Huh Blowers said the pitch that Saunders hit for his second HR was the Lefty Lube Zone.
Slurvey - June 30, 2010
That he did.
JY - June 30, 2010
.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
This is proof that Rob Johnson does actually see the ball approach him.
Edgar for Pres - June 30, 2010
This is proof that Felix Hernandez doesn't actually see Rob dropping those balls.
Janic - June 30, 2010
I didn't know Rob Johnson was 13
bamfor - June 30, 2010
KEEP LEE, BRING UP PINEDA, RUSH BEDARD BACK
WITH FIVE ACES, WE’LL NEVER FUCKING LOSE AGAIN!
craig3410 - June 30, 2010
WE could totally go .600 with that rotation!
Slurvey - June 30, 2010
In this hypothetical scenario, is Rob Johnson still catching these pitchers?
harkening - June 30, 2010
I'd bet my money on .600 with such a rotation
Allen Wu - June 30, 2010
Though Pineda is still unproven, I can't imagine him being worse than RR-S has been
Allen Wu - June 30, 2010
HELL, JUST BRING ONE OF THEM UP. FELIX, LEE, XXX, FISTER, VARGAS IS 5 ACES ALREADY
joof - June 30, 2010
Fister and Vargas are good, but not Aces
They’ve just been lucky.
Allen Wu - June 30, 2010
Some luck.
But also some legit improvement.
THolt - June 30, 2010 via mobile
No fooling?
CapSea - July 1, 2010
It's really sad that we won't get to see much of a Felix, Lee, Bedard, Fister, Vargas rotation
That one automatic loss per turn has been hurting us all season.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
Hey, technically, this team could still break the '01 team's record for wins...
if they finish the rest of the season with an 84-1 record.
craig3410 - June 30, 2010
Well RRS is facing Sabathia tomorrow so it will have to be 84-0
killer_ewok18 - June 30, 2010
RR :S
Bummer. Atleast Bedard should be back soon.
Fin - June 30, 2010
He looked so much better for two innings!
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
This was pitching sex today
aussie_chop - June 30, 2010
Lopez walked today!
Marinerfanjake - June 30, 2010
Actually, that was a full out sprint
Henry H - June 30, 2010
Is there a ceiling!?
MFAN - June 30, 2010
Probably.
Fin - June 30, 2010
There is definitely a ceiling.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Yes.
It has spikes.
JAH - June 30, 2010
No wonder we never go that high.
MFAN - June 30, 2010
Wictory!
Slow Country - June 30, 2010
What's Rob's bases allowed compared to his total bases now?
I remember when it was like 20 allowed to 19 contributed.
TWownsU - June 30, 2010
This is the first time that I regret not watching a game this season.
Goose - June 30, 2010
Watching from a bar is so not the same
I didn’t even realize Saunders hit a second one :(
Jeff Sullivan - June 30, 2010
Ditto
Griffin Cooper - June 30, 2010
So, I compiled some stats. Over the past 6 Felix or Lee starts, the pitching line has been the following.
9 IP
6 H
.5 HR
1 BB
7 2/3 Ks
1 1/3 Rs
Absolutely insane.
joof - June 30, 2010
Man, I felt special when you shared that with me!
Now I find out I’m just your sounding ground for ideas? I am hurt!
Fez - June 30, 2010
Might as well share the wisdom with the masses, no?
joof - June 30, 2010
2/3 of a strikeout isn't very useful.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
That's why they call it average.
joof - June 30, 2010
But... but...
0-2 to 19 batters :(
Matt Erickson - July 1, 2010
I hate the Yankees so much, that I hope we keep Lee so that he can beat them
again next week at Safeco. Then Felix will beat them again. Then maybe get Bedard to beat them. And Vargas will beat them.
Then we can trade Lee and lose the rest of our games for all I care.
P.S. Saunders is awesome. It’s a great sign that he’s hitting for so much power, even if his OBP sucks so far.
Rudy4three - June 30, 2010
Saunders OBP will improve with time. I'm so glad he has the power I thought he had.
I think we finally have an answer in LF. It’s been a long time coming.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Yup. Tonight was a very good night. I have no doubt Saunders will bring that batting average and OBP
up with more experience. The power he’s flashing is something we had to see at the ML level.
I actually feel for the first time in awhile that we have a good young position player who is going to be a valuable asset to this team for the next handful of seasons.
Rudy4three - June 30, 2010
I am hoping that Jack Z waits until after the All-Star break to trade Lee just so I can see him pitch at Safeco once more.
Boz86 - June 30, 2010
Yeah, I suppose he could get hurt, but Im really content with taking the draft picks if something like
that happens. I haven’t been blown away with some of the names mentioned in possible Lee deals. I’m okay if we just get picks.
Rudy4three - June 30, 2010
I kind of hope for this just because it would be the most fun draft day ever.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
Plus, if he stays it gives us more time to raise money for his contract
Jeff needs to make it a full blown fucking campaign.
OceanBird - June 30, 2010
I think that is totally worth keeping Lee for the rest of the year.
Fin - June 30, 2010
I'll be honest its just because I want to see us go through a Lee-Felix-Bedard-Vargas-Fister rotation atleast once.
Fin - June 30, 2010
That would be AWESOME!
Although, I’m not sure it’s worth it. Isn’t that just to greedy?
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
*too
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Assuming Cliff stays for one more start and Bedard is ready...
RRS, Fister, Vargas, Lee, Felix, Bedard is the lineup. So we’ll hopefully get it at least once.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
on YES, Al Leiter had some pretty good comments.
Basically, his comments were down the lines of “Jack Z is not stupid” and won’t automatically deal him. Al’s view of Cliff’s worth was also pretty high… like 4 really high quality MLB ready prospects, I believe. His view is that offers need to be A LOT higher than the 2 comp picks that the M’s get if he leaves in free agency.
Henry H - June 30, 2010
You're not getting four elite prospects for a half season of anyone, comp picks or no.
Jeff Nye - June 30, 2010
No team is going to get hosed in this deal. But is possible for us to get a good deal.
If GMZ gets more than one team involved in the trade, we could end up with more than just a ready-to-go player and a high prospect. Whoever gets Lee obviously will want to part with a subpar SP, which we really don’t need. There are too many scenarios/needs for now and in the future for me to get my head around, but I believe GMZ can probably get maximum value for us and satisfy everyone else involved at the same time.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
