What an amazing pitcher
wyte_lightning - June 23, 2010
I'll second, third and fourth this. Also, Saunders!!!
Great game tonight. I wish more than anything that the team was performing as GMZ had wanted it to. I wish we didn’t have to let Cliff FUCKING Lee go. He is so much fun to watch. Hopefully, one day Felix will be as dominating.
TrustBaseball - June 23, 2010
Clff Lee is ours at the moment and please oh god do not take him from us.
Goose - June 23, 2010
Cliff too.
Goose - June 23, 2010
Felix is potential HOF but Cliff Lee right now is magnificent
ignacio - June 23, 2010
And it's got to be good for Felix and the whole staff to witness such gutsy, poised, intelligent pitchig
ignacio - June 23, 2010
Normally I hate when those terms are thrown around
But they describe Lee to a tee.
njd.aitken - June 23, 2010
It's much better when they are thrown around
when describing someone with a lot of talent too. Those things plus talent add up to a special player.

Please be traded soon, Cliff... Every start makes me feel more attached to you :(
lailaihei - June 23, 2010
I apologize for any offense I caused in the gamethread.
I will work to be better at commenting.

Read this post and this comment. They help, and are very simple to follow.
harkening - June 23, 2010
Most valuable pitcher in baseball and he only made 1 start in April.
Janic - June 23, 2010
I think knowing we're wasting our only year of Cliff Lee is one of the saddest things I've experienced as a sports fan
Gihyou - June 23, 2010
At least we get to see what it looks like when it works!
ThundaPC - June 23, 2010
Be patient, you'll get to see it from the other side someday too
d0nkey - June 24, 2010
It isn't the sucking and the losing that gets me.
I’m used to that.
It’s the waste of such greatness that gives me the sadness.
Big Jared - June 23, 2010
I love Cliff, but I'm used to wasting greatness.
We’ve had Ichiro for nine years (and this is his tenth season) and Felix for 4.5.
harkening - June 23, 2010
Shit.
A mark on my soul for taking Ichiro for granted.
Big Jared - June 23, 2010
I totally forgot to watch the game tonight, got watching Mythbusters and playing MW4.
But it looks like Cliff Lee was awesome again, which makes me happy.
Jeff Nye - June 23, 2010
We need to find some Asian guy named Cliff Li and trade him instead.
Vatinius - June 23, 2010
Hopefully this trade would be agreed to entirely over the phone.
Vatinius - June 23, 2010
I'm sure the Royals would fall for it
Astro’s too
njd.aitken - June 23, 2010
Why does one team get an apostrophe and the other doesn't?
Eyebrows - June 23, 2010
Levels of suckage.
the other side - June 23, 2010
What's worse, an apostrophe or no apostrophe?
In my experience punctuation is mostly neutral. Emotes excluded, obviously.
MT Olson - June 23, 2010
Hard to say
I think having one there is worse since in this case it is unnecessary.
the other side - June 23, 2010
Yes. One is wrong. The other isn't.
The one that isn’t is better.
Mariner John - June 24, 2010
Huh Michael Saunders...
http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/06/23/unassisted-double-play-too-flashy-for-mariners-michael-saunders/
How dare he be considerate.
Slurvey - June 23, 2010
Saunders is a class act for not showing up Soriano, then again, who cares about class.
Those Cubs fans were rude to my pal MB. If Saunders had done it, I wouldn’t be complaining at all.
TrustBaseball - June 23, 2010
Pretty interesting
Jeff Sullivan - June 23, 2010
That's basically Saunders' personality though.
He doesn’t like to show off or one-up guys.
JY - June 23, 2010
So you're saying he's never going to lead our team in homeruns?
joey90 - June 23, 2010
He might be talked into it
but only if it’s to help the team.
JY - June 23, 2010
Wow, Canadians are such a weird people.
CapSea - June 23, 2010
Yes we are
Allen Wu - June 23, 2010
Agreed!

