Remember this? Now that the Mariners are completely out of it and the playoff picture has begun to take shape, I wanted to try again, at a later time with a slightly different approach.
My girlfriend is from Minnesota, they’re in a different division, they have likable players, etc.
As much as I love Cliff Lee, I still can’t bring myself to root for the Rangers. Unless they play the Yankees in the playoffs. I’ll do it, but I won’t like it.
I was in Vegas back in February and locked in 40:1 odds on the Reds to win the WS. It was before the casinos were releasing their Over/Unders, so futures were my only option for baseball betting.
I laid down $5 on both the Reds and Brewers. Since the Reds are still in it, I"m pulling hard for Dusty’s crew.
I have no emotional investment, but it’d be sweet if the $5 bet I laid down on a whim at New York New York ended up paying for my next flight to Vegas.
I know theres alot of hate for them in the non Boston area...
But I gotta go with the Red Sox. I’m a huge Big Papi fan, and I also like guys such as Youk, Beltre, and Pedroia. Probably also helps that they are the Yankees’ chief rival, and boy do I despise the Yankees.
I would be fine with the Padres, Reds, Twins or Braves.
More bearable teams are competing this year than usual. I chose the Braves, mostly because I think it’d be cool for Bobby Cox to go out with a World Series championship (would have been cooler if Chipper were still around so they could go out together). Bobby Cox is a crotchety old man and for some reason I’ve always liked him.
Quality team and a nice new ballpark. Plus a strong representative of the AL Central. Plus having Jim Thome around doesn’t hurt either!
I’m really impressed with the way the Rangers organization is shaping up…but them reaching the World Series means the number of World Series-less franchises drops. I’m not quite ready to go all in on the Rangers, but they have a really fun team to watch and it would not surprise me if they go all the way. Plus, Cliff Lee!
I like the Padres, but it’s hard for me to look at them without thinking that it could’ve and should’ve seriously been us.
Can’t get real excited about any other team this year. The Rays were fun to get behind in 2008, but nobody is getting my juices flowing in 2010. I am sure once the playoffs are set, there will be a team I choose to root for.
But you really can’t go wrong with Cincinnati or San Diego. I have a feeling St. Louis and Philadelphia will be little whores and ruin everything though.
If Burnett and Sabathia dominate the playoffs and the offense steamrolls opposing pitchers, maybe they’ll decide that signing Cliff Lee just isn’t necessary.
I rooted pretty hard for the Angels back in ’02 and almost immediately regretted it when they won…any team who wins it will become instantly unlikeable in my book, as they are no longer underdogs.
My only emotional investment remains the Mariners so I suspect they’re the only ones that would be able to break that trend…
Stickin' with the Reds baby

Bavasi factor
Die Reds, Die.
CMC_Stags - August 26, 2010
And this comes from someone who went to a couple games at Riverfront every summer in the early to mid 90s.
CMC_Stags - August 26, 2010
And yeah...
I have no emotional investment, but it’d be sweet if the $5 bet I laid down on a whim at New York New York ended up paying for my next flight to Vegas.
slamcactus - August 26, 2010
That's German for "The Reds, The."
slamcactus - August 26, 2010
Rangers!
Cliff Lee I miss you!
Ballard Erik - August 26, 2010
They should have just put Cliff Lee down as one of the options...
Ike Clanton - August 26, 2010
Padres
Because it would be hilarious
BaronVonBullshit - August 26, 2010
For sure.
They are my favorite NL team.
Ballard Erik - August 26, 2010
Before Texas pulled away with it I was rooting for an A's/Padres World Series
It would have been amazing
BaronVonBullshit - August 26, 2010
But, RIVALRY!
d0nkey - August 26, 2010
I know theres alot of hate for them in the non Boston area...
But I gotta go with the Red Sox. I’m a huge Big Papi fan, and I also like guys such as Youk, Beltre, and Pedroia. Probably also helps that they are the Yankees’ chief rival, and boy do I despise the Yankees.
Patrick Stites - August 26, 2010
As I think I've said before, few people hate the Red Sox
Theo does a good job of maximizing their advantages and they have built a good team and org.
It’s the fact that the Red Sox might just have the most annoying fan base in MLB that causes people to hate Red Sox fans.
CMC_Stags - August 26, 2010
Well I suppose thats true.
But Ive seen far too many hate the team because of the fans. I personally would not mind if the Yanks and Sox fans would just disappear.
Patrick Stites - August 26, 2010
Giants
Because I live in San Francisco.
Who the hell voted Yankees?
Joe Metro - August 26, 2010
Probably somebody who is rooting for them the most to win the World Series.
Matthew - August 26, 2010
Boy you sure got me
Joe Metro - August 26, 2010
People that need to be drawn and quartered.
Faux - August 26, 2010
Rangers
Although technically I’m not rooting for the team, I’m just rooting for Cliff Lee.
MarioMangler - August 26, 2010
Giants.
Panda, Posey, Lincecum, and Cain. A bunch of players that I really like.
Plus SF is a pretty sweet city.
seiferguy - August 26, 2010
Cliff Lee deserves a ring
Bearskin Rugburn - August 26, 2010
I'll give him one
Griffin Cooper - August 26, 2010
Do you live in Iowa?
Bearskin Rugburn - August 26, 2010
He has one, doesn't he?
Phillies?
Thingray - August 26, 2010
Nope.
He was only with Philly last year.
Rachmaninoff - August 26, 2010
Crap, you're right.
Thingray - August 26, 2010
People appear to hate the Dodgers more than the Red Sox.
Interesting.
Aaron Campeau - August 26, 2010
Andre Ethier is awesome.
Besides that, fuck the Dodgers. But fuck the Red Sox more.
Fuckmikereilly - August 26, 2010
I know I do. Old habits die hard.
Sec 108 - August 26, 2010
The Red Sox have a better shot than the Dodgers, who are close to hopeless this year.
yuniform - August 27, 2010
I am going to vote Cardinals

