I think it has said "Outstanding" since the mid-80s
I’ve seen pictures of Maddux’ and Randy Johnson’s Awards, and they say “Outstanding”. Fenway has plaques for Clemens and Pedro that say “Outstanding” back to 1986, but I don’t know if those are replicas made later. KC has Greinke’s award displayed with their past winners too, though, and they say “Outstanding” all the way back to Saberhagen’s ‘85 award, so unless both are inaccurate replicas, that would put ’84 or ’85 as the year they switched. I don’t think it was a single clear switch, because some older years have “Outstanding” on the award, but I’ve never seen one say “Most Valuable” from the mid-80s on.
"The Outstanding" is probably even more ambiguous than "Most Valuable"

The design change is like moving from Riverfront Stadium to Camden Yards.
diderot - September 17, 2010
Also notice the giant Cy Young hand has changed his grip,
diderot - September 17, 2010
Looks identical.
MT Olson - September 17, 2010
Actually I opened new tabs between and flipped between.
It is identical excluding the better depth perception the new one offers.
MT Olson - September 17, 2010
It appears the award no longer comes with the Asian style plate holder.
44FAN - September 17, 2010
Floyd Bannister was robbed!
Kenneth Arthur - September 17, 2010
Oooh! It is also now available in pewterine!
msb - September 17, 2010
It would be cooler if they took it off of the plaque and instead mounted it on a staff, like a fucking Trident of Pitching.
RustyJohn - September 17, 2010
This should work in Feilx' favor right?
I mean, they specifically changed it from most valuable to stress the team-independence of the award.
Bearskin Rugburn - September 17, 2010
I wonder if it did make a fundamental difference because you couldnt get much more different than LaMarr Hoyt and Zack Greinke.
24-10!
Kenneth Arthur - September 17, 2010
Lamarr Hoyt's award should be taken away since he was a cocaine user.
Sec 108 - September 17, 2010
Then Tyson Gillies would be returned to the Mariners.
Kenneth Arthur - September 17, 2010
He can give it back and they'll vacate a winner for the year
tootthekazoo - September 17, 2010
When did this change occur? Just last year?
JonBBT - September 17, 2010
No idea

Saw a post on Twitter noting that of the 28 Cy Young voters, only 7 are under the age of 40.
Joe Metro - September 17, 2010
This sucks, but it doesn't surprise me. Old people always have more say in everything.
Risking moving into politics, but just because it’s fun: The median age of current US Senators is almost 64 years old.
There is 1 senator under the age of 40, and 27 over the age of 70.
If we start offing the old people, maybe Felix has a shot.

The hand poking out is quite creepy.
They may as well just shove a baseball in the gob of a Big Mouth Billy Bass and have it sing Sunshine and Lollipops.
abender20 - September 17, 2010
This would be a good LL secret santa gift.
w00tah - September 17, 2010
I keep looking at it thinking it should be answering a phone.
Yes, creepy. Kind of kooky at the same time, with a bit of spookiness thrown in.

So I wasn't the only one who thought "those bastards bronzed Thing!" when they saw it
OlSalty - September 17, 2010
If I was a LHP and won that award, I'd be pissed

Good point. New rule: righties only. Goodbye C.C., Lee and Price.

I presume you Sullivan'd you way right into a neato double meaning
