Rangers officials were scratching their heads Friday morning as to why the Mariners would have taken a deal that included catcher Jesus Montero and second baseman David Adams.
The Rangers believe they could have offered a much better package in that trade and were prepared to do so.
The Mariners want Justin Smoak but club officials have indicated the Rangers aren’t interested in doing that. They have told people who have asked they aren’t inclined to trade Smoak. They will obviously move first baseman Chris Davis, who is leading the PCL in hitting.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia would satisfy the Mariners need for a catcher. The Rangers also have outfielder Engel Beltre at Double A Frisco. From a pitching standpoint, the Rangers are deep, beginning with Derek Holland, Omar Beltre and Blake Beavan at the top of the Minor League depth chart and going all the way down.
They just don’t want to talk about Tanner Scheppers or Martin Perez.
Talented 3rd baseman but his offensive year is really being helped by the green monster. Going to be a free agent after this year. Wouldn’t make this deal.
The reason the Mariners would take that deal is because Montero is better than anyone in their system. Only Smoak is comparable. Also, Salty isn’t very good.
“Rangers officials were scratching their heads Friday morning as to why the Mariners would have taken a deal that included catcher Jesus Montero and second baseman David Adams. The Rangers believe they could have offered a much better package in that trade and were prepared to do so.”
That Montero deal sounded so good that it’s hard to imagine anybody scratching their heads about it.
WE HAVE ENTERED THAT AWKWARD STATE WHERE THERE IS NO LONGER ANY NEWS TO GET EXCITED OVER AND THINGS AREN'T HAPPENING FAST ENOUGH
IN DEFERENCE TO THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH, I WANTED TO REFER TO IT AS “THE DOLDRUMS” BUT THAT DOES NOT SEEM TONALLY APPROPRIATE FOR THE KIND OF RESPONSES WE ARE HAVING
THEY SHOULD STILL BE PLAYING HIM ANYWAY, I WOULD THINK
PROSPECTS DON’T RANDOMLY PICK UP SKILLS UNLESS THEY HAVE REASON TO. UNLESS, OF COURSE, THEY’RE FELIX AND JUST HAVE A 70-80 SLIDER THEY’RE SITTING ON BECAUSE IT’S FUNNY
I WOULD ARGUE THAT TUI STILL INTRIGUES ME BECAUSE HE HAS THE ABILITY TO HIT TO ALL FIELDS. IT’S MERELY THAT HIS DEFENSE IS UNDENIABLY BAD WHEREVER YOU PUT HIM. SAUNDERS, AT NO POINT IN HIS CAREER, HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT ABILITY, SOMETHING THAT THE M’S BASICALLY DRILL INTO EVERY YOUNG PLAYER IN THE SYSTEM. IT’S AN INTERESTING CASE-BY-CASE STUDY THOUGH.
Crazily enough - things as they stand are not much different than this time yesterday. Multiple teams are interested, and the package should be very good
WITH THE YANKEES WE WERE LOOKING AT (ELITE HITTER W/OUT A DEFENSIVE POSITION) + (STOPGAP 2B WITH MIDDLING DEFENSE HAVING A BREAKOUT YEAR) + #4 STARTER. WITH THE RANGERS, IT’S (ALL-STAR POTENTIAL FIRST BASEMAN) + ???? AND THOSE QUESTION MARKS, SHOULD THE RANGERS BE SERIOUS, HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO OUTDO THE YANKEES OVERALL PACKAGE QUITE EASILY. AND CRIPPLE THEM.
THIS IS TO SAY NOTHING OF HIS ABILITY TO INSPIRE A LEGION
OF FOLLOWERS TO POORLY IMITATE THE NATURAL EROSION OF HIS HAIRLINE IN EXCHANGE FOR FREE HOT DOGS AND UPPER DECK SEATS. OR HIS ABILITY TO GIVE GEORGE STEINBRENNER CHRONIC HEARTBURN, WHICH CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.
HE WAS WHAT EVERY PLAYER WHO STAYS WITH ONE TEAM FOR MOST OF HIS CAREER SHOULD ASPIRE TO BE
NO DISRESPECT TO EDGAR, WHO IS WONDERFUL, BUT HE WAS ALWAYS THE HUMBLE, SOFT-SPOKEN, WISE FELLOW WHO GOT THE HITS AND NOT EXACTLY THE “PERSONALITY”, SO TO SPEAK
OH I AGREE. WITH A PLAYER LIKE BONE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY
TO DIMINISH HIM, OR FOR HIM TO DIMINISH HIMSELF WITH THE FANS DURING A LOW POINT IN HIS SEASON/CAREER. HE ALWAYS ACTED LIKE A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY, NOT SOME PLACED-ON-A-PEDESTAL SPORTS FIGURE. HE WAS ALSO FLAWED, AND HAD NO PROBLEM EMBRACING THOSE FLAWS (BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL) WHICH MADE US LOVE HIM EVEN MORE.
<UPDATE @1:46 PM PT Friday : You step outside for a little while and this happens. Deal is currently off — negotiations continue with the Rangers and Reds being mentioned the most — we’ll keep you post. Weird.
How the hell could he step out for a couple of hrs. I can’t stop staring at my computer screen.
Would be a worthwhile splash to invigorate the ballclub and not have to rely as heaving on Volquez coming back from TJ
Shows the fans they are willing and able to still compete
They can make a real competitive offer 4 guys deep starting with Alsono and go from there. Something like Mesoraco, Alonso, Wood and Francisco, maybe sub in Heisley or go with a 5 player for 2 swap
THE OTHERS HAVE BEEN ENJOYABLE, BUT LESS STRIKING. IT HURTS BECAUSE HE’S ONE OF THE FEW INTERESTING ARMS IN THE ’PEN, BUT HIS HEALTH IS NOT GOOD, NOR LIKELY TO BE, AND AT LEAST HE GOES TO HIS HOMETOWN TEAM WITH A CHANCE TO GO TO THE WS.
BUT TO ADDRESS YOUR QUESTION DIRECTLY, BACK IN ’08 I FELT HORRIBLE BECAUSE WE WERE HAVING A ONCE-IN-A-GENERATION DRAFT FOR FIRST BASEMAN TALENT AND DUE TO A FLUKEY RECORD IN ’07, WE WERE NOT ONLY MISSING OUT ON THAT BUT MAKING A HORRIBLE PANIC MOVE IN SELECTING A RELIEVER WE THOUGHT WE WOULD BE READY IN THE NEAR TERM.

Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
THAT'S WHAT I'M GETTING AT THOUGH
JY - July 9, 2010
Is Montero's bat that much more special than Smoak's?
Chris Hafner - July 9, 2010
Yes
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
Never mind, Graham - now I'm seeing the subthread below.
I have received my necessary batch of education.
Chris Hafner - July 9, 2010
MONTERO'S BAT HAS A CEILING UNLIKE MOST OTHER BATS IN EXISTENCE
JY - July 9, 2010
CORRECT. MOST OTHER BATS IN EXISTENCE HAVE WINGS.
A SELECT FEW HAVE HANDLES WITH KNOBS, BUT SURPRISINGLY NO HINGES.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
SOME OF THEM HAVE AXE HANDLES BUT EVERYONE IS AFRAID TO USE THEM
JY - July 9, 2010
EXCEPT FOR BALD MEN WITH A PENCHANT FOR FISHING ON TELEVISION
WHILE SITTING IN THE SPORTING GOODS SECTION.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
ALSO GRABBING THE ASS OF OVERRATED LOCAL UTILITY PLAYERS
JY - July 9, 2010
THIS IS TO SAY NOTHING OF HIS ABILITY TO INSPIRE A LEGION
OF FOLLOWERS TO POORLY IMITATE THE NATURAL EROSION OF HIS HAIRLINE IN EXCHANGE FOR FREE HOT DOGS AND UPPER DECK SEATS. OR HIS ABILITY TO GIVE GEORGE STEINBRENNER CHRONIC HEARTBURN, WHICH CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
HE WAS WHAT EVERY PLAYER WHO STAYS WITH ONE TEAM FOR MOST OF HIS CAREER SHOULD ASPIRE TO BE
NO DISRESPECT TO EDGAR, WHO IS WONDERFUL, BUT HE WAS ALWAYS THE HUMBLE, SOFT-SPOKEN, WISE FELLOW WHO GOT THE HITS AND NOT EXACTLY THE “PERSONALITY”, SO TO SPEAK
JY - July 9, 2010
HE WAS ALSO FLAWED, AND HAD NO PROBLEM EMBRACING THOSE FLAWS (BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL) WHICH MADE US LOVE HIM EVEN MORE.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
Good defense makes me think Z likes him better.
the other side - July 9, 2010
It's first base, not sure it matters too much
Besides, big bats make everyone else better – pitchers have to work harder.
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
Well three team trade then.
the other side - July 9, 2010
I want to have a guy who can hit the shit out of the ball
I need some variety. All these no hit all glove guys are getting repetitive.
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
Smoak is definitely not a no-hit guy
He can hit. He just doesn’t have Montero’s gigantic power
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
How about his ability to switch hit given Safeco?
abender20 - July 9, 2010
Shrug
That helps him some but Montero would be fine in Safeco too
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
450 feet is out anywhere, right?
abender20 - July 9, 2010
I want either. I just need somebody.
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
Is there concerns about his ability to hit for power?
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
For normal power, no.
For big power, there’s some doubt.
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
k
So we are thinking he could do something like 280/360/490 plus above average defense or something like that?
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
Yup.
Could even hit for some more power down the road.
Dude has massive raw power.
Frederick0220 - July 9, 2010
And Montero is more like 290/340/510?
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
More power, more walks. Probably
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
That sounds pretty nice
Edgar for Pres - July 9, 2010
I think the prognosis is more along the lines of
a Mark Teixeira/Edgar Martinez hybrid. The guy has truly plus-plus plate discipline.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
I remember hearing John Olerude as a comp when he was first drafted.
Smoak that is.
Goose - July 9, 2010
Right.
Smooth, masterful strike-zone control and high BA. Power to come, peak in the 30’s probably.
Combined with Ole’s glove and you’ve got yourself a potential MVP candidate.
misterjonez - July 9, 2010
This.
Frederick0220 - July 9, 2010
Please refrain from...
Ahh fuck it.
wyte_lightning - July 9, 2010

