Mariners Send Rob Johnson South, Recall Adam Moore

Well I wasn't really expecting this:

Hearing that Adam Moore will be called up tomorrow. Rob Johnson to Tacoma.

Granted, this'll only last for a month, if that, but if I'm interpreting this correctly, it's a pretty big statement. It also explains why Josh Bard has caught two of Felix's last three starts. Bard caught on July 20th, then caught Felix on July 21st. Bard also caught on July 30th, then caught Felix on July 31st. Unless Johnson was dealing with something minor that didn't leak to the media, the Mariners made the deliberate decision to have him sit out a couple Felix Days. That's significant.

I forgot who it was that pointed out that the Mariners haven't spoken as glowingly of Johnson this year as they did in 2009, but it seems to be true, and this may be the latest indication that they're growing increasingly frustrated. Johnson's sitting on a .574 OPS, and while his throwing arm has been okay, he leads the league in passed balls and has allowed an additional 23 wild pitches. Almost everything about Johnson has been a disappointment this year - even his walk rate, which has dropped to 7.6% since early May after an encouraging start. Pitchers figured out how bad he is, just as they did ages ago with Jack Wilson.

Is Adam Moore the savior? Doubt it. He's had his defensive problems, too. He looked like total crap with Seattle before he got hurt. He has hit fairly well with Tacoma, though, with a double and a homer just yesterday, so, what the hell? What's the harm? Moore gets a confidence boost from having earned another chance, and Rob Johnson learns that he can't just rest on his reputation. His reputation has changed a little bit.

I could be making entirely too much of one simple, short-term transaction, but: Rob Johnson had a shot to be the Mariners' catcher of the future. He couldn't take advantage, so now it looks like he'll have to wait his turn for seconds while Moore gets a go. I don't think anybody sees Moore as some future superstar, but I also don't think anybody wanted him to stay trapped behind Johnson without ever getting a chance. He is at least as talented. Time for him to show that he might have a little bit more.

Star-divide

If Michael Pineda falls in love with Rob Johnson, I quit.

Moore won't be a superstar,

but he at least has a chance to be league average, which would be saying something for the M’s.

Yell at me if I thinking to crazily, but could Rob Johnson be in AAA just to catch Pineda?
too*
THIS IS ME YELLING AT YOU
Well its in all caps so I assumed as much.
BLAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH NOOOOOO!

(I hope the yelling tone came across well) (I hope you’re thinking crazily, really.)

They want to give Moore a shot, and Johnson has options left.

I’m going to assume it’s that simple until something shows me differently.

Pineda hasn't had much practice at overcoming wild pitches

I’m sure Rob can teach him a thing or two.

For the first time in weeks I actually just experienced some emotion about this team
I forgot we had a team.
Well, you and I do

apparently, they are good

I am being talked into being a Giants fan because I think it's funny when the pitchers hit and hey, Buster Posey!
I agree with this
Travis Ishikawa has a Japanese name
Turd Ferguson has a funny name.
And is from Seattle.
That's Tim Lincecum you're thinking of
Never heard of him but he sounds like a queer.
Nah, queers have better haircuts.
Or at least more highlights.
He's a goddamn hippie!
Makes sense because he got arrested with maryjane, but why was that not made much more public?
The Giants are my NL team.
I live in a National League city that is not San Francisco
I don't live in San Francisco, but some of my family is from the San Francisco area.

Plus they’re good. And one of their team colors is orange. I like the color orange.

Closet Orioles fan...
I'm so very sorry

for you and your closet.

I haven't watched more than 2 innings since May
I still enjoy reading Matthew's report cards though
Best news Ive heard all week

even though the season has been in the tank since the end of April, its comforting to see some of the prospects getting their hacks in, whether they succeed or not. Pineda and Ackley next?

Please can we not call Michael Pineda up just yet
I don't mind if Ackely, Pineda, etc get a cup of joe in September.

But I don’t want them called up now and starting everyday (or every five days). Let them do what they need to do in AAA, and see where we are in ST next year.

Let them get through the playoffs with Tacoma and then get token appearances at the end of September.
Exactly.

Let them at least enjoy the playoffs, it might be the last time they see them for a while.

Z is on record saying "Ackley end it in Triple A"

But his full statement is kind of ambiguous.

I think he was talking about how impressive it was to be drafted and work your way up to AAA in one year.
Here's the full quote
“This is good for Ackley,” Zduriencik said. “When you consider this is July 23, he didn’t sign till August 17 of a year ago, he hasn’t even been in pro ball for a complete year. This is his first touch of professional baseball and he is going to end it in Triple-A. I think that says an awful lot about him.”

I thought it meant AAA was the end of the line for him this year, but it could be that.

Or he will end his professional baseball career in AAA
Apparently Z is going to murder him after the last game of the AAA season?

Just for fun I guess?

Why not at this point?

GO MARINERS!

People really need to stop misusing this quote, that's not what he was saying at all.
"and he is going to end it in Triple-A"

I know it’s not exactly what he meant, but the quote does lend itself to misinterpretation.

