Al lright! Everyone back on the pile! Wooo! Playoffs! Disregard that the series was at home and that we got to use both Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee and that we won one of the games in part thanks to an umpire mistake. Playoffs!
In actual good news our starters went 7.2, 7.0, 8.0 and 8.0 innings this past four game series. That was a really nice gift they gave the bullpen with 13 consecutive games left to go in this stretch. All things considered, I'm calling that Felix's best start of the season and getting him back into 2009 form would help alleviate some of the pressures on the offense. Cliff Lee is in peak stride so having those two pitch back to back the way they just did gives us a lot of winnable games.
Too bad about Erik Bedard. He's still not even back to throwing bullpens yet so you can imagine the time frame that he still have to overcome.
Not that Doug Fister or Jason Vargas have been unimpressive this season, but this is certainly an uninspiring stretch of pitchers to run out there against a divisional foe that we badly need to reverse the latest trend against. Then again, neither are their pitchers. Joe Saunders again? Thanks, Anaheim! And hey, the return of Joel Pineiro.

The drop from Fister's performance to RRS's performance this year is massive.
And dead arm is often just that, but sometimes it’s actually a worse arm issue. I’d say we’re reacting appropriately.

I’m still new around here, but given the numbers I see under Vargas’ name – is it safe to say that he’s not just pitching over what his numbers would predict; but rather that he’s pitching wayover what his numbers would predict? I mean, everyone says he’s got good “stuff” (and the overall K rate kinda reflects that), but the small spread in velocity between his pitches and the overall GB of just 30 – eeewwww!
…Or am I not catching some of the meaning in the numbers?

It's on the standard scouting scale of 0-80.
So 50 is above average. 45 is… I think that’s considered average. Both of those are not bad. His GB rate isn’t that good because he’s a flyball pitcher. It’s not ideal to be a fly ball pitcher, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s a bad pitcher. Some really good pitchers are flyball pitchers. They just tend to be a little home run prone.

20 - 80 scale means 50 is average...
Two ways to “prove” that 50 is the middle:
1) Its the same as a 0 – 100 scale, you’ve lopped off the same amount at both ends.
2) 50 is equidistant from both the maximum and minimum values: 20 + 30 = 50. 80 – 30 = 50.
And that’s the extent of Maths for me on a Friday as I head over to Safeco Field!

I don't have much of a preference between Tui and Kotch at this point
Kotch’s glove is awesome but he hasn’t got a hit in what feels like weeks. Then again neither has Tui. Neither contributes enough for me to care. I just wish we’d put Langerhans at first, Saunders in left, Bradley at DH.