If we can somehow pluck and pluck from the Rangers farm system, it would be a dream scenario.
They can’t take on salary? Great, it’s 4 million dollars – pay it. We need to deplete the shit out of their future while building up ours.
Kenneth Arthur - June 30, 2010
It doesn't need to be a lot higher than the 2 comp picks.
Lee is worth absolutely nothing to us at this point beyond comp picks.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
Lee's value is not dictated by his value to us, its his value to the teams interested in him.
A man with no arms can still sell another guy a pair of gloves for a decent price because there is a market for gloves. Lee is worth more than two picks to us because people will pay more than 2 picks for him.
Edgar for Pres - June 30, 2010
Just pointing out his comments.
Not commenting necessarily on the relative “correctness” of Al’s comments. You are also getting a half season of ticket revenues and probable wins during his starts. His view seems to be that Lee is potentially the one elite difference maker for some teams (there is no other person available in this class). I suppose a way to look at it whether any team on the cusp of the playoffs believes it is worth mortgaging their future to win this year.
Henry H - June 30, 2010
A lot of commentators and radio guys think we're going to hit a gold mine.
I heard Michael Kay on the radio today state we were getting four great prospects that would revamp our organization.
However, he then later started pondering whether the Mets could get Lee and Figgins, and we’d get Luis Castillo…
I think we’d all be happy getting one real good prospect and a couple of guys who could be average regulars
Rudy4three - June 30, 2010
Every time I listen to Michael Kay
I can’t decide who I want to punch in the head, me or Michael Kay.
Matt Erickson - July 1, 2010
I'm not content with draft picks. Lee is worth so much more than 2 first round draft picks.
If that’s all we get then our GM failed.
Edgar for Pres - June 30, 2010
Unfortunately, our GM won't fail. He'll get the best deal he can and we will have
to see a very good pitcher (who was OURS) pitch in another uniform.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
I'm kind of excited to see what we can get for him even though I love watching him pitch.
Edgar for Pres - June 30, 2010
Jack Z does some interesting things
Maybe he goes totally off the board and does something like dealing him to the Yomiuri Giants for the rights to every child named Ichiro born in Japan for the next 20 years…
Henry H - June 30, 2010
He better
Seeing Lee at the ASG in another uniform (or pitching for another league!) would suck.
Drew_D - June 30, 2010
Has this happened before?
Does anyone know if an All Star player was dealt before the game, however they only played a few or no games with a new team? An obscure question, but I’ve been thinking about it recently.
OceanBird - June 30, 2010
If he goes to the NL, I don't believe he will make the All-Star team. They would only count NL stats.
I think.
Kenneth Arthur - June 30, 2010
Sorry, think you might be wrong
Pitchers are selected by the managers of the teams. Thus, they probably can select whoever they want.
Henry H - June 30, 2010
Close.
I believe pitchers are selected by player voting, however the manager may also add a pitcher as part of his selections. I’m pretty sure Charlie Manuel would select Cliff “I corn holed the Yankees in the world series for you” Lee for his All Star squad.
Drew_D - June 30, 2010
Didn't Sabbathia?
Or was he traded after the break?
Hopefulmsfan - June 30, 2010
He didn't make the All-Star team that year.
Strange, I wonder how many Cy Youngs weren’t All-Stars.
From my understanding, if the roster were to be chosen after the trade, Lee would pitch in his new team’s uni. If the roster were chosen with Lee as a Mariner, then he was traded before the game, he would play the game as a Mariner.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
Jeff Shaw
“[Shaw] was selected to the 1998 All Star Game as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, but was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the beginning of the All Star break, thus his first game he pitched in a Dodger uniform was in the 1998 All Star Game.” Infallible Source
apunetid - July 1, 2010
Has there been a more enjoyable game this year?
We got two condor homes, a muscle sex blast and a dominant Felix performance at Yankee stadium.
houseofprime - June 30, 2010
homers*
houseofprime - June 30, 2010
Homes sounds gangster.
Although I’m probably too white to comment.
the other side - June 30, 2010
Saunders deserves to hit higher then 9th.
Cthaller59 - June 30, 2010 via mobile
What if moving him down adds too much pressure?
M'sFanatic - June 30, 2010
That's what Branyan is here for!
TWownsU - June 30, 2010
At some point he'll have to face it.
MT Olson - June 30, 2010
Nah we need him there to drive in Wilson and Johnson.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
Put him fifth
And put Lopez ninth.
Drew_D - June 30, 2010
Park Effects
Safeco Field hurts our hitting more than it helps our pitching.
Yankee Stadium aids or hitting more than it hurts our pitching.
Is this postulate correct?
lokiforever - June 30, 2010
Cliff Lee and Felix. Safeco really benefits the Vargas and Fister types who get results like
Rudy4three - June 30, 2010
This is why I am scared for RRS.
I have images of the Yankees lineup having Batting Practice with him tomorrow.
Fin - June 30, 2010
I want RRS to succeed with the utmost power of my being. But against the Yankees and CC Sabathia, it doesn't look good.
joof - June 30, 2010
It's going to be one of those games where I cringe as I look up the box score.
the other side - June 30, 2010
Well, may Wak has the good sense to pull him early, before we get buried.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Maybe we could just start David Pauley.
Fuckmikereilly - June 30, 2010
*maybe
not a good night for me.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
SBNation really needs an edit function.
I believe its been brought up already, so hopefully they have programmers working on it.
Fin - June 30, 2010
No, it's my bad, I should have done preview. Read it twice and fixed it.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
RRS is part of a secret revenue sharing agreement
The other teams pay the M’s to have him start to get them out of batting slumps….

