I honestly didn't know what time the game was today until it was in the 5th inning
Fuzz - July 31, 2010
57 games left
Can the team win 24 of them? Stay tuned!
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
Which will it be?
Crushing disappointment or just plain disappointment?
killer_ewok18 - July 31, 2010
Because at this point I really don't care if they lose 100 games
killer_ewok18 - July 31, 2010
I hope they go 2-55 and finish 41-121.
If you’ve gotta suck, suck awesomely. That’s what I’ve always said.
craig3410 - July 31, 2010
Why the two wins?
Hopefulmsfan - July 31, 2010
No
Dewey N - August 1, 2010
It is still nice to see Saunders doing well.
There’s still some hope.
Hopefulmsfan - July 31, 2010
I have a very deep scary feeling, that the coming years(2-4), are going to be nightmares
for us.(Like not acheving NOTHING in our club history, except for having brusts of success here and there).
scooter4 - July 31, 2010
People thought this during 2008 and our situation was far far worse
We have Ichiro, Guti, Saunders, Smoak, Ackley, Felix, and Pineda at the very least as a core. We’ll be okay.
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
Yep, we have giant holes at 3B, SS, C, and at least half of our pitching staff spots, but we're not that bad.
I mean, we’ve accumulated approximately negative 7.4 WAR from certain players on the team already. If we managed replacement level performances out of those guys, our record wouldn’t look quite so bloody awful. I’m not sure how many wins the average team loses to below replacement level performance, but I doubt it has much of a year-to-year correlation, as teams tend to replace shitty players with less shitty ones.
lailaihei - July 31, 2010
Figgins may not be a hole, and Moore may not be a hole
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
My completely uninformed opinion concurs....
big IF, but if the young guys continue to develop there is a young core of players with a rotation of Felix, Vargas, Fister, possibly Pineda in the rotation and some of those freshly acquired arms in the bullpen. Just a question of how soon the plan comes together.
RustyJohn - July 31, 2010
Significantly, these aren't just potentially decent players like, I dunno, Johnson or Carp
Guys like Ackley, Pineda, Smoak, and to a lesser extent Saunders – these are potential difference-makers. Good teams need a core of stars. The Mariners may be working on one.
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
I have no hope for Moore.
He falls into the same bin as Tui for me. I can stand seeing a guy come up and not hit as long as he fields. See, Michael Saunders from last year. And I can stand seeing a guy come up and hit, but not be able to field.
I lose all immediate hope when the prospect comes up and sucks immensely at both.
Matthew - July 31, 2010
I'm kind of with you here, Matthew. I want to believe Moore can hit, but I'm just not convinced.
But listing 3B in there was a mistake, Figgy probably will be not awful next year.
lailaihei - July 31, 2010
No hope at all?
I don’t think Moore will be very good, but the baseline for catchers is very low.
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
I have zero expectation of him being a useful starter in the immediate (1-3 year) future.
This is not a rational expectation. This is entirely an emotional reaction to his 2010 performance. I won’t stop projecting him based on his scouting and numbers, but I will not believe it until I see it.
Matthew - August 1, 2010
And if he manages to succeed, it will surprise me!
My baseline is now also very low
Matthew - August 1, 2010
I hope so captain. For the sake of not only the Mariners, but for us as well.
scooter4 - July 31, 2010
Don't get me wrong, we could totally fuck this up
but that would same some impressive fuck-uppage.
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
Can you please try to make a better effort toward using the reply button
and using punctuation correctly? It’s distracting.
Matthew - July 31, 2010
Sorry won't happen again.
scooter4 - July 31, 2010
Thanks.
Matthew - July 31, 2010
Such a boring day.
Mariner Melee - July 31, 2010
I don't mind losing games whenever Fister or Pauley is pitching
But I wish they’d win at least Felix’s starts.
Aaroniero Arruruerie - July 31, 2010
Only 66 losses, we can still finish .500
Poochie - July 31, 2010
Postgame
Rizzs was trying to credit Slowey for his dominating pitching, and Neihaus would not have it— he put it all on the abysmal offense. This was followed by Pitman being surprised that Figgins was still there, if they had any kind of offer for him
msb - July 31, 2010
Love that Niehaus is completely pissed and disgusted
He must be realizing his time on earth is coming to an end and he recognizes the Mariners will never make it to the World Series while he is alive.
RustyJohn - July 31, 2010
It's probably worse than that.
His time as a broadcaster is getting shorter by the day and he’s spending it calling historically bad Mariner teams playing boring baseball. Lord knows how stale the rye bread and mustard are getting since there has been no reason to break them out.
ThundaPC - July 31, 2010
Poor Dave...
He deserves better…
G@B3 - July 31, 2010
The suck was really spread out this game
Matthew - July 31, 2010
The worst player was fine for six innings
Jeff Sullivan - July 31, 2010
That picture over the graph...
That’s not Challenger, is it?
SeattExPat - July 31, 2010
It is Challenger
And I have to say that its the first thing on LL that’s seemed kinda tasteless. Maybe I’m the only one; but let’s not forget that it was a violent, tragic, and fully preventable loss of life. I know what Jeff was going for, and I do truly love his work… But equating a game loss to something that caused violent death just seems a little much. Besides – on a funnier note: the M’s don’t have enough power in their lineup to cause an explosion like that! Maybe this instead ?
NWade - August 1, 2010
The first thing huh
OlSalty - August 1, 2010
Wow.
sanford_and_son - August 1, 2010
I've never seen Lookout Landing make fun of loss of life before.
Certainly nothing that happens at a routine intersection.
ThundaPC - August 1, 2010
What does happen at a routine intersection, however
Is Nick Adenha- argh sorry, sorry everyone.
OlSalty - August 1, 2010
On second reading, aw crap this was the joke you were going for
Apologies, well played.
OlSalty - August 1, 2010
I was three months old for the Challenger explosion so in my brain it's no different than making fun of the World Wars
Jeff Sullivan - August 1, 2010
Funny how life/time works, eh?
I was 8 years old watching the launch live in a classroom. Remember, the first “teacher-in-space” was on that launch – so classrooms all across the country were tuned in and proud teachers everywhere were promoting the event. There were classroom activities leading up to the launch, teachers used space-themed lessons in the days/weeks leading up to the launch, etc (and I know this wasn’t just at my school, it happened all over)… Then, ka-boom. Live on TV.
Also: Makes you wonder about the kids who were 3 months old when 9/11 happened, eh? They’ll never know a world without it, yet not having lived through it at an age where they can remember and/or empathize with the people around them means that they’ll have a totally different attitude than you or I.
NWade - August 1, 2010
The look on the teachers faces must have been priceless and if I was a student then I would have been suspended for a month.
Robert - August 1, 2010
I apologize for being a bit of an asshole
Jeff Sullivan - August 1, 2010
I give you credit for pushing the envelope.
SeattExPat - August 2, 2010

Jeff Sullivan - August 1, 2010
Totally Fine with that post, BTW...
Making fun of people’s deaths is different from being angry and wishing someone would die (especially when its known that the wish is being done for effect or for humor). shrug At least, that’s my take on it.
Still love the work you do here, Jeff!
NWade - August 1, 2010
I try my best to leave be other people's reactions to jokes like this.
Please do the same. The lecture isn’t needed.
