Those Poor, Poor New York Yankees

Rosenthal, now:

#Yankees livid with #Mariners. Believed they had deal, then M's took it to #Rangers saying put Smoak in and Lee is yours... #MLB
...
#Rangers
jumped. Adams' ankle injury was excuse for M's to back out. "You just don't do business that way," one Yankee official said. #MLB

History:

Yankees sign David Wells
...
The team formally announced the signing of left-hander David Wells to a $7 million, two-year contract.
...
Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo, who had a handshake agreement with Wells three weeks ago, called the pitcher's explanation for backing out "wishy-washy."

Business is business, and nothing's ever done until there's ink down on paper. Deal with it.

I'm just so dreadfully sorry that you have to live with Javier Vazquez as your #5 starter. Life isn't fair.

suck it New York
AL West high five.

Enemy of my enemies and what not…

Suck it, Yankee motherbitches. Suck it hard.

Great play, M’s, using them to draw out Smoak.

I think Michael Scott calls this a win-win-win-(win).

Why you hate the Yankees? I would think strengthening the Rangers is worse than

strengthening the Yankees from the Mariners perspective. The Yankees HASN’T been our rival since 2001. We have been so bad to care about the Yankees winning their 27th or 28th.

Why should we help them do it though?
This year doesn't matter anymore, competitively.

For 2011 and beyond we’ve weakened the Rangers, not strengthened them.

Mmm naw fuck em I say
Yup

Well hello Gabe Newell.
The last thing I ever expected to see in this thread would be Gabe Newell.
Last thing?

There was tranny porn in a thread the other day.

Yeah, been there done that.
I vote this joke gets killed

So BrianL can move on.

The Yankees are unhappy?

The Mariners had something to do with it?

I AM DELIGHTED.

NO ONE SAYS NO TO THE YANKEES.
its not like NY won't be able to sign Lee in the offseason

world series grubbing bitches

I already planned on rooting for Texas in the playoffs this year

and now they have Cliff Lee.

Brian Cashman isn't going to do business with Jack Z for a while.

To be honest, I would take the Yankees deal. Even if Adams turns out to be damaged good, Montero + McAlister > Smoak + the 3, and throwing in 2.5M + Mark Lowe. Not high on Lowe, but the 2.5M basically amounts to the value of a 1st round sandwich pick. Well, still happy about what we got for Lee. I like this better than Hicks / Ramos. Smoak fits our park better than Montero, and you have your 1B for the present and future, where as Montero will take time to get used to 1B. I am still pretty happy.

Brian Cashman will do a deal with Jack Z the next time he feels the trade will improve the Yankees.
No, this isn't highschool
Smoak is good

His wOBAr is 350 and I hear that that’s great

Amazing nobody is debating whether either is a fair deal for Lee.

We’re instead debating the finer points of which deal was better. I’m just amazed that anybody would offer their arguably #1 prospects for a few months of Lee. A few months ago I’d have called you nucking futs if you said this would happen.

Now, the gritty:

Smoak = Montero – Even if you think Montero is a better bat, no way he out duels Smoak in defense, base running, and the switch handedness is cool. Overall value, I think, puts them roughly equal.

Beavan = McAllister – Right now anyway. McAllister is not sexy. Beavan appears to have been messed with. I don’t think McAllister can improve much more than he is but Beavan probably can. Still, for now, they’re equal.

Adams = Lawson – Who cares about either.

Now the rest.

Lueke = Lowe – I know we love Mark Lowe and he’s been a good story, but with his back surgery and his elbow history how much more does he have? Lueke has legit stuff.

So the only bit that seems to be a stick in the craw is the 2.5 million. If cash is the only real difference in the deals, I’m not worried about it. Obviously New York doesn’t need us to throw in cash. Still, it IS a difference between the deals, even if the difference is, for all intents and purposes related to the playing field, irrelevant. Yes, it SHOULD net us a better haul, but it didn’t. I’m not going to cry my eyes out over it.

Plus, Texas won't have Smoak on their team for the next 6+ years.
Lueke > Lowe?

Lowe is broken right now and disc injuries are brutal, so you could say this.

I could. But until Lowe demonstrates he's done, it's premature. Also, Lueke may not be as good as reported.

For now, they’re equal based on what I know now. The rest is arguing from ignorance.

Fair enough.

All things considered approximately equal.

That's how I see it. The only unequivical point is the cash.