It's not very well worded, I'll admit.

But if you’re reading that outside of the context of an organization that has rushed prospects in the past, it’s pretty clear that the meaning is “it’s impressive that this kid has gotten as far as AAA in his first pro season.”

Agreed.

That’s why I hate quotes sometimes.

YES YES YES GOD YES
WHO IS STILL WEARING PANTS
PANTS ARE OFF AND WE ARE AT FAP FACTOR 5
FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP
I am in a public place :(
Hasn't stopped me before :D
I am at my grandparent's house.
So I most definitely am.
FUCK IT
HELLO GRANDMA!!!
With dementia setting in, who's to say what really happened?
Hope Grandma left her dentures out.
I share whatever opinion Matthew has on this transaction
After much thought I will mildly disagree with whatever Dave says
Via text:
Johnson, moore. I’m actually surprised!
That is not really an opinion
I really need to find out how I feel about this
I think he feels all right
Via text:
I am surprised!
Well that helped nothing
How surprising
Today seems to be full of surprises
Somewhat pleasing surprises
I hope Moore grabs this opportunity by the balls.
I hope Moore can catch some balls.
I kind of miss Joh
I was hoping for a Moore demonstrative statement from you
I forgot the password to my "I Lick Squirrels" account.
I'm Adamed if I do and I'm Adamed if I don't.
Quick, someone register "I'm NOT Johnson."
Moore fills a hole after Johnson's balls dropped.
I've got nothing...
Here's some Moore
So, you feel Rob'd?
Rob Johnson had a shot to be the Mariners' catcher of the future?

This doesn’t seem to me to be a very promising future if so, considering that his realistic ceiling was somewhere in the Josh Bard/Tom Lampkin realm of “not a complete waste of bench space as a backup, but not very good as a starter”.

Trade for Montero!
I'm fairly confident you're joking, but also probably not a catcher of the future for anyone.

I wonder what it’d take to pry Ramos away from the Nationals.

Actually, this probably skates a little too close to rosterbation, sorry.

I’m used to being able to delete my comments!

Please ignore.

DH of the future.
I wonder if David Aardsma is a better pitcher than Matt Capps
He reminds me of Bobby Jenks.
Fat? Because they aren't similar pitchers at all.
And they've got beards.
They both have made-up sounding names?
Matt Capps seems like he should be a starting pitcher
Maybe he meant Miguel Montero?
I'm pretty sure he meant Freddy Montero...
Mitsubishi Montero.

That’s about all we could get out of a Rob Johnson trade…

Adam Moore has looked like shit this year, but I still like his upside and I think he's obviously the better choice over Rob.

I think his bat can play at the .310 wOBA level in the majors, and if we’re lucky he can be maybe be a .320 guy.
I really hope he’s good, because our system is devoid of catchers, and consistently average to above average catchers are not readily available.

The difference between a .310 wOBA and a .320 wOBA is like four runs over the course of a season

I think we can shoot higher than that for his upside.

Isn't that like, 1% of our runs?
In my mind, he's like 40% chance to be at least .310, 15% to be at least .320 for the next few year.

.310 would put him slightly below average, assuming slightly below average defense.
.320 would put him slightly above average, assuming the same.

It’s possible he could reach higher, but his reasonable upside is basically Kurt Suzuki.
And I think about a 60% bust rate sounds about right.

I think there is a 82% chance that pulling numbers out of your ass is pointless.
I bet if I could pull numbers out of my ass I could find an audience online to pay $19.95 a month.
That's retarded.

I wouldn’t pay more than 15.

August 2, 2010 - the day the Rob Johnson passed ball counter moved to Tacoma.
Another day in Mariners history.
You, sir, are correct!
August 18, 2010 - the day that Ichiro played for the Mariners
Another day in Mariners history.
Now they're going to trade him.

Just to make you eat your words.

This is interesting, at minimum.

It could be Moore

MOORE SOUNDS THE SAME AS MORE
You should send the team a memo so they make sure to put that in next year's media pronounciation guide
Think of all the songs they can play as his walk-up music.
Think of all the commercials he can do

Save Moore on car insurance!

If he hits like he has at Tacoma we can go camping with him

and have s’mores

Are you in the Boy Souts?

cause that sounds scary!

I'm surprised but from Drayer, sounds like Rob isn't.

Johnson, who has struggled both offensively and defensively this year following three off season surgeries told me recently that the writing was on the wall. “I am not hitting and Adam deserves to come up,” he said after watching Josh Bard catch four out of five games on the last roadtrip. “If it happens I will go down there and work.”

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO NICE ROB JOHNSON.
He's secretly plotting the death of Adam Moore.
I don't like Rob Johnson the player,

but that’s a pretty honest and nice thing of him to say.

He really is a nice guy.
This should be Great News.
Awesome news, no more Rob Johnson!
Sweet, now I can resurrect my catcher's interference drinking game!
Are you serous?

You can’t possibly drink very much with that game.

With Adam Moore catching we can