I voted for Twins even though my bandwagon team is the Giants.
Robert - August 26, 2010
How fucking dare you.
Kirk - August 26, 2010
Put Boston soley because of Adrian.
bagsflyfree - August 26, 2010
Giants, they're my guilt-free NL team.
If I’ve got to pull for an AL team though, it’s the Twins.
Rachmaninoff - August 26, 2010
I like the Twins

PADRES FEVER BABY!
joof - August 26, 2010
While it'd be nice for Cliff Lee to win, the Rangers can't get a title before we do.
Let’s go Reds and keep intact the Futile Three.
shinallsrevenge - August 26, 2010
Check that, the Rangers can't go to the WS before we do.
shinallsrevenge - August 26, 2010
Still pulling for the Twins.
Goose - August 26, 2010
For the record, I voted Padres, but absolutely love Jim Thome
Jeff Sullivan - August 26, 2010
Wow...certainly can't tell from the comments that the Rays are winning this thing.
Guess their fans are rather silent this year.
ralphie81 - August 26, 2010
I can't believe the Rangers are this close to the top
Do you really want to hear the words “Michael Young, World Series MVP”?
Fuckmikereilly - August 26, 2010
I live in the Bay Area, so San Francisco...
But you really can’t go wrong with Cincinnati or San Diego. I have a feeling St. Louis and Philadelphia will be little whores and ruin everything though.

Recently changed my mind and picked the yankees.
If Burnett and Sabathia dominate the playoffs and the offense steamrolls opposing pitchers, maybe they’ll decide that signing Cliff Lee just isn’t necessary.

Deal with the Devil and you're gonna get burned.
Decatur - August 27, 2010
Basically I'll just root for the small timers whoever they happen to be.
Twins, Pads, Rockies, I don’t care. Just not the usual suspects.
SethGrandpa - August 26, 2010

Omerta - August 26, 2010
I don't think the Marlins or D-Backs ever became hateable
I think the team that wins can’t become a powerhouse. Which is why maybe I shouldn’t root for the Reds. They could be good for a long time.
Fuckmikereilly - August 26, 2010
Padres or Giants would be cool
OlSalty - August 26, 2010
Oh and the Reds
OlSalty - August 26, 2010
Man fuck you
Poochie - August 26, 2010
(Not really the Reds)
OlSalty - August 27, 2010
I previously vote for the Twins, but now it's the Phillies.
I’m a sucker for a feel good story and I want Mike Sweeney to get a ring. Sue me.
truemsfan - August 26, 2010
Rooting for Sweeney and Raul? I can see why you call yourself a True M's Fan.
yuniform - August 27, 2010
Go Pads!
I’m looking forward to going to a playoff game for like $25.
Teej - August 26, 2010
Padres
My hometown.
Also, if they make it to the World Series, they won’t have to get their asses handed to them by juggernaut teams like the first two times they went.
