Pitcher wins!
Eyebrows - August 31, 2010
Felix Hernandez is really good at baseball.
Robert - August 31, 2010
You know, I agree with you.
joof - August 31, 2010
But if we had traded him to Boston last year, we would've received Clay Buchholz and Jed Lowrie + couple other bonafide prospects.
That’d be a very good trade from the Mariners perspective, as Buchholz has developed into an ace this year.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
Felix is Ours and They Can't Have Him
joey90 - August 31, 2010
That's true, and he's the reason I am still watching. But what's wrong with getting Clay Buchholz?
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
He isn't Felix
OceanBird - August 31, 2010
He's also about $10M cheaper than Felix and under club control for another 5 years.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
Felix is better, he is signed for five more years and Felix is Felix.
Kirk - August 31, 2010
I am not disputing Felix is better. But the trade isn't Buchholz for Felix straight up. It's Buchholz + others for Felix.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
Still would not have been worth it.
Kirk - August 31, 2010
And that doesn't even mention the fact that we don't know what was offered.
Kirk - August 31, 2010
Probably only Theo and Jack Z. knew. But it was supposed to be pick 4 out of the top 8 Red Sox prospects at that time, and
both Buchholz and Lowrie were on it. I think Daniel Bard was also on it too.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
Lowrie is bad if I remember correctly, Bard is a reliever, Buchholz is not an ace and none of the are as good as Felix
Kirk - August 31, 2010
Lowrie's been good this year.
But he wasn’t on the purported list anyway.
Teej - August 31, 2010
(in 90 plate appearances, so never mind)
Teej - August 31, 2010
Lowrie has averaged .7 WAR a year over his career.
joof - August 31, 2010
Limited play and all that but yeah.
Kirk - August 31, 2010
Yeah, I just glanced too quickly. My bad.
Not sure if it’s injuries or what, he appears to not have progressed at all in three years.
Teej - August 31, 2010
Wrist injury, mononucleosis
Jeff Sullivan - August 31, 2010
I assume you are referring to the story Baker floated last year (which wasn't verified by anyone at the Boston/SD ends)
of a proposed three-way with the Padres? No Lowrie, btw.
Churchill speculated that if it was true, the package would have been someting like 1 year of Adrian Gonzalez, plus Clay Buchholz, Nick Hagadone and Yamaica Navarro
msb - August 31, 2010
Yup, that was the story. At that time, we didn't know if Felix was going to sign a long term deal here. I am glad they waited
till the off season and signed him. But had he not sign, we might not get that package of return in the off season.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
Felix is under control for another four years and is way better.
It’s OK to pay money for actual superstars. That trade would have been bad.
Teej - August 31, 2010
I really, really don't like your thought processes.
What is to say we would have gotten these things?
Kirk - August 31, 2010
If we had traded Jeremy Reed to Boston we would've received Jon Lester and Jonathan Papelbon.
ThundaPC - August 31, 2010
Holy crap I remember this.
Double06 - August 31, 2010
Ahem.
Gil Meche & Jeremy Reed, for Jon Lester or Jonathan Papelbon, if Finnigan was to be trusted
msb - August 31, 2010
.
“It might be tough to get Lester or Papelbon,” a National League scout said. “Every team who has talked to the Sox about a deal has asked for one of them.”
While the Mariners are said to be more proactive in pushing a trade with Boston, they apparently are down on the Red Sox’s dance card. The Sox, in need of a shortstop as well as a center fielder, are reportedly focused on a multi-player deal with Tampa Bay
msb - August 31, 2010
Where did you hear that? I doubt the Sox would trade Lester or Papelbon at any time during their career. Maybe when Lester was diagnosed with lymph cancer or something?
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
As I said, Finnigan in the Times
here. And as Finnigan quoted, the trade was thought to be unlikely.
msb - August 31, 2010
Fuck that. Felix isn't going anywhere. Shame on you.
Allen Wu - August 31, 2010
Clay Buchholz is not an ace.
Teej - August 31, 2010
Clay Bucholz has pitched like 60 less innings than Felix this year, has been worse, and is two years older than Felix.
joof - August 31, 2010
Shit, I didn't realize he's older than Felix by almost 2 years. Never mind.
brian_sun - August 31, 2010
This has absolutely nothing to do with anything and is a topic that is over a year old and no longer interesting or relevant in any way.
Aaron Campeau - September 1, 2010
You aren't even good at being controversial.
Robert - September 1, 2010
Note: SBN will be down for about half an hour around 11:30 or so
Jeff Sullivan - August 31, 2010
Uh oh. Not good at all.
scooter4 - August 31, 2010
Thanks for heads up Mr.Sullivan.
scooter4 - September 1, 2010
You've only lied to me once before, so I'm going to trust you on this one.
joof - August 31, 2010
We survived
Jeff Sullivan - September 1, 2010
Guess I will be taking lunch early today
d0nkey - September 1, 2010
Wrong 11:30
Jeff Sullivan - September 1, 2010
FUCK MY EYES WHY DIDN'T I SEE THIS BEFORE HAND
Robert - September 1, 2010
I'm surprised the chart didn't go down to 0.1 when the Angels scored
zehavi - August 31, 2010
You should not be.