Which I care absolutely nothing about, even if it should be an important factor in the return.

In the long run 2.5 mil isn't that much in MLB terms.

If it got the deal done then so be it.

It IS still a factor to consider.

Typically when you send money you SHOULD get better returns. Not always great, but better. Since the deals are, in my mind, equal, the 2.5 million IS a factor that has to be considered.

Still, I don’t care about it, but I understand if people do.

I think most people are happy for what Jack Z got for Lee.

I think people are just debating whether this is better than the Yankees deal. Personally, I didn’t think it was, but not that big of a difference. You compared to what Cleveland got when they traded CC Sabathia couple years ago on July 7. I think Jack Z did much better, as Justin Smoak > Matt Laporta. I think that’s the bench mark I would use to compare the value in what we got for Lee.

I don't like comparing unrelated trades.

Yeah, I know Sabathia was a big pitcher traded in the middle of a season and so’s Lee, but the people involved are different (sort of). We don’t know what kind of market was open for Sabathia aside from the deal that came through. In this case, it looked like a heated and competitive market for Cliff Lee, which is fascinating.

Yankee’s in, Yankee’s out, Rangers in, Yankee’s pissed. This has been a very interesting day of baseball.

Lee

You guys got more for 1/2 year of lee than we did for 1 1/2.

Knapp, Donald, Carrasco, and Marson.

Hmm… have to think about that one.

You don't build the best team in baseball by holding grudges.
Whatever. I hope they choke to death on A-rod's rancid ejaculate.

A team that does whatever it can to take advantage of every other team can go fuck themselves.

He left a bad taste in your mouth huh?
Rancid ejaculate will do that.
I'm tempted to put that in my signature.

Rancid ejaculate will to that.

Awesome little subthread here.

SBNation needs mobile rec-ing if only for this.

I'm no Yankees apologist, but isn't doing

“whatever it can to take advantage of every other team” exactly what every MLB team should try to do? Come to think of it, I wish the Mariners would do this more often.

Provided you don't whine like a little bitch when it's done to you, then yes.
Theres a twisted sick part of me that feels the BEST part of this deal

was not aquiring Smoak, but making the Yankees think they had Lee and then pulling him away at the last second. I hope Lee destroys the Yankees in the ALCS.

How about in the ALDS?

No need for the yankees to go all the way to the ALCS

In a seven game series, there's a chance that the Yanks get beat by Lee 3 times.

That would be the ultimate zing.

No need for for the Rangers to go World Series
Having time to digest

I’m a bit disappointed, not because I think the Yankees’ package was better, but because when news broke of the Rangers getting involved, I thought we’d get more than Smoak plus Beavan, Lueke, and whatever the other kid’s name is.

I can deal with the cash (it’s not my money), but losing Lowe isn’t great.

The fact that Yankees don’t get Lee makes this a win for me.

Do we even know if that was the complete deal with the Yankees?
I think so
I sure as hell don't
I don't think so

But, we’ll never know the full extent of the deal.

WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT THE YANKEES NOT GETTING LEE WHEN WE POSSIBLY TOOK LESS TO IMPROVE THE ONLY TEAM THAT IS HISTORICALLY MORE INEPT THAN WE ARE????
Possibly is a big word.

Having said that, I was pretty stoked when we won the West before the Rangers, and sad when the Rangers won the West for the first time. They can fuck themselves.

Makes the trade even better. Boo fucking hoo, cocksuckers.
My feelings exactly.

You have the best record in baseball and you will probably win the WS anyway.

I think the Yankees knew Cliff Lee can beat them twice in a 7 game series,

That’s pretty big. But Texas still has to win 2 other games. But Cliff Lee just drastically increase their chance in a 7 game series. Now, if it’s a 5 game series, Cliff Lee winning 2 games is even bigger. That’s why the yankees are very pissed.

In the ALCS, the Rangers could potentially start Lee in games 1, 4, and 7.

That’s riding him pretty hard, but I don’t think Cliff F Lee would have it any other way.

I'm glad it was you guys and not the Yankees.
By you guys I mean the Rangers...

…seems like a good deal for the Ms.

Honestly I don't think either deal was close to worth what they are getting.

We are just all hot and bothered because it look like the Yankees deal was better even though we don’t know all the details.

