement will continue, but they still know that Felix Hernandez( their other child) has a special place, because he was with the family first.

Or I’m completely wrong.

You're completely wrong.
Eh, at least I tried.
Cliff is more like the cousin who is staying with us for the summer while his parents sort out some issues.

Felix, on the other hand, is our actual child who we have raised and nurtured ever since he was born. Even though Cliff might be better at some things (and we would expect him to be, since he’s a bit older than our Felix), and we might even cheer more loudly for him to let him know that we’re there for him and that we care, Felix is and always will be our baby, and we love him the most.

That's better. I think I love Cliff Lee more, though.
Perfect analogy.
I didn't rememeber

this. The person in charge of those archives has some humor.

Wow

Didn’t think they’d do that sort of thing.

Having Lee around has definitely diminished my enjoyment of Felix

But I can’t really bring myself to feel guilty about that.

Seeing Lee be masterful, confident, and in control is both an unmatched treat, and a sober reminder that Felix still has a loooooong way to go.

We’re absolutely spoiled by being able to watch both of them, since many teams don’t have even ONE pitcher that approaches either of them; but in my mind it’s not unreasonable to want to grab Felix by the shoulders and shake him, pointing wildly at Cliff Lee and saying “SEE? You’re very good now, but that is what greatness looks like. And you have that in you, if you work at finding it.”