Can't we just combine Montero's bat with Smoak's defense and switch-hitting-ness and be done with it?
lailaihei - July 9, 2010
The difference in the bats isn't as great as it looks. Smoak is an excellent hitter.
Kenneth Arthur - July 9, 2010

seattlesundevil - July 9, 2010
I still think the best overall fit is Cinci
Cinci has expendable pieces
Would be a worthwhile splash to invigorate the ballclub and not have to rely as heaving on Volquez coming back from TJ
Shows the fans they are willing and able to still compete
They can make a real competitive offer 4 guys deep starting with Alsono and go from there. Something like Mesoraco, Alonso, Wood and Francisco, maybe sub in Heisley or go with a 5 player for 2 swap
laxtonto - July 9, 2010

Eyeball Kid - July 9, 2010
I don't prescribe to the fill one hole on the MLB roster to open another concept
laxtonto - July 9, 2010
I wouldn't give up Smoak if I were the Rangers
The only deal for an elite prospect that makes any real sense is… Montero.
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
that is what I am thing to
the problem is I might be Montero + meh.
So at what point do you take a deal like Texas did with Texieria and trust your scouts instead of getting that 1 guy?
laxtonto - July 9, 2010
I don't think I do if that Yankees deal is on the table
I am fine with trades for scattered players, but in this case the central core of elite talent needs shoring up.
Graham MacAree - July 9, 2010
Wrong.

JY - July 9, 2010
I'm just too excited to think right now.
Jay, honestly, you couldn’t have ever imagined Smoak. Right? You like?
Kenneth Arthur - July 9, 2010
INITIALLY, I COULDN'T HAVE IMAGINED MONTERO
THIS SORT OF REDEEMS THAT.
JY - July 9, 2010
Its incredible to think that in some crazy fashion Z got Smoak and three others out of seemingly thin air and a thin farm system from last season.
You just can’t fathom getting those great players selected in the draft – once they’re snagged and signed, wait 6+ years. Awesome.
I didn’t think Montero was possible either until two weeks ago. I didn’t think Smoak was possible until 10 minutes ago.
Kenneth Arthur - July 9, 2010
I DON'T THINK THAT Z WAS LOOKING AT THE COMPENSATION DRAFT PICKS IN THE FIRST PLACE
IT WAS A RUSE. A SMOAK-SCREEN, IF YOU WILL.