Well, I think Dave did compare him to Jarrod Washburn back when he was first called up.

This is one of those games I'm really going to regret not staying home to watch
Griffin Cooper - June 30, 2010

This is how I envisioned the season in January.
minus Figgins losing the ball in the ether

As did most of us.
sanford_and_son - June 30, 2010
Stan Verret called Saunders
The vice president of run support.
Marinerfanjake - June 30, 2010
Fucking Mariners
If you bastards had played to your normal levels we would be having a completely different conversation now. It’s not Wak’s fault, it’s not Sleepy Griffey’s fault, it’s your fault. I’m looking at you Figgins. And you Bradley, you headcase sombitch. And definitely you Kotchman, you goddamn screwface double play machine. Lopez, fuck off and go away. Johnson, eat shit and die. White, you are terrible. League, throw the damn splitter. Wak is far from blameless and yes, they’ve been unlucky. But mostly they sucked. They sucked and now it’s going to cost us Cliff Mother Fucking Lee and equal a shit-ton of meaningless summer baseball.
I have departed the Tropic of Cairo and entered the Realm of What the Fuck. I am annoyed.

Moral victory of the year.

IT WAS SOOO GOOD.

I saw the game.
And you are completely right.

I had stayed home all day 2 days in a row and I had to get out of the house
I mean, I knew I was taking a risk missing Felix day but I didn’t think this would happen
Griffin Cooper - June 30, 2010
If the you know the matchup the next day is RRS vs. Sabathia
You stay home for Felix day, and then you get out of the house.

Dammit.
drblacknwhite - June 30, 2010

That picture made my heart skip a beat. I thought Felix had finally done it and I’d missed it :(
Eyeball Kid - June 30, 2010
So was the win expectancy 100% when Saunders hit HR #2?
Or just 99.99999999% ?
Aly Edge - June 30, 2010
Once the cake is iced, it's iced. Whether you call it 100% or 99.99999999%.
The icing isn’t coming off.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Reply fail. I'm out of here. Enough screw-ups for this week.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
It's more a question about how win expectancy works
Can it ever be 100% before the 27th out is recorded?
Aly Edge - June 30, 2010
It can be so close that it rounds up
but technically, no, of course the WE% should never be 100% before the end of the game.
Jeff Sullivan - June 30, 2010
You are absolutely right. It's not over until it's over.
TrustBaseball - June 30, 2010
Oh, but the icing will come off
You just have to be unlucky enough to be facing Sabathia, Fielder, Sandoval, or any of the other fats guys.
OceanBird - June 30, 2010
Yeah WPA is basically 100% when you're up 14-2 through 6 innings.

*Can't. My typing sucks as bad as our offense in May.
Sarchasm - June 30, 2010
A couple more wins and the Mariners go from bottom-feeders to a sub-.500 team.
It seems to be consensus here that Cliff Lee is gone, but I really hope the Mariners bust their asses to keep Cliff here for the rest of the year, I really want to see him stay.