This reminds me of when the yankees complained of collusion when Bartolo Colon was sent to Montreal rather than NY.

collusion

This whole thing would have been better as an hour long ESPN special
All that's missing is a bitter/vindictive Steinbrenner open letter
Someone needs to pull out the We're-on-a-boat gif
ALL NIGHT SPECIAL ON YES!
I can't wait for the nasty, emotional letter in Comic Sans

Kiss my ass, Yankees. Not on this side, not on that side, but right in ze middle.

Gilbert can bend down and kiss my ass. What a dickface, that guy.
HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS ITS MAGICMIKE23

This is why the yankees are great, but hated lol

Also the reason why rangers havent made the playoffs in a decade.

I find it hard to believe a montero, adams, mcallister offer couldnt be topped. Rangers have more than enough depth to pull it off.

God dammit
he appears to be as well liked there as he is here
Good

That guy made my blood boil

Please capitalize.
Oh, thank you for contributing to the discussion!
These are just LL's rules.
I ruled your mom last night.
Necrophilia is illegal but I admire your tenacity
Just put her back when you're done is all I ask
He made this happen.
Did he get banned here?

I don’t recall him being one to give up on posting voluntarily.

I sure hope so.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him around.

Pretty sure he did
Hahaha Yankees can suck it.
Here's the tweet of the day. From Larry Stone, of course.
StoneLarry Inside sources say the Mariners are holding out for Pokey Reese about 2 hours ago via TweetDeck
I'm confused,

is this deal better that the one we had before?

The one you get is always better than the one that you didn't get
Depends on who you favor more: Montero or Smoak
Dave Cameron says yes, Graham and Jeff Nye say no. All depends on whether you value Montero more highly than Smoak.
And there will never be definitive word that the Yankees deal was a done deal. It's not in any GM or FO's interest to let that get out.
It's hypothetical

Again, I don’t think we’ve got a clue if that was the full deal.

After Jack Z backed out of conversations, was their offer of Montero still on the table?

Or did Jack have to make something happen with Texas because the Yankees no longer wanted to negotiate? Couple of questions that I hope are answered in the coming days

Sounds like Z really wanted Justin Smoak.

Interesting that he mentions about how you already know what GMs are going to offer in terms of prospects after the phone calls you have. And yet, Daniels turns around and offers Smoak instead today.

Z: "Every deal should stand alone".

“What happens a year ago or 6 months ago has no relationship to what happens in this deal.”

I love this man.

So Smoak wasn't on the table before today?
A question was asked of Z whether if Smoak was available yesterday if the deal would have been done then.

Jack said “Yes”. So the implication is that Smoak wasn’t on the table until now.

Wow, he is looking kind of brilliant to me now.

Sounds like he wanted Smoak (however controversial that may be) and did what he had to to get him. I agree with Divish, wouldn’t want to play poker with him.

Well, I mean, if you're given the choice of Smoak or someone else's offer that isn't as good

It’s an easy decision to make. I don’t know if he REALLY wanted Smoak, I think he just REALLY wanted Smoak from the Rangers.

Could be.

Either way we got to see him pitch for a half of a season AND we got better stiff back. Confidence restored.

Smoak fills a huge hole.

Montero would also fill that hole, but with questions that make it harder (I’m guessing) to manage the roster, as well as no guarantee he succeeds in the new spot. It wouldn’t be a shock if they wanted Smoak over Montero even if Montero is destined to be better. Now he can simply attack catcher separately.

Major league ready, cost controlled first baseman. That’s pretty great.

I agree.

The other factors on Montero is that he doesn’t have a position. If he doesn’t stick at catcher long term, he has to learn first base or just become a DH, which okay whatever. But he’s also not major league ready. Smoak is going to help this team starting tomorrow. Montero not for another year or two.

I think we’re really grasping at straws, though, on this debate of Montero vs. Smoak. In my opinion, they’re both valuable as all fuck and for a long time. It’s about equal in terms of value both near and long term. Why quibble? It’s a good deal.

Montero also is characterized as not being naturally athletic.

I really didn’t like the sound of this, coupled with him not having much potential to help you defensively. Is he already slow, at 20, fit only to DH?

I have to go off what I read and hear.

But it doesn’t look like he’ll stick at catcher, and his only other viable position is first base. He does not appear to have a lot of speed. DH, of course is ANYBODY’S option.

