Texas Rangers Sign Elvis Andrus

Get bent.

There have been some mightily team-friendly deals signed this winter and the Texas Rangers just added another by buying out all three of Elvis Andrus' arbitration years. I heard about the length of the contract in advance of hearing about the monetary figures, so while I waited for those, I went about constructing what I thought to be a fair value contract and also my guess as to the actual deal about to be leaked.

Based on wide agreement as to Andrus' hitting level and across-the-board praise of his defense, I think three wins (3 WAR) is a fair projection for Andrus going forward and based solely on that and the 40%/60%/80% arbitration guesstimates, pinned a fair market deal for Andrus in the $20-25 million range to buy out all three years. My guess was that the actual figure was going to be nearer $17 million because I knew what the two parties filed for in arbitration ($3.6M from Andrus, $2.65M from the Rangers). I'm not sure why, but first-year arb players constantly seem to be undervalued and that can skew things when being bought out like this.

It appears, based on Ken Rosenthal, that I was still too optimistic and that the contract is going to be for about $15 million, though it will not include any team options, which are usually friendly to the ballclub. This is no Howie Kendrick-level steal for the Rangers, but it's a fine deal for Texas based on Andrus' already established level of play and he showed hints at a relatively improving bat last season.

What the hell Boras?
don't fret

it just covers his arb years. He’ll be a Yankee in 2015

I've got a piece of porcelain he can expire upon.
I miss when the Rangers sucked.
me too

:(

Felix gave the Mariners a hell of a deal as well. So it happens to us too.
Not really. His was pretty fair.

Rationally speaking.

Emotionally speaking of course, FUCK YEAH!

I think the Guti extension is more analogous. That was a great deal at the time.
Not really shocking news

Andrus just feels like a Ranger to me I can’t even imagine him on another team.

I wish they'd put Young back at SS
can you imagine him in a Yankee uniform?
You dont seriously think he's going to be a Yankee?
Could have sworn he was older than 23
I could have sworn he was younger than 23.
Wonder what this means for Jurickson Profar, if anything.

Probably nothing since he’s 18 and in A ball.

There's been talk of moving Profar to 2B if that becomes an issue.

It’s hard to judge because Profar seems to be advanced for his age (both in terms of skills and maturity), suggesting he could move quickly, but he’s just so young.

You could trade him

Jason Vargas is available

Noted.

There’s been some noise that Kinsler would re-sign with the Rangers in a way that is team friendly in years (though I doubt it would be in AAV). If that happens, I expect Profar would be traded, though there’s some who think Kinsler would age into an OF spot without too much pain. I’m…less convinced.

Could just mean he'll be the #1 prospect in baseball in 2013, blocked, and traded for something great. So it's even more bullshit.
I don't know that Profar has the ceiling

to ever be a #1 prospect. He’s had a lot of helium lately, but even then he’s considered to be a guy who’s got above average tools across the board that plays up a bit due to his mental makeup. He’s not considered to be the next Alex Rodriguez or Hanley Ramirez.

When asked to take a guess at the #1 prospect next year, John Sickels said "Profar"

He’s definitely seen that way by some, and you don’t have to be the next Alex Rodriguez at SS to be a #1 prospect. He can become a very good bat, playing great defense at the most elite position and be a #1 prospect.

That's very interesting.

I can see where Sickels is coming from, but it seems more likely to me that somebody like next year’s #1 draft pick or surging breakout candidate passes Profar.

I don't know. A defense first SS wasnt going to win big in arbitration.

Didn’t they just basically avoid the process by giving him what he was going to earn anyways?
By WAR the deal looks great, but the arb process doesn’t seem to take that into consideration.
I guess if he starts winning GGs then maybe he’d have gotten more in arb. Then again his defense is good because of his range not his low error total so I don’t forsee a GG or 2 in his near future.

I don't disagree,

but it should be pointed out that he has been an All Star. I don’t know how that factors into arbitration.

True

Arbitration loves it some arbitrary awards.