msb - June 24, 2010
My brain knows we will never sign Lee
But my heart hurts when the defense isn’t stellar during his starts. I’d like to think it would give Z something to talk to him about. And, maybe he likes seafood. So the defensive flubs today were really annoying, even though I know it doesn’t really matter.
Snuffleupagus - June 23, 2010 via mobile
Ahahaha fuck the Cubs.
Goose - June 23, 2010
Cliff needs to one up himself
and throw a no-hitter! But besides that he was absolutely phenomenal tonight.
I love you Lee!
C-Nage - June 23, 2010
Wait and how did Figgins get the biggest suckfest?
Milton didn’t get an RBI.
C-Nage - June 23, 2010
Figgins made two defensive mistakes
Jeff Sullivan - June 23, 2010
I almost don't want to read the game recap, for fear of the meloncholy it will inspire in my heart.
Cliff Lee, I love you.
JAH - June 23, 2010
Cliff, I love you too. I'm so sorry we weren't able to pull off a winning team this year and
that you most likely won’t ever be a Mariner again. I would love to see you win a WS ring with my M’s. You are so much fun to watch.
TrustBaseball - June 23, 2010
I love Cliff too,
which is why I say that we should trade him so he can be with a deserving team and get his ring.
Of course, wouldn’t we all break down if Z were to pull some magic and sign him for next year and beyond.
Such a waste of an opportunity. Why did the M’s have to start winning again to make this harder?
magistermilitum - June 23, 2010
You're right, of course, I just hate to see him leave. Signing him for next year and beyond
might be a mistake because of his age. I’m guessing he wants a final 4 or 5 year contract. That wouldn’t really work for me. We needed to compete this year to enjoy all that is Cliff Lee. We can’t and should pay for 5 more years of his pitching. Honestly, I don’t see this winning streak bringing us much closer to the top. The odds just aren’t in our favor with Texas and their own streak (plus their cushy schedule), and the climb we’d have to make.
TrustBaseball - June 23, 2010
*shouldn't
TrustBaseball - June 23, 2010
Awwwwww Cliff.
And why couldn’t this have been against Silva.
the other side - June 23, 2010
Hey visiting A's fan here.
With Bedard coming back, I think you guys really have a shot at making a run at things. But whatever happens, you guys can be assured of finishing ahead of our mediocre mess of a team.
lenscrafters - June 23, 2010
We might finish ahead of you guys but there's no way we're catching Texas, we've now won 6 in a row and still haven't gained any ground on them
OlSalty - June 23, 2010
At least you guys get to watch a great pitching performance every night (RRS excepted).
We’re still hoping Ben Sheets makes the jump from shitty to merely mediocre.
lenscrafters - June 23, 2010
Brett Anderson?
wyte_lightning - June 23, 2010
Rehabbing
Jeff Sullivan - June 23, 2010
Lost ground
We’ve won six in a row and lost ground.
Although, until we’re at .500 the standings aren’t huge on my radar. The suckines of the division didn’t make the early season walk off/one run losses feel any better, and the win streak of the Rangers right now doesn’t make this win streak feel any worse.
Snuffleupagus - June 23, 2010
Went to the game tonight. Stupid Cubs ticket prices.
Fuck you Cubs fans booing MB, classless assholes. And ahahahaha, you got crushed. Fun game overall.
TWownsU - June 23, 2010
It was pretty great seeing their spirits plummet after after the M's went up 4-1.
And I’ve never cheered so hard for MB. Cracker-ass Cubs fans can suck it.
sanford_and_son - June 24, 2010
Jack Z can't realistically trade Lee in the middle of a long winning streak.
I suddenly care again if the Mariners win.
Pleeeeease keep on winning.
Fuckmikereilly - June 23, 2010
I do not see your logic
I think he will be traded regardless. Unless you mean a twenty game winning streak or something.
Snowman1025 - June 23, 2010
He means Lee can't be traded tomorrow
and if they win tomorrow then he can’t be traded the next day.
so yes, a twenty game winning streak or something.
Snuffleupagus - June 23, 2010
Essentially, don't lose until the trade deadline.
Fuckmikereilly - June 23, 2010
Rangers :(
Rangers’ schedule :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
JY - June 23, 2010
I imagine Dave will put up a post on USSM devoted to crushing hope again sometime soon.
He’s really good at pointing out the realities of a situation.
Jeff Nye - June 23, 2010
Coolstandings gives us a 0.3% chance of making the playoffs.
JY - June 23, 2010
Well, I meant more along the lines of this:
91 games left in the season.
Ballpark of 90 wins needed to make the playoffs.
That’d be 60 more wins.
So, basically, we’d have to win 65.93% of our remaining games to have a reasonable shot at the playoffs.
A team that played at that pace for a whole season would win approximately 107 games in a season.
So, basically, we’d have to play like a team just slightly worse than the 2001 Mariners for the remainder of the season.
Jeff Nye - June 24, 2010
It's that damned "perspective" again.
Makes me sick.
JY - June 24, 2010
The worst part is, 90 wins might not even get it done
It was just a nice round number to use for the math.
Jeff Nye - June 24, 2010
But... '95!
Snuffleupagus - June 24, 2010
Fuck '95
Jeff Nye - June 24, 2010
And we hate him for it naturally.
Slurvey - June 23, 2010
To clarify, I have no hope of playoffs.
But Lee won’t be traded in the middle of a winning streak. It would simply be insulting to the players. So as long as the streak continues, Lee stays.
Fuckmikereilly - June 23, 2010
This wouldn't be shocking.
It’d still be pretty terrible for our team though.
CapSea - June 23, 2010
Did anybody else at the game notice
…that Gutierrez’s favorite TV show is (supposedly) “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”?
…I almost cried.
tehbagel - June 23, 2010 via mobile
Those factoids seems like a good idea
but they seem to almost always make me shake my head (at best).
Bradley’s favorite sports movie is Mr. 3000.
Sometimes I guess it’s best just not to know.
Snuffleupagus - June 23, 2010
Josh WIlson's favorite meal is one of Chef Steve(?)'s specialties!
Mariner John - June 24, 2010
Figgy's favorite rapper is Tupac.
TWownsU - June 23, 2010
Betancourt's "favorite" food was "beans."
I’m guessing these answers are based solely on the English words that they know.
CapSea - June 23, 2010
Or maybe the number of syllables they can pronounce without their brain exploding.
CapSea - June 24, 2010
Forever my favorite
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2010
Hot dogs are not a snack.
Fuckmikereilly - June 24, 2010
Eye of the beholder.
ThundaPC - June 24, 2010
I like how it's plural.
Double06 - June 24, 2010
One of the best parts of this little run.
Besides watching the pitching has been watching Saunders get better. I’m pretty sure this was his best game so far of the season.
Hopefulmsfan - June 24, 2010
Oh and Cliff, please stay.