Now we'll never deal with the Yankees again...
Yes, yes we will.
Z's shirt collar is half hanging out of his jacket. This drives me crazy.
He had to dress quickly

Because he just got done butt fucking the Yankees

True, but a man of his stature should really take the .005 seconds it takes to check that kind of thing.
Do you really take off your shirt to fuck the Yankees in the ass?
The shirt can hang in the way
Z just got asked about Lee's comment about a long term deal

He smirked, then dodged the question, but defends Lee’s comments from the time he got traded to the Mariners to now.

Admits that they did talk to Lee about extension, but doesn’t go into details. Mentions Lee’s injury in Spring Training. Says it would have been difficult to get a deal done.

Mariners Burn Yankees, Get Smoak'd.

A-Rod Turns to Wang for Comfort.

Too bad Phil Coke still isn't on the team.

Could have added another joke there.

Well... neither is Wang to be fair.
Oh yeah. Forgot about that.
Wang is a National now, isn't he?
Yes. Hasn't pitched yet.
Woah. Did not know that.
I would like to launch a preemptive tactical nuclear strike on the LL Rangers Bandwagon.
Maybe not the whole team, but I am fully on the bandwagon of one particular Rangers player.

Fuck I’ll drive the damn thing.

Josh Hamilton appreciates your support
I will have Jeff shoot you.
I hope they win it all but Michael Young dies in the process.

Because fuck Michael Young.

Cliff Lee is supposed to be talking on the presser soon.

Ooh boy!

Lee: "The weather was just starting to get nice, but now I'm gone".
Does this mean Lee is going to start using cocaine :(
With two really good sources I see no other option
He'll be smiling even more!!
Lee basically admits that he was paying attention to the news on him being traded.

Kicks the shit out of the cliche’s we always hear from players who say “y’know, I don’t pay attention that kind of thing”. Liars.

Lee just got asked if he was anxious about becoming a Yankee when he heard.

He just said “Ifs and buts, whatever!”

For a really quick interview and without much prep time, Cliff answered questions well.

He basically said that it looked like he was a Yankee but he’s a Ranger now. He didn’t have any particular excitement one way or the other, he’s just happy to go to a team that wants him. He definitely tried to make sure that everybody knows that becoming a Yankee wasn’t a big deal to him, even if one of his old buddies (Sabathia) pitches for them.

God speed, Cliff. I’ll be adoring watching you kick the everloving crap out of the Yanks again in the post season.

Lee doesn't know cliches

because Lee doesn’t read.

Z just called Lawson a scrappy gamer.

So he’ll probably make the roster next year.

Trade him to the Royals!

And Cliff Lee just finished the presser. Bye Cliff. :(

Z also said Pineda could pitch in Seattle this year.
Well, that was already speculated.

September call up and all.

Still, it's not bad news.
Also not surprising news.
When rosters expand.
Fuck

He’s gone. Thats kind of sinking in now…

So do we trust in Z again?
I'm coming around. I've gotten over the Lowe trade. My guess is he's really broken.

Smoak sounds awesome.

I don't know yet.

Brett? Sec108? Is the sign returning?

Isn't up to me as I will not be back to Safeco until October.

I quit smoking in April though so tough call.

Yes.

He’s not the perfect GM, but on the whole he’s done a he’ll of a job.

He'll? Stupid iPhone. Tries to edit out my swear words.
Yep, I mean remember 2008? That was only 2 seasons ago.
When we traded him to the organization that I hate more than any other in sports (thought we traded) I was just so happy to Montero that I let by-gones be by-gones.

The fact that we ended up getting one of my favorite players and pissed off the Yankees.. Just how the fuck do you make me so happy Jack?

Awwwwww

that’s so sad.

Hey Yanks...

Shut up and go do a deal for Oswalt or Lilly or someone else and leave us alone. I personally would have loved if this deal happened in a couple more days, just so Cliff could have beat you one more time in an M’s uniform.

Since when is leverage bad business?

This is just New York taking there LeBron frustrations out on us. Losers.

Did everyone get a warning?

Cause I hadn’t even posted yet. Although I solemnly pledge to avoid being a twat.

I had no idea

Why the Yanks were in it in the first place really, their odds of making the playoffs with their current roster is already crazy good, and while Lee certainly help their chances in the playoffs somewhat, how much so seem to be vastly overrated. shit can always happen in the playoffs, While Jeff Weaver + Jeff Suppan can also dominate you.

Meanwhile, their core is aging and the last thing they really want to do is to trade away a guy that might be a legitimate piece of the next one.

Fuck 'em. Just fuck 'em.
